Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Spanning an impressive wide-angle to super-telephoto range, the Canon EF-mount 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD from Tamron is a true all-in-one lens to suit photographing the widest of vistas to the details of wildlife. Designed for APS-C-format DSLRs, this 28.8-640mm equivalent lens uses a three-step extension design to maintain a compact and lightweight form factor despite its expansive reach. In regard to the optics, a series of aspherical and low dispersion elements help to correct various aberrations and distortion for consistent sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range.

Benefitting the reach and optical layout, this lens also features an HLD autofocus motor that delivers quick and responsive focusing performance that is also quiet to benefit video recording needs. Vibration Compensation is also featured, which corrects for up to 2.5 stops of camera shake to help deliver sharper imagery when shooting handheld. Additionally, supporting this 18-400mm's all-in-one designation, a moisture-resistant construction ensures its use in trying environmental conditions.

All-in-one zoom is designed for Canon EF-mount APS-C-format DSLRs, and provides a 28.8-640mm equivalent focal length range.
Two molded glass aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range to deliver notable sharpness and accurate rendering.
Three low dispersion elements suppress chromatic aberration and color fringing to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) motor delivers fast, precise, and responsive focusing performance that benefits both stills and video applications. The motor's design and circular arc shape also contributes to the lens's compact overall form factor.
Vibration Compensation helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to 2.5 stops for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Moisture-resistant construction enables this lens's use during inclement weather conditions.
Both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip and, additionally, a Zoom Lock mechanism prevents the zoom from accidentally extending when not in use.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best all-in-one lens ever made! By: Jack I've had this lens for only two weeks and am absolutely thrilled with it. It is tack-sharp throughout the entire zoom range, much more so than the Tamron 16-300 mm lens I traded in. I bought this lens mainly for travel and convenience, to avoid hauling several heavy lenses around. No more changing lenses with the risk of dirt invading the camera sensor, This lens has a solid professional feel to it and it looks really neat. The zooming is smooth with no stiffness, and there is also no lens creep. I would certainly recommend this lens to a friend. Tamron has a real winner here!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamron Has Hit A Home Run I have been looking for another walk around lens to replace my 18-200mm lens. The images I have captured so far have been above and beyond my expectations. The images taken hand held with VC at 400mm have been tack sharp. In fact all the images taken from 18mm to 400mm are very sharp. The weight is a little heavier than lenses that I have been using, but present no problems. The creep lock keeps the lens from creeping out when I have the camera hanging by my side on an over the shoulder strap. I have two other Tamron lenses and this has that great Tamron quality and reliability. I won't be using my 100-400mm 'L' series lens that much with this new lens!!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamron 18/400 Lense As a nature photographer, I was looking for a lens that would allow me to get better photographs of animals without spending a large amount of money. My boss recommended the Tamron 18/400 as a good lens for the purpose I was intending to use it for. Took it out for a day of photography and was very pleased with performance. I took my tripod along, but found I could hold the camera still enough for birds, alligators and other interesting non animal items I found hiking along the bayou. Even when I came upon an old farm, I found that I could still take good pictures of the buildings and farm implements without changing to my non-zoom lens. Very happy with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Tamron Lens I purchased this lens to replace my aging Tamron 18-270 that I bought when it first came out years ago and have shot over 10k photos with. This lens makes my fifth Tamron lens purchase (18-270, 90mm, 10-24 and 150-600) and have never had an issue with any of my Tamron lenses. I had considered a Canon lens instead of this but I would then have to carry multiple lenses to cover the focal range that I can get in one Tamron lens. I have only used it for a few weeks and am impressed with the quality and the focal range available. Can't wait to get out once Spring arrives and really test it out. No regrets on not switching to Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all purpose lens I was at a concert in San Francisco last Sunday. This lens did not let me down. I don't know how may feet I was away from the stage, but If I shot at 400mm I could full the frame with one person on stage. I shot in M mode (1/500 - f/8) all my photos came out very, very nice. I didn't have anything to complain about...accept that when zooming is past 250mm, it starts to get a little difficult to turn the focus ring. I've never had this problem with any other zoom lens. Other than that, I love this lens. This lens is it for me (other than a macro lens I'd like to have) I've also shot Birds, my Cat & Dog, Flowers, Head Shots & Portraits. I have not shot any sports with it yet, but I'm planning on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for my needs I haven't given this the true professional test. That's because I'm not a professional. What I've used it for, has put a smile on my face. For me this lens shoots extremely well from 18mm to 400mm. At 400mm I've only shot at f/8 and higher and my images are sharp and the colors are spot on. I still conduct some Post Processing, but who doesn't? This is the ultimate walk around lens. I will be attending a concert in Stern Grove Park (SF) this weekend. I will be testing the heck out of this lens and will update my results in this review. Subject shot so far: Birds, Flowers (macro), Pets, Photoshoot of a so-called Model, Planes, My family, Head Shots. I have been very happy with the results. Oh...what do I have this lens attached to? A Canon EOD 77D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 Di Ii Vc Hld Lens For Canon EOS 70 I have only had the lens for a few weeks and have had a few opportunities to use it. So far I am very pleased with the quality and the range. I love the fact that I no longer have to change lenses during an average shoot. If I am doing some set up shot I have no issue changing lenses however while walking around I am thrilled not to lose an shot based on having the wrong lens on the camera. The range is great. If I had one wish I would wish it were lighter but the weight is not too bad and the range more than compensates for this slight issue. I would strongly recommend this for someone who travels or is inclined towards taking a camera with them 'just in case something catches their eye.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens I live in a desert and I can’t change lenses in the field without damaging my camera. This is a fantastic all in one lens. I especially appreciate that the lens is weather resistant. About 1/3 of my work is macro photography an this lens works well enough that I’m no longer considering buying a macro lens. I’ve only had this lens a week, but I haven’t discovered anything I don’t like. I did have to do some adjusting getting accustomed to the autofocus. It’s significantly quieter than I’m used to. I’m looking forward to taking this lens to a wildlife preserve and shooting birds.
