Apple MacBook Pro Overview

  • 1Description
Found in: Work Laptops

The space gray mid 2017 Apple 13.3" MacBook Pro is faster and more powerful, yet thin at 0.59" and lightweight at just 3 lb. This system is powered by a 7th Gen Kaby Lake 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 dual-core processor that features a burst speed of up to 4.0 GHz, while 8GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM helps to ensure smooth multitasking and also allows the computer to quickly access frequently-used files and programs.

The 13.3" IPS Retina display features a WQXGA 2560 x 1600 screen resolution with a 227 ppi pixel density. It has LED backlighting with a maximum brightness of 500 nits, and it includes support for the P3 wide color gamut. Integrated Intel Iris Graphics 640 delivers a sharp, clear picture, and you'll also be able to output video to an external display using the system's Thunderbolt 3 ports, which feature native DisplayPort output. One Thunderbolt 3 port can support one multi-panel 5K display at resolutions up to 5120 x 2880 at 60 Hz, or dual 4K displays at resolutions up to 4096 x 2304 at 60 Hz, each of which are able to support over a billion colors.

For long-term storage of your files, this MacBook Pro is equipped with a 1TB PCIe SSD, with sequential read speeds up to 3.1 GB/s and sequential write speeds up to 2.1 GB/s. If you want to add external peripherals, dual Thunderbolt 3 ports support bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, while also supporting 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 and device charging. 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi is built-in for wireless networking, and Bluetooth 4.2 technology will also allow you to connect additional compatible peripherals. Other integrated features include a 720p webcam, dual microphones, stereo speakers, a 78-key backlit keyboard with 12 function keys and four arrow keys, an ambient light sensor, and a larger Force Touch trackpad.

The 13.3" MacBook Pro includes a 61W USB Type-C power adapter that operates using 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz, a 6.6' USB Type-C charging cable, and a built-in 54.5Wh lithium-ion polymer battery that lasts for up to 10 hours before recharging is required - or up to 30 days of standby time.

This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple's website for upgrade eligibility.

General Features

Flash Storage
The embedded 1TB PCIe SSD provides sequential read speeds up to 3.2 GB/s and sequential write speeds up to 2.2 GB/s.
Battery
Up to 10 hours of battery life is available for tasks such as iTunes movie playback and web surfing.
Retina Display
The display in the MacBook Pro features 500 nits and an increased contrast ratio, delivering deeper blacks and brighter whites. Its larger pixel aperture and variable refresh rate make it more power efficient than previous generations. It also supports the P3 wide color gamut, which features 25% more colors than the commonly used sRGB gamut, for even more vibrant greens and reds. This helps ensure truer-to-life pictures with realistically vivid details, essential for graphic design, color grading, and editing.
Keyboard and Trackpad
Interacting with the MacBook Pro is a better experience all around. The keyboard has been redesigned to include a second-generation butterfly mechanism, which has been refined for greater comfort and responsiveness. The Force Touch trackpad is also much larger, giving your fingers more room to gesture and click.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously or one multi-panel 5K display. The MacBook Pro has two ports, sharing one dedicated bus.

    Apple MacBook Pro Reviews

13.3" MacBook Pro (Mid 2017, Space Gray) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 326.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product but something is missing I love this computer is extremely portable, but the lack of ports and the new battery are disappointing. Apple should have left at least one usb a 3.0. Dongles is something i'm not getting used to. Also the dongles available in the market as of now are very unreliable. I've been looking for the perfect one but no success, all of them have bad reviews, they get extremely hot, they suck your battery power faster, etc. Also an sdcard slot would have been nice to have since i purchased the 128gb version. Pay the extra money and get at least 256gb version. Battery is weaker than previous models, with early 2015 version i was able to get trough the day but now at 3 pm i have to plug it back in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful machine Bought this machine as a gift to replace an old MacBook Air. The new MacBook Pro 13 is as light and slightly more compact than the old Air. The picture quality of the screen is noticeably superior, and the large touch pad and new key board (2017 model) make the interaction feel smooth and unconstricted despite the overall small size of the machine. We went with the i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SS drive configuration and so far the computer has blazed through any task it was confronted with - given the price point, we hope it will continue to do so in years to come...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Keyboard design flaw causes early often failure I've used all MacBook Pros variants since 2009. Never had a problem with their keyboards. Wanted to love it, but the keyboard extremely shallow design, and tight tolerances cause the keys to eventually either lose their "click" i.e. become spongy, or simply don't respond at all.? As a professional software developer, I live and die by a good keyboard. I either have to carry an external keyboard, or look for other options. For non-professional use, occasional emails, web browsing it's a fine machine, but there's nothing pro about this Mac.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mac Review I have had a long history with macs and it was time to update mine. I decided to get the 2017 Macbook with 16Gb Memory and 512Mb Had-Drive. It was less than the new 2018's and I did not need a touchbar so this was the right choice. The keyboard is not quiet as noted in other reviews but I have not had a problem. The machine is quick and snappy and runs reasonably well. The screen is bright and gorgeous. I did not know if I would like Space Gray but its sharp and better than silver. B&H saved me $200 over the Apple Site without Taxes so what isnt to like? Over all I am pleased with the product and the service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MacBook Pro from B&H - A great product and a great deal My family all use Macbook Pros. They are great machines that integrate perfectly with our mobile devices. It was time for me to get a new MBP, which I use to manage my digital life including CAD design and photography. This new machine is awesome, which is exactly what I expected. It didn't disappoint - it just works! I searched for the lowest price and B&H was it! With free shipping and no tax (for my state), it was by far the best price. My employer even offers discounted Apple products but that price still didn't match B&H. I will definitely be back to B&H when the time comes for my next mac!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great computer great customer service I recently bought a MacBook Pro that was overheating while performing simple tasks. The unit was less than 2 weeks old and I quickly contacted customer service. They responded the next day and were able to send a replacement even before I sent in the defective unit. They were very responsive and were able to solve the problem extremely quickly. I was skeptical buying such an expensive product since I live on the West coast and was concerned about the possibility of needing to return the product but in this case it was handled perfectly. ?I would definitely recommend B & H to family and friends. Great customer service and great prices.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid upgrade from older MacBook I use this product for design and web development. Other than Apple's unwarranted price gouge, this is a nice machine. You can find a Windows machine for less with a larger SSD and the ports that everyone wanted to remain. Depending on what OS you want to run the 2017 MBP may be the one for you. I upgraded to 256 SSD and purchased a hub to use USB3, HDMI, and SD cards. The pro model should have kept these ports in my opinion like the Dell XPS.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Finished with Apple laptops I have been a long time user of Apple laptops. I recently left a 2012 MB Pro to buy this 2017 version. It has been incredibly disappointing. I'm writing this review on a Lenovo. Apple has removed all worthwhile ports, pushing us all to the TB/USB C port. absurd. I tried to edit a photo shoot the other night on my couch, using the MB Pro rather than the desktop iMac. I had to get a powered adapter to load my SD card. Absurd! The unit uses a huge power brick that has the useless Apple adapter on it, which often does not register that it is plugged in, when it is plugged in. Apple has failed to deliver a useful product. I am leaving it behind after over a decade of faithful useage. Don't consider this. Buy a Windows machine and let Apple know that you are waiting for them to bring out machines that customers want, rather than ones that Apple feels are what we need.
