Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Spanning an impressive wide-angle to super-telephoto range, the Nikon F-mount 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD from Tamron is a true all-in-one lens to suit photographing the widest of vistas to the details of wildlife. Designed for DX-format DSLRs, this 27-600mm equivalent lens uses a three-step extension design to maintain a compact and lightweight form factor despite its expansive reach. In regard to the optics, a series of aspherical and low dispersion elements help to correct various aberrations and distortion for consistent sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range.

Benefitting the reach and optical layout, this lens also features an HLD autofocus motor that delivers quick and responsive focusing performance that is also quiet to benefit video recording needs. Vibration Compensation is also featured, which corrects for up to 2.5 stops of camera shake to help deliver sharper imagery when shooting handheld. Additionally, supporting this 18-400mm's all-in-one designation, a moisture-resistant construction ensures its use in trying environmental conditions.

All-in-one zoom is designed for Nikon F-mount DX-format DSLRs, and provides a 27-600mm equivalent focal length range.
Two molded glass aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range to deliver notable sharpness and accurate rendering.
Three low dispersion elements suppress chromatic aberration and color fringing to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.
HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) motor delivers fast, precise, and responsive focusing performance that benefits both stills and video applications. The motor's design and circular arc shape also contributes to the lens's compact overall form factor.
Vibration Compensation helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to 2.5 stops for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Moisture-resistant construction enables this lens's use during inclement weather conditions.
Both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip and, additionally, a Zoom Lock mechanism prevents the zoom from accidentally extending when not in use.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

    Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 56.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What I Was Looking For! Since i am getting up in years, I am 74, I was looking to basically downsize my camera gear. I wanted one lens that would be the only lens I had to carry on trips, or just going out shooting. I did research, looked at several lens, Nikon, Sigma, Tokina, and finally decided on the Tamron. The range, going from 18 to 400 mm is perfect for me, and my Nikon D5300. The picture quality is better than I expected, in all focal lengths. It focuses fast and accurate. It is very light, attached to my D5300, complete with battery, the weight is a little over 3 pounds. I love it, and I would certainly recommend it to my friends, and to anyone looking for a good, light weight lens. Yes, I would buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best all around lens I've used I shoot almost everything from sports, wildlife, landscapes etc. I have used this lens for a week now and have shot several thousand images and I have to say that the image quality is excellent. The focus is fast and accurate. The dynamic range matches that of much more expensive lens. This lens is on my Nikon D7000 (crop sensor) and it performs amazingly well. Simply put, in my opinion the Tamron 18-400mm is the best all around lens that I have ever used so far. Well worth the price. So much so that my husband is going to get one as soon as he cleans out his camera bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tamron tight Arrived on time from B&H photo. Immediately put the lens to work on my Nikon1 v2 w/an ft1 lens mount adapter and also with my Nikon d3300. I noted fairly quickly that the zoom ring is very tight/slow to manipulate by hand. In burst mode, the lens lagged when shooting birds on the go. I also noted that, in order to obtain clarity with macro, I had to manually zoom out and back in again when changing subjects. Not a pro photographer, so, perhaps there's a learning curve when operating the Tamron 18-400mm. Optimistically...my fingers are crossed...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Zoom Range ! Excellent travel lens with a unbelievable zoom range from 18mm to 400mm (27mm-600mm on my Nikon D7200 body). I have included two pictures, taken from the same position illustrating this range. Lens seems very well constructed, not overly large. Zoom ring is very wide, a nice feature but is somewhat stiff turning between 50mm to 200mm. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pictures at all focal lengths, not prime lens quality but exceptional considering the available zoom range of this lens. Overall a great addition to my lens collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic lens This is a great lens ---- especially for the price. I bought it for a Nikon camera and have been very happy with the results I've gotten. The two shots I've attached are handheld with VC switched on. The lens seems to be sharpest at around f/8. The lens is very well made and it's not too big or heavy. The zoom and focus rings move smoothly. The only negative I have is with the hood; it seems a little fragile, but that's not a big deal. I own another Tamron lens (70-200mm f/2.8 G2) that I use with my Nikon D850 and it's great too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it I love this lens. I am so so glad that I bought it. it covers the range that I need. The only small gripes I have about it is the zooming past 100mm or so is a little hard but gets easier and the other being the way to turn the lens to zoom in (only because I am so used to sigma lenses) but those are small things and you get used to them over time, like you do with anything. Over all I absolutely Love this lens. Thank you for selling it to me.I totally recommend this

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well done, Tamron Before researching this lens, I hadn't ever used a Tamron product so I was a little hesitant, but after a couple weeks of debating with myself, I made the smart decision of going with this lens. There were some reviews of distortion at the wide end, but I've had zero of that so far. I'm highly impressed with the sharpness at 18mm, as well as the amount of detail all the way at 400mm. I cannot say enough how convenient it is not to be changing your lens in the middle of a shoot, hike, etc. I don't want to over-hype this lens, but it may be the only one you'll need, unless you're a professional and need a dozen lenses. Not to mention, the price is an absolute bargain for how many types of photos you can take with this. I have it paired with a D7200 and a soon to be MB-D15, making the balance perfect, while also looking like a beast. If you're thinking about buying this lens, just go ahead and do it. You WILL NOT be disappointed!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good all purpose lens I just got this lens yesterday. Photography is my hobby and I have been doing it for about 30 years. This lens is fairly quick at focusing - photos looks sharp. The one biggest disappointment is that it does not have manual override when using auto focus like the Tamron 16-300mm lens does - which I also own. I wanted this new lens for the reach of 400mm. So far - so good.
