Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Assembled for solar photography, this Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 Lens Solar Eclipse Kit from B&H bundles the versatile Canon EF-mount telephoto zoom with a 95mm solar eclipse filter.

  • Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Canon EF

Spanning a versatile and long-reaching focal length range, the Canon EF-mount SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 from Tamron is a 4x zoom covering telephoto to super telephoto perspectives. Complementing the long reach is an optimized optical design that features three low dispersion (LD) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range. eBAND and BBAR coatings have also been applied to reduce ghosting and flare when working in strong, backlit lighting conditions.

Beyond its optical attributes, the G2 version of this lens also incorporates a FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism to permit locking the zoom position at any focal length position to prevent accidental zoom extension. Conventional zoom lock is also featured to prevent barrel extension during transport. Suiting handheld shooting situations, Vibration Compensation (VC) is a 4.5-stop-effective image stabilization mechanism that helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper results when working with slower shutter speeds. A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers notably quick and accurate focusing performance to suit working with fast-moving subjects, and full-time manual focus is also supported for fine-tuned control. Benefitting its use outdoors, the lens also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to guard against dirt, dust, moisture, and smudging from affecting image quality. The ergonomic and durable metal construction of the lens also incorporates textured focus and zoom rings, and a removable, rotating tripod collar with an Arca-type compatible foot is supplied to better enable shooting from tripods and monopods.

Spanning a versatile, long-reaching range, this tele to super-tele zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 240-960mm equivalent focal length range.
Three low dispersion elements are incorporated to nearly eliminate both axial and transverse chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.
A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control.
A FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism enables you to lock the zoom at any position in order to prevent unwanted zoom extension during use. A conventional zoom lock switch is also featured, which locks the zoom in place at the 150mm position to prevent zoom extension during transportation.
A sealed, moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.
A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

  • Tamron Marumi 95mm DHG ND-100000 Solid Neutral Density 5.0 Solar Eclipse Filter (16.5 Stops)

Constructed from optical glass for clarity and accurate color fidelity with an aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability, the Marumi 95mm DHG Solid Neutral Density 5.0 Solar Eclipse Filter from Tamron has a 92,000x filter factor that provides a 16.5 stop exposure reduction. Its 5.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image that is effective for solar eclipse photography. This filter is meant for photographic purposes only, and should not be used for direct solar viewing or with optical viewfinders; use electronic viewfinders or live-view only.

The filter can be used to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required, allowing you to control the depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface has nine multiple layers of anti-reflection Digital High Grade (DHG) coating, which also offers greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean longer than with un-coated filters.

Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 reviews

SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Canon EF is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 78.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing lens at an amazing price! this lens is just amazing.I had the previous version and you can notice the difference in every aspect. it's noticeably faster, has a more precise focusing, it has better weatherproofing, better optics which you can tell in the quality of the pictures it makes, VC is incredible and with the different modes it has you can adapt its behavior according to what type of photography you're doing. and a very nice addition: the lock ring enables you to lock the lens in any focal length. the original one was an excellent lens but this one is on par with much more expensive lenses out there. best bang for your buck not just in it's category but on every category. period!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens and much improved over the first version. I am an avid hobbyist, had this lens for about a month and just returned from a trip with over 2000 shots taken with this lens. I owned the previous version of the lens and this is much improved. My first version of this lens was sent back for firmware upgrades to correct tracking issues and it did improve. Still this new version far exceeds the old one. I used the new mode 2 IS for tracking birds and had a very high success rate. Still images are very sharp and I like the overall build quality. Love the built-in arca swiss foot. The only minor issue I had was that the zoom is a little stiff. I have small hands which tired easily from working the zoom. Maybe the stiffness with be less over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really happy with this lens so far! I've had this lens now for about 2 weeks and I primarily photograph birds. I use a Canon 5Dmk3 and I had used the 1st gen Tamron 150-600 a while back and wasn't that impressed, so I had my reservations with the 2nd gen. So far, i'm quite impressed by what I'm seeing. The VC is fantastic. I've been able to get a lot of very good, sharp images shooting as slow as 1/200th, handheld, with VC on. Attached images are some prime examples of that. I feel like the color is a bit cold compared to the canon lenses I've been using (300mm f/4L and 400mm f/5.6L) but that's easily fixed in post. Overall, this lens was a great upgrade for me and only time will tell how well it holds up from a mechanical standpoint. I hope it does well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Every Penny I looked at a lot of different lenses before I purchased the Tamron, including Canon. I decided for the price and the focus range it was probably my best option. Mainly plan to use it for photographing the marching band and summer water sports. Used it Memorial Day weekend to shoot my sons marching band and it performed fantastic. Images were sharp and focus seemed to be pretty quick. The long focus does take a second to extend all the way, or back. So be ready for what you want to capture. Other than being heavy, but what do you expect, this is a fantastic lens that I would recommend to professional and enthusiasts alike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bang for the Buck. I couldn't be happier. This is a fine lens and hand held shots come out sharp even at 600 mm magnification. Low light is the only enemy without a tripod. I wanted to cry, when the lens fell from the back of my SUV, while I was looking for other equipment. I had set the lens on my sleeping bag, while I searched, and it fell over three feet to the asphalt. Despite the fall, and slight damage, the lens continues to perform like a champ. This lens is worth much more than the price I paid. The pictures are cropped so they can be added to this review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good lens I haven't used it a lot yet so take that into account on my review. I have never owned a lens this size so I was really surprised when I opened the box. The lens is long and wide. It isn't as heavy as I though it would be for as big as it is. It is hard to hand hold at 600 mm but at a 1/1000 outside in daylight I did pretty well. For me, this lens will almost always need to be on my monopod or tripod. IQ is as reported. AF is very quick and accurate; very little searching so far. Color is very good. Build quality is substantial, very good feel to the touch, and very smooth movement. The zoom lock is great. For somebody who doesn't need 600 mm all the time this is a great lens to beat the cost of the long primes and Canikon .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big step I owned the previous version for almost 3 years , was doing good but it had it's flaws so I decided to give this version a chance...it's a huge difference between the 2 versions, the focusing on G2 is fast , the sharpness at 600mm is better than the version 1, the VR is much better. The photo I attached is taken with the new lens on a Canon 5d mark III, it's raw image, 100%crop of the image, no edit at all, @600mm, f8, 1/500s, hand held...It's a keeper

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big step up from my Canon 100-400mm lens. My 7 year old Canon 100-400mm lens broke down and the cost of repair would have been slightly less than trying the new Tamron 150-600 G2. I shot wild life mainly with the big lines and a 7D MII so the extra reach is one of the options I was looking for in a new lens. It has preformed as good as my old Canon with no falloff in the quality of images I am getting. It is heavier and I am still learning how to follow subjects that are moving when hand holding, but must say very happy with this lens. Also can't beat the price for the focal length.
