Litepanels Soft overview

  • 1Description

With its chassis-integrated diffusion, the Litepanels Astra Soft Bi-Color is like having a softbox built into the slim Litepanels Astra profile. The diffusion is designed to all but eliminate the multi-source shadow effect and lend a soft wrap-around aesthetic to your subject while covering a larger, less concentrated area of illumination.

Like the rest of the Astra series, the Soft Bi-Color is designed for professional production, with 25% higher output than the previous version and high color fidelity in its full 3200K to 5600K temperature range. Adjustments of color and brightness are stepless all the way through, and the output is flicker-free at all settings. A quiet fan at the rear cools the electronics, and it can be turned off during critical scenes, although the light output will be less while the fan is inactive.

The Astra is ready for worldwide use thanks to its 100-240 VAC power supply, but it can also run on batteries when AC power is unavailable.

    Litepanels Soft reviews

Astra Soft Bi-Color is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should have purchased 2! No idea why B&H ran a deal zone on this light, but I quickly purchased one at the sale price of $949. I'm primarily a still photographer, but have been doing more videos. I had purchased some inexpensive (Dracast) LED lights from B&H but was not happy with the harsh lighting effects of using without a modifier (soft box). I had read other reviews of the Astra soft and all rated this unit very well, almost on par with the Kinoflow Celeb at nearly half the price. At the deal zone price, it was a no-brainer to pick one up. The built-in diffuser is terrific, and you really don't need to add an external soft box. The light output is lower than the 6x Astra, but I'm only using this indoors, not for outdoor fill, where the 6X Astra is better to balance with sunlight. Still don't know why B&H put these on sale, you won't find these discounted anywhere. It's worth the retail price as it's about the same a the Astra 6x + soft box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Astra Close-Up As I set about building a small lighting kit for video, I hadn't initially considered the soft version of the Astra. However, once I saw how beautiful the quality of the output is (as compared to a standard Litepanel), and that it still does output a great deal of light, I decided to give it a try-- and I'm glad I did. While a standard Astra is more versatile and powerful, the Astra Soft takes less prep to actually use for many purposes. Though I'd still put a softbox on it for shooting an interview (and still be able to hit f5.6 at ISO 800 from 2-3 feet away), you could get away with it as is and get a nice single-shadow light with a bit of wrap. Or you could even hand hold it for quick beautiful fill for a close-up. The output is lower-- but that's mitigated by the fact that you can use it nearer without modification.Maybe they should have called this the "Astra Close-Up." :-) Rather than comparing to the standard Astra, I'd instead compare it to the remote phosphor units made by Cineo or BBS-- except with easily tunable color. Or to the new generation Kino Flo LEDs, which are pricier and larger (though with even softer output because of that, of course). In short, if you're looking for a light to mostly use close to your subject (as a soft key or fill), and quick set-up or traveling light is valuable for you, take a serious look. And if you already have high output hard lights, maybe the special qualities of this light help it fill a niche in your kit that a standard panel doesn't.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great soft light The light quality out of this is very nice. Great to have a quick, reasonably bright, soft light, battery powered light in the kit. I'd recommend running this off 150wh or bigger batteries. Build quality is pretty good but not as good as my Lupo super panel
