Apple MacBook Pro overview

  • 1Description

Experience the innovative interface of the Touch Bar in the mid 2017 silver Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

The Touch Bar places controls right at your fingertips and adapts to different apps to provide useful functions without having to navigate complex menus or memorize keyboard shortcuts. Replacing the function keys in the top row of the keyboard, the Touch Bar features a Retina-quality display and supports multi-touch input.

The power button has been upgraded with a Touch ID sensor, so you can quickly log into your MacBook Pro using your fingerprint. You can also use Touch ID to make purchases over the web, thanks to Apple Pay. Touch ID enables a quick, accurate reading of your fingerprint and uses sophisticated algorithms to recognize and match it with the Secure Enclave in the Apple T1 chip.

The system features a 7th Gen Kaby Lake 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 16GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, a 1TB PCIe-based SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, a Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with a 2nd-gen butterfly mechanism, stereo speakers with double the dynamic range of its predecessor as well as improved bass, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS High Sierra is the installed operating system.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

Touch Bar
The Touch Bar replaces the function keys that have long occupied the top of your keyboard with something much more versatile and capable. The multi-touch, Retina-quality display changes automatically based on what you're doing, from showing traditional system controls, such as volume and brightness, to more directly interacting with or browsing through content. Intelligent typing features like emoji and predictive text improve the typing experience, and you'll be able to customize the Touch Bar to fit your needs. The Touch Bar can also adapt to apps, such as Mail, Safari, Messages, and even third-party apps like Adobe Photoshop, so you'll have access to useful functions previously hidden in menus.
Touch ID
A Touch ID sensor has been integrated into the power button, so you can quickly log into your account, even when another user is logged in. You can also use it with Apple Pay to securely purchase things over the web, thanks to macOS Sierra.
Retina Display
The 15.4" Retina Display has a 2880 x 1800 resolution and features brighter LED backlighting than its predecessor as well as an increased contrast ratio, delivering deeper blacks and brighter whites. Its larger pixel aperture and variable refresh rate make it more power efficient than previous generations. It also supports the P3 color gamut, which allows for more vibrant colors. This ensures true-to-life pictures with realistically vivid details, which are essential for graphic design, color grading, and editing.
Force Touch Trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad on the 15.4" MacBook Pro takes all the capabilities of multi-touch and adds force sensors that detect subtle differences in the amount of downward pressure you apply. This lets you have a deeper connection to your content, bringing more functionality right to your fingertip. It also introduces haptic feedback to MacBook Pro — allowing you not just to see what's happening on the screen, but to feel it. With multi-touch, you can use realistic gestures like swiping or pinching to switch between apps, navigate your content, and get the most out of your desktop space.
Thinner & Lighter
The 15.4" MacBook Pro features a redesigned enclosure design and all-metal unibody construction that creates a rigid and dense notebook that is also thin and light. At just 15.5 mm thin, the 15.4" MacBook Pro weighs just four pounds.
The speakers have been totally redesigned to provide as much as twice the dynamic range and up to 58 percent more volume, with two-and-a-half-times louder bass for maximum boom. Plus, they're connected directly to system power, enabling up to three times more peak power.
macOS Sierra
The 15.4" MacBook Pro runs macOS Sierra, which features Siri integration, Universal Clipboard, Apple Pay on the web, and memories in Photos.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously or one multi-panel 5K display. The Macbook Pro has four ports, with each pair using a dedicated bus.

    Apple MacBook Pro reviews

15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (Mid 2017, Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just short of being great I purchased a 15 mid-2017 MacBook Pro (2.9GHz, Radeon Pro 460 4GB graphics card) to replace a mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina, which remains perfectly fine for everyday use but was having performance problems with 3D rendering (Blender) and some demanding uses of Photoshop. Overall, the machine is excellent, but the performance boost wasn't as great as I was expecting ( rendering is about 1/3 the time of the earlier MacBook, but that's not so much after five years). Like everyone else, I would have preferred 32GB memory for demanding applications, but I didn't feel that I had the luxury of waiting another year. It's marginally thinner than the previous version, but the difference isn't worth the tradeoffs they've made to achieve that thinness. They short-throw butterfly keyboard is less pleasant to use. Moreover, it's extremely noisy, with a hollow percussive sound. Very undesirable for those who work in libraries. I actually like the fact that all four ports are the same and appreciate the simplicity of the USB-C system. I don't find the use of outboard adaptors a problem (basically I have one adaptor, which is an Anker Ethernet + 3 USB-A). I do not like the fact that the AC adaptor does not come with a power cord, only with the direct plug module, but the cords from my earlier adaptors work. I do wish Apple would come up with a Magsafe - USB-C adaptor so that I can use those earlier power supplies. The Touch Bar is of limited utility. If you know your keyboard shortcuts, it is not much of an improvement over the standard row of hard keys. I do use the Siri button and the fingerprint recognition is convenient. Battery life is better than the previous, but being so applications dependent, it's hard to make any firm evaluation. It's a very competent, nearly great machine, but Apple's intense drive to elegant industrial design often causes them to make compromises.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Mobile CAD work station and all around work laptop What's not to love? Super fast, super thin and light weight, super quiet, lovely screen and amazing speakers, massive trackpad. USB-C ports can do everything you need with the help of some adapters for legacy hardware. Touch Bar way more useful that standard function keys. Blazing fast with Vectorworks and File Maker Pro and love my Adobe CC apps and final cut X! A lot easier to lug around than my trashcan.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Apple has lost its touch with users Touch Bar: useless as far as I'm concerned, not to mention that the Esc key was replaced with a virtual key, makes no sense to me. Trackpad: it is way to sensitive, the slightest touch will trigger a click event. Often times I find that I trigger the select/click functions just by scrolling up/down on the page. Also, the size of trackpad is double of previous model which makes it more prone to be triggered with your palms while typing. All other features of the TP are not really of any value for my needs. Keyboard: it's different from the previous version. I like the old model feel but the new one is not bad either. Ports: this one is big a disappointment, the lack of USB-A ports makes the new model reliant on hubs and adapters which is a big negative for me. One must buy a bunch of new accessories which makes this laptop less portable, a big negative. I don't want to travel with a bunch of adapters to meetings and presentations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised B&H was extremely quick and efficient in dispatching my order; the price, unsurpassed. My new MBP-15 of 2017 was delivered within the established timeframe. It was the first time I bought at this store and I am pleasantly surprised. I would gladly buy again at B&H. I was impressed with the speed of my new MBP-15. I was used to the speed of my MBP-17 inches Late 2011 (2.5GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB, 750GB), so the jump to the new Kaby Lake processor of 2.9 GHz and the SSD memory (1TB) was sensational. I was keeping my MBP-17 in the hope that Apple would build them again (in fact, I have another MBP-17 from 2009 that is still working). However, in October I had sporadic problems with its video card (unfortunately outside the extended warranty provided by Apple for those cases), so I finally decided to change it for the MBP-15 of 2017. I thought I would not get used to a smaller screen, so I was surprised how easy it was. The Retina Display is spectacular. I do not miss, at all, the 17-inch screen of my previous MBP. The Touch Bar is easily customizable and after having used it all November, I do not think I can return to the function keys bar of the older machines. I hope that more and more developers take advantage of the Touch Bar and implement its use in their applications. The new keyboard of the MBP-15 is also magnificent; It was not hard getting used to. When I work in my MBP I listen to my music without using the built-in speakers, but through external Bose’ speakers connected with Airplay or Bluetooth. My surprise was great when, by mistake, I heard music through the speakers of my MBP-15; simply stunning for such a thin machine. The quality of Apple is indisputable and I am extremely satisfied with my new MBP-15, as well as with the B&H sales service. Totally recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fastest Macbook so Far, the lack of ports is liveable I was dying with my old 8gb retina macbook, every render was a torture. I was lacking sleep, eating badly, and hopeless looking at the rainbow wheel every two seconds. I decided to upgrade my computer to the current and most powerful new machine from Apple. I love everything about it, its sleek design, the beautiful screen that shines like a diamond, the travel of the new keyboard, which is better than the 2016 models. I like it really much. Everything about this computer is FAST, NOW i enjoy the render process. Watching my computer being so much fast than my older one is perfect for the feeling of being more productive, deserving better, achieving more... which im gonna kinda have to cause I spent almost 4000 thousands on the computer, so i HAVE to pay it... You better work b****

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 2017 macbook pro Haven't had it long enough to try out all of the features, but one thing I didn't pay attention to was the fact you need a dongle or someway to continue to use your USB or other external drives etc. The last MacBook I had had USB, and the other drives. but very sleek, fast, etc

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost a year now and I still love it....... So far so good. I'm almost 10 months in and I've had no major issues. Seeing that I also have the previous generation, I didn't have to upgrade but I couldn't resist. Plenty of power and plenty of RAM. I'll keep you posted of any changes.
