Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 4K visuals into its sleek, 5mm thin, mid 2017 21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display. With a 4096 x 2304 screen resolution, this iMac provides 1 billion colors and 500 nits of brightness, which is 43% brighter than the previous model. The Retina 4K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 4K display provides a larger color space that more equally represents red, green, and blue, as compared to standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail, with more balance and precision.

The iMac's processor has been upgraded and now houses a 7th-gen Kaby Lake 3.0 GHz Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor that can be overclocked up to 3.5 GHz, as well as 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM. Visuals are powered by a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 555 graphics card with 2GB of vRAM, and for storage, there is a 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n for speedy hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.2, as well as a UHS-II SDXC card slot, two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and a FaceTime HD camera. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

Apple's 21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display (Mid 2017) operates using 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz and includes an Apple Magic Keyboard, an Apple Magic Mouse 2, a Lightning to USB cable, and a power cord. The installed operating system is macOS High Sierra, and protection is provided by a limited 1-year warranty, which can be extended using AppleCare.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

General Features

21.5" Retina 4K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 4096 x 2304 screen resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll be able to playback 4K content natively. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the display without having to crowd around it. With a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 555 graphics card and 2GB of vRAM, the iMac delivers 4K visual effects and 3D graphics, as well as video editing capabilities that can tackle multicam projects in Final Cut Pro X with up to five streams of full-res 4K video, as well as the ability to edit 360° video and create 3D VR content.
7th-Gen Kaby Lake Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a 7th-Gen Kaby Lake Intel Core i5 Quad-Core processor that can reach a stock speed of 3.0 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 3.5 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 7th-gen Kaby Lake Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance needed to run processor-intensive applications such as Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. Combined with 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 onboard RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
External Displays
The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and either one 5120 x 2880 (5K) external display at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, two 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or two 4096 x 2304 (4K) external displays at 60 Hz with support for millions of colors.
Thin Design
The iMac maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40% less volume than the 2011 iMac. Its display panel is 1.4mm thin.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.2
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, you're instantly connected to all your favorite content. Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Gigabit Ethernet
For a more reliable network connection, take advantage of wired Gigabit Ethernet technology.
Thunderbolt 3
Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports come standard on all iMac models, each delivering up data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s external drives and cameras, plus twice the bandwidth for video and display connectivity. Thunderbolt 3 also supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 and DisplayPort 1.2. Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA output is also supported using adapters (sold separately).
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.
FaceTime HD Camera
A built-in FaceTime HD camera allows users to use apps such as FaceTime and Skype for video calls.

    Apple iMac reviews

21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display (Mid 2017) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Desktop! This is the fourth IMac I've owned and used professionally since the early 2000's. I've kept using Apple desktops for their trouble free service, and easy interface. I've always liked the way they handle tasks, have such a small sized footprint. This latest model works great for my photography, email, and internet needs, and I really like the new 4K screen, and color quality! Also enjoying the new wireless rechargeable mouse, and keyboard. After four models, this is certainly the best version yet! B&H offered the lowest price along with free shipping, so ordering it from them was an easy decision. Good product, and good dealer. Thank you!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Usual B&H service..... but RAM upgrade warning Got great B&H service as usual.  Unfortunately I thought I did my homework and assumed I could upgrade RAM on my own. But user replaceable RAM is for the larger 27 iMac not the 21.5. The standard 8gb RAM is barely usable. Just a heads up. Now Ill have to fork over $$$ to get the upgrade done at a Apple store.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great company. Weak iMac This review doesn't concern B & H. Their service was great. It's the iMac that is not what I thought it would be. The biggest bottleneck to this machine is the hard drive. It is unbelievably slow. I ran benchmarks and Read/Write speeds were at 40Mbps. Boot up times were agonizingly slow. Loading just the Finder presented the pinwheel. And popping up the screen from being in sleep mode was at minimum 7-10 seconds every time. I fixed this problem by hooking up my old SSD via thunderbolt port. R/W went up to 430Mbps. Boot times were much quicker and app load up times were faster with no pinwheels. Waking from sleep mode is about 1/2 a second. I get it. SSDs are faster. But why Apple would put a 4-banger into a Porsche is beyond me. It's completely absurd. This iMac has plenty of ponies under the hood. I wouldn't recommend this iMac to anyone. Make the jump to an SSD or at minimum the Fusion drive if you decide on an iMac. I've not tested the Fusion drive but I bet it's better than a regular HDD. I gave this iMac a rating of 3 stars only because I like B & H. If it wasn't for them I'd give this iMac one star.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My First iMac - 5 Stars After having an iPhone, an iPad, and even an Apple Watch, I finally invested in the purchase of an iMac. The learning curve from PC to iMac has been pretty easy especially when already familiar with Apple products. The 4K display is brilliant, but what I really love is the integration between the iMac and my other Apple products. The ability to AirDrop files and photos and sync folders in iCloud has saved me a lot of time. This is such a well built unit and I envision it serving me well for many years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine! Was using a ten year old Apple desktop one of the kids left behind. The Retina display is awesome. This computer does all that my husband and I need it to do. Love the wireless keyboard and mouse. Was a breeze for us older folks to set up and use. Didn't get all the upgrades the kids always had to have. Got a great Black Friday deal at B&H and also bought myself a new MacBook Air. Our experience with Apple products over the past 30+ years has been great, so we expect the same from these two machines. If you're on the fringe, don't hesitate. Buy one - you'll love it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Apple goes backwards I assumed this would be a faster computer than the '09 model it replaced. I mean, its 8 years newer. It was like molasses right out of the box. Took a whopping 1:22 minutes to boot to the login screen. . another 20 seconds to boot to the desktop. More than twice the time of the '09. A little research later. . the '09 has a 7,200 RPM HD, this one a 5,400 HD. The '09 has 16GB Ram, this one 8GB. Could this be the culprit? So I immediately upgraded this '17. It now has a 500 MB SSD instead of Macs dinosaur HD, and 16GB of Ram. New boot time - 20 sec to login, and 2 secs to desktop. If you want to improve on an old iMac - DO NOT BUY THIS. Do yourself a favor and get one with an SSD, and at minimum - 16GB of Ram. Unless of course, you don't mind brewing pot of coffee while this one gets ready to run. . . And contrary to much opinion - these iMacs ARE upgradeable, just not for novices. If you don't know what you're doing - have it done by someone who does.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So many issues I started using my 6 year old iMac I've encountered so many issues I started using my 6 year old iMac again. Photos often won't open on the desktop. Photo program won't quit and... then the computer will not shut down and I have to unplug it. copy and paste doesn't work. Too many issues to list. Think I got a lemon. Very disappointed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Size for 4K I use this fast new iMac as a music server, and also as an in-house fast computer with large screen instead of using my macbook pro laptop. I say in-house as I also have an office on my property with my main Mac Pro computers for my graphic business. I would have gotten one the 2015 iMacs but I wanted one with a separate video card instead of using the available RAM as the graphic processor. The new 2017 iMacs fit the bill. Great product and of course looks great.
