Sachtler Ace XL Tripod System Overview

The Sachtler Ace XL Tripod System with 75mm bowl combines the Ace XL fluid head with the Ace 75/2 CF carbon fiber tripod and a mid-level spreader. Designed for digital cine-style cameras, the Ace XL supports rigs weighing up to 17.6 pounds. The Ace XL fluid head features eight steps of counterbalance and three steps of pan and tilt drag adjustment, plus a zero drag option for pan and tilt. Cameras are mounted using the slide-in balancing plate. With a sliding range of 4.1", this head can adapt to a variety of rig configurations. Additional features include a detachable right-side pan bar and an illuminated bubble level. With an integrated flat head base, the Ace XL can be used when shooting with a slider.

This 75mm bowl-based combo has a 31 to 67" height range for capturing low and high shots. Its integrated mid-level spreader aids in quickly setting the tripod up on level or uneven surfaces. The rubber feet at the base of the two-stage legs can be removed, exposing dual spikes for extra stability outdoors. When you've completed shooting, collapse the Ace XL Tripod System to its 34" folded length and pack it into the included padded case.

Sachtler Ace XL Tripod System Reviews

Make sure it meets your needs

I have an Aktiv 6 system that I use with my Komodo. When I got another Komodo I was debating on another or go with the Ace. The Ace is absolutely great and it's half the cost. As others have said, the build quality is not the same as the Aktiv series but again it's half the cost. I would recommend this for DSLR, Mirrorless, or smaller cameras such as the Komodo, Z-Cam, C-70, etc. It is light, a small footprint, and extremely portable. My problem is when I attempted to use it with my Edelkrone slider and HeadPlus and it ended up being too much weight. While I ended up getting another Aktiv 6 I do want to say that if you know the weight and planned usage you will not regret this. I felt the quality was very good and I would not have any concerns about it lasting for years.

Great Tripod for the price

Big Fan of Sachtler Tripods having used used many of them. The Flow Tech legs are the easiest tripod legs I've ever used. In comparison to the Video 30 fluid head or one of the more expensive heads this is one isn't as good...obviously! It's a fraction of the price but defiantly holds its own. I would consider this the best tripod in It's price point. Very happy with it. I will be buying the ground spreader as I prefer that for sandbagging

Tripod head cracked within 10 months

I was really loving this tripod for the first 10 months, however, after 10 months of use in a professional setting (always used properly on set and ALWAYS in the bag), a piece of the tripod head near the quick release button fell off and the quick release button (the red button) fell out. I literally took the tripod out of the bag at a shoot and the piece fell off. I sent the head in for repair immediately to Vitec, the group that handles repairs for Sachtler, expecting for them to repair it and send it back considering I haven't even had it for 1 year. Instead, they billed me for the repair (close to $300) and will not cover it, as they said it was damage caused by use of the equipment and not a manufacturing defect. I'm a bit miffed. How cheap and crappy is this product if a piece can just break off within one year of normal use?!? I just expected a lot more out of a $1,700 tripod. I have had Manfrotto tripods for 10+ years and have never had a head break and piece fall off. If you look at the area where this happened, the piece is thin and does look like it can be easily broken. I'm curious if this commonly happens to this tripod head? I have other Sachtler tripods that I am very happy with, so overall I think this is top notch company, however, I would avoid this particular tripod head. Or, if you are going to get this, keep it in a sturdier case.

Super light and the fluid head works like a champ.

My first Flow Tech Legs

This is my first tripod with Flowtech legs. I love it. It's light but still solid and sturdy. I'll be holding onto it for the foreseeable future. I may replace the head down the road though. The ACE XL head is cool, but if I graduate up to a heavier camera or if I build my FX6 up significantly, I will want a heavier duty head - probably one that is side loading.

This is my first and only tripod, purchased now about 8 years ago. When I was new to videography and shopping for gear, I balked at the price of the Ace XL. A savvy friend advised me to get a very good tripod and spend some money because the tripod would last through several generations of cameras. It's true, I'm on my second camera -- my first was a Sony camcorder and the new gear is a mirrorless system, the Alpha 7s iii and lenses. The Sachtler, meantime, is like new. The fluid ball head is very smooth. the carbon fiber legs make it easier to carry. Before buying this one I'd tried out another very big brand tripod, but it was clunky compared with this beauty. The carrier has held up great too.

I'll admit it's nice, but...

Although my tripod was delivered in December 2021, as of April 2022, it's only been lightly used. I was out on a shoot a few days ago and heard something fall off of it. It was the pan brake knob (Sachtler S2150-1902). I can't find a replacement on B&H. However, I did find a replacement on Full Compass for a staggering $39.50!!! I paid almost $1,000 for this Sachtler Ace tripod. Not cool.

If I had a C200 or similar using a vct plate, could this head support the force of locking the plate in place?

A VCT plate assembly could attach to the Plate included with the ACE XL head. It supports up to 17lb payloads and should not have issues with weight or the force of mounting the C200 with a VCT baseplate.
