Apple iMac overview

  • 1Description

Apple weds high-res 5K visuals into its sleek, 5mm thin, mid 2017 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display. With a 5120 x 2880 screen resolution, this iMac provides 1 billion colors and 500 nits of brightness, which is 43% brighter than the previous model. The Retina 5K display also features a wider color gamut. Using a P3-based color gamut, the Retina 5K display provides a larger color space that more equally represents red, green, and blue, as compared to standard sRGB displays. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail, with more balance and precision.

The iMac's processor has been upgraded and now houses a 7th-gen Kaby Lake 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7 Quad-Core processor that can be overclocked up to 4.5 GHz, as well as 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM. Visuals are powered by a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card with 8GB of vRAM, and for storage, there is a 1TB SSD.

Outfitted with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n for speedy hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 4.2, as well as a UHS-II SDXC card slot, two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and a FaceTime HD camera. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

Apple's 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2017) operates using 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz and includes an Apple Magic Keyboard, an Apple Magic Mouse 2, a Lightning to USB cable, and a power cord. The installed operating system is macOS High Sierra, and protection is provided by a limited 1-year warranty, which can be extended using AppleCare.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

General Features

27" Retina 5K IPS Display
Whether your iMac is in your studio, living room, or kitchen, the display is the focal point. With a 5120 x 2880 screen resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, you'll be able to playback 5K content natively. The IPS panel allows for wider viewing angles so more people can enjoy the display without having to crowd around it. With a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card and 8GB of vRAM, the iMac delivers visual effects and 3D graphics, as well as video editing capabilities that can tackle multicam projects in Final Cut Pro X with up to five streams of full-res 4K video, as well as the ability to edit 360° video and create 3D VR content.
7th-Gen Kaby Lake Quad-Core Intel Core Performance
The iMac houses a 7th-Gen Kaby Lake Intel Core i7 Quad-Core processor that can reach a stock speed of 4.2 GHz. It can also be overclocked up to 4.5 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. The 7th-gen Kaby Lake Intel processor uses low voltage for better energy efficiency while still providing fast performance needed to run processor-intensive applications such as Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. Combined with 8GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM, the iMac allows you to multitask quickly and efficiently.
External Displays
The iMac simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and either one 5120 x 2880 (5K) external display at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, two 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60 Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or two 4096 x 2304 (4K) external displays at 60 Hz with support for millions of colors.
Thin Design
The iMac maintains its 5mm profile, which is up to 40% less volume than the 2011 iMac. Its display panel is 1.4mm thin.
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.2
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, you're instantly connected to all your favorite content. Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology is also built in, so you can connect accessories such as a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Gigabit Ethernet
For a more reliable network connection, take advantage of wired Gigabit Ethernet technology.
Thunderbolt 3
Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports come standard on all iMac models, each delivering up data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s external drives and cameras, plus twice the bandwidth for video and display connectivity. Thunderbolt 3 also supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 and DisplayPort 1.2. Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA output is also supported using adapters (sold separately).
USB 3.0
With USB 3.0, you can transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every iMac comes with four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports - with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 - and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod or digital camera.
Up to 64GB RAM
While the current 8GB memory configuration is made up of two 4GB modules, the memory can be upgraded to a maximum of 64GB, using a 16GB chip in each of the four 260-pin SO-DIMM sockets.
FaceTime HD Camera
A built-in FaceTime HD camera allows users to use apps such as FaceTime and Skype for video calls.

    Apple iMac reviews

27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2017) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Video editing dream machine! I purchased the June 2017 5K 27 iMac to replace my 2012 15 MacBook Pro for video editing. The MacBook was passed down to a family member which gave me the opportunity to go back to a desktop. I ordered it with the 4.2GHZ processor, 1 TB SSD and 8GB of RAM then added another 32GB myself saving $300. I use it primarily to edit video using Final Cut Pro X including 4K footage from my Lumix GH5. This is a Dream Machine for editing. I no longer have time to grab a coffee before it's done transcoding a video. I use a 6 core Mac Pro with dual graphics cards at work and this new iMac smokes it. On top of that, the 5K display is a big plus for my tired eyes. I considered another MacBook Pro but after adding up the purchase cost, external display & dongles and having a less powerful machine, I am very satisfied with my iMac purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best iMAC so far I received the 2017 iMac 5k + the Apple Care, about a week ago and I love it. Bought the 4.2 GHZ with the 1TB SSD. Decided to buy my own memory rather then have it preinstalled saved like almost $900. I thought of buying it from Apple but they charge Tax, so B&H was the best option. I called them and they set up with no problem. I have been buying from B&H for long time and I think they are the best, so efficient everything went smooth. Thanks B&H customer for life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Computer for a Photographer I waited a year to replace my 8 year old Macbook Pro. I focus stack dozens of large file (44MP) photos, so I needed a powerful computer with plenty of RAM and an updated video card. I chose the 4.2 GHZ iMac with 8GB of RAM (upgraded to 32GB) and 1TB SSD. All together it makes every process I do so much faster than before. The 27 5K display now shows me when an image is tack sharp. I use the 2:1 and 4:1 image magnifiers now to check focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful monitor and great speed I was drawn to the iMac by the beautiful image provided by its 5k monitor. It is a replacement for a pc purchased in 2007. The iMac provides a startling increase in the speed at which it conducts business. I am impressed with how quickly it loads Lightroom CC, which was frustratingly slow on the old pc. I must now face up to the task of transferring my photos and the LR catalog to the iMac. My only complaint is having the on-off switch and fittings for USB, Thunderbolt, and ethernet connection on the backside of the unit. This may make for more pleasing lines on the front of the unit, but promises to be a pain for actual use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would definitely purchase again! I use this for large image editing/ finishing and video/music work. Replaced an older Mac Pro 3Ghz with it and it is amazingly faster. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best desktop I've ever seen i7 processor with 40GB memory and 1TB SSD...system is amazingly fast and incredibly stable running Mac OS, VM Ware Fusion and Windows 10 all simultaneously. The bright retina display is by far the best display I've used and I've been using computers since the first PCs in 1982. I would recommend this system to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast for Lightroom photo editing. Upgraded from 2009 3.1Ghz i7 PC w/1066Mhz 12GB memory and SSD to 27" iMac with 4.2Ghz i7 w/2400Mhz memory and 1TB SSD. Upgraded iMac memory to 64GB (more than needed). Lightroom preview build and display of 75MB raw picture file went from about 10 seconds on the PC to less than a second on the iMac SSD and about 1 second on its external USB3 G-Drive. 5GB file copies went from 57MB/s on the PC SSD to instantaneous on iMac SSD. Black Magic reports 2124 write / 2628 read MB/s for the internal SSD and 206/207 for the external USB3 G-Drive. External Sandisk SSD connected via Thunderbolt3 yielded 553/865 from Black Magic. Scrolling through and editing large raw photo files are similar performance to editing small jpg files on the older PC SSD. See photo for Black Magic speed test of iMac internal SSD. Brings back the joy of photo editing large batches of large raw files to create the desired look for each.
