Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by apt focusing speed and image stabilization, the Nikon F-mount SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 from Tamron is a revised fast standard zoom covering a versatile wide-angle to portrait-length range. A sophisticated optical design with two extra refractive elements, three low dispersion elements, three glass-molded aspherical elements, and one hybrid aspherical element helps to suppress aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range while eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity. Balancing its optical attributes, this lens also utilizes a USM autofocus motor to deliver notably quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance that suits both stills and video applications. Also, 5-stop-effective Vibration Compensation helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, the lens is moisture-resistant and has a fluorine coating on the front element to enable its use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range, and benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
Two XR (extra refractive) and three LD (low dispersion) elements are featured in the optical design to noticeably limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity, color fidelity, and apparent sharpness.
Three glass-molded aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range to deliver notable sharpness and accurate rendering.
Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops or more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results, while Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements.
An Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 1.25' away.
A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Reviews

SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 114.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I got the last one in the store two weeks ago. I tested the Nikon next to mine in the store because I couldn't really believe the online reviews for this lens-they were so positive and I'm a Nikon guy and would have considered spending the money. They didn't have a demo so I could only try the Nikon 24-70. I took a chance and bough the Tamron after not being so incredibly impressed with what I saw. But this Tamron is the sharpest lens I've ever owned. Glad I took the chance. Believe the online reviews...I'm just an amateur photographer-serious one, though. It's replace my 24-120 lens on my Nikon D750.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its a sharp lens I was lucky to be one of the first ones to receive this lens from BH. I can not tell you how happy I am with it. Tamron has really gone for the gold on this one. Its smaller and lighter then the new Nikon 24-70 VR. So balance is great in comparison and the image quality is just as good. I really can not tell the difference when i place images from both side by side. Overall, its a great lens. Worth the price. On the 24-70. I would say get this one instead of the Nikon. On the 70-200, its a different story. But size and weight matters. Especially when running and gunning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best for Me I was really torn between this and the Nikkor 24-70 VR - not alone I know. Both are undoubtedly fine lenses. Academically I guess the edge would go to the Nikkor, but two factors tipped the scales for me, size and price. I mean BIG differences for, from what I can tell, marginal gains in IQ and build quality. I own the Nikkor 70-200 E, so I'm willing to pay the high price when justified. 6-year warranty trumps Nikon, and my past experience with Tamron service has been great. So far I am very pleased and think I made the right decision - for me. Images with this and the D850 are stellar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compared to Tamron 24-70 Di VC I was looking for a replacement to my 3 year old Tamron 24-70 Di VC. I wanted faster focusing, sharper at larger aperture then f4, and all around better build quality. Frist thing I can say after about 48 hours of testing, I did get all of those, plus VC has been improved a lot , and one thing I have notice it my copy of the prior Tamron 24-70 seem to overexpose between f2.8-5.6. I'm not sure since this is the electromagnetic diaphram, but my G2 does not have this issue at all. Overall, I have no regrets

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens value I bought this lens for run 'n gun video shooting with my Canon C100. After my first shoot, this has now become my goto lens for client projects. Canon's 24-70mm ?f/2.8 lens doesn't have image stabilization, which I find essential for chasing around all day with a monopod. I almost didn't bring this new lens along for the shoot, thinking there would be plenty of light. What the heck - I'll bring it "just in case". ?Well, Justin Case showed up immediately, where I quickly changed lenses to accommodate low-light.This lens performed wonderfully. Clear, sharp images and fast enough glass to enable me to see in darkish hallways and classroom where I had no control over the light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from On par with Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 I cannot believe I'm typing this. This new Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 G2 lens is a hair sharper than the Nikon 24-70 2.8 (VR), and on par with the sharper earlier generation Nikon 24-70 2.8 (No VR). At extreme pixel peeping, the Tamron is a touch soft wide open, but is crispy as h-e-double hockey sticks stopped down to 3.2. Being a touch soft wide-open is not a deal breaker as almost every fixed zoom and prime lens has a sweet spot a stop or two down from it's maximum aperture. This lens gets tack sharp in LESS than a full stop at f3.2 and razor sharp at f3.5. Tamron has stepped up it's game...and is offering this gem at $1,200 less than the current Nikon 24-70 VR version. For that price, you can literally buy both the Tamron 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 10/10 Would buy again Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Nikon F I get this lens today and this is my first expression and test picture. This picture low light condition . I decided to purchase the Tamron G2 because of the price, looks and specs. VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops or more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. And works very well. I sold my Nikon 24-70/2.8 and i am so happy with this decision. SJ

Rated 5 out of 5 by from S I have owned the 24-70 G2 since August 9 and have found it to be very sharp through the zoom range with excellent image quality. Focus is fast and near silent, With the vibration control works well below a 1/30/ Build quality feels solid with zoom and focus rings turning smoothly. I have not tried Zooms with video but think with practice you can archive acceptable results. It's also nice Tamron includes a soft pouch for the lens. At this price point it is a great addition to any lens kit,

Has anyone actually used this lens with a Nikon Z ...

Has anyone actually used this lens with a Nikon Z body? Does it work? (I know it’s supposed to work, but sometimes 3rd party lenses do not.)
    Asked by: Daniel
No and then yes. This did not originally work with my Nikon Z7 + FTZ adapter. I subsequently purchased a Tamron TAP-in Console for Nikon F Lenses (B&H $50.00 as of May 2019). Using the TAP-in Console, I was able to upgrade the lens' firmware. It worked fine after that.

I heard this lens doesn't support on Canon C200 EF even if the lens is for Canon EF mount. please let me know is this support or not...?
    Asked by: Priyananda P.
I would assure you there is a misunderstanding. The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Canon EF B&H # TA2470C will work perfectly with any Canon EF mount camera, including the Canon C200. I imagine what you heard was that if you took this Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Nikon F, put a Nikon F to Canon EF adapter on it, mounted it on a camera, it would not transmit any electronic signal or power. That is true. In other words, you could get the Nikon F version of this lens on a C200, then manually focus and zoom but you could not control the aperture, have auto focus or metadata.

Do you sell this lense with US warranty only? or I can get this lense with International warranty and is there a price difference in that case?
    Asked by: Sushobhan D.
This lens comes with a 6 year Tamron warranty against defects which is valid in the US only. We do offer the Complete Protection Plan from Squaretrade for an additional cost which is honored outside the US. Those come in 2 and 3 year options. The pricing can be seen and compared by adding the lens to your cart.

What's the difference between this and the older version? And will the price of the older version stay lower?
    Asked by: Robin V.
The G2 version improves upon the original in terms of the lens coatings, faster autofocus, and the ability to update the firmware of the lens as needed using the TAP-In Console.

Is the manual focus control a floating ring (like the native Sony) or true (like Canon)?
    Asked by: Andy
They mean is it fly-by-wire focus? As in linear manual focus, it matters for video work
