Canon 6D Mark II Overview

By B&H Photo's

Step up into the full-frame game with the EOS 6D Mark II DSLR Camera from Canon, which is made available here with the EF 24-105mm f/4 IS II USM Lens. Making high-performance full-frame imaging more accessible, the 6D Mark II makes numerous advancements over its predecessor to improve upon every aspect of image capture and creation. The main update comes in the form of a 26.2MP CMOS sensor and the use of the DIGIC 7 Image Processor to deliver sharper, more vivid imagery in a variety of shooting situations. This setup offers an improved native sensitivity range of ISO 100-40000, which can then be expanded to ISO 50-102400, as well as speedy shooting rates of up to 6.5 fps.

Ensuring your images are tack sharp is a 45-point all-cross type AF system, which is able to track subjects with accuracy. This marks a significant improvement over its predecessor and will result in faster acquisition of your subject. Along with a revamped AF system, the sensor features Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology to provide a boost to focusing in live view and video shooting, which itself has been bumped up to Full HD at 60p. This setup works well with the 3.0" 1.04m-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD, which permits use at various angles and with intuitive controls.

For hybrid stills/video shooters, you will enjoy the enhanced video quality as well as the ability to plug in an external mic via a 3.5mm input. Users will also have the ability to create 4K time-lapse movies as well as HDR video with dedicated settings and modes. Additionally, the body design has received an upgrade with improved ergonomics and durability, including dust and water resistance. Users will have access to many connectivity options as well, such as Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth, for connecting to a smart device, and built-in GPS for geotagging your photos.

Included with the camera body is the versatile and high-performing EF 24-105mm f/4 IS II USM Lens. This setup provides a wide-angle to telephoto zoom range that will cover most standard subject matter with ease while also offering a constant f/4 maximum aperture for consistent performance. The lens also packs in both image stabilization and a fast, near-silent ring-type USM AF motor for fast, accurate focusing performance.

26.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Offering boosts to both resolution and low-light performance, the 6D Mark II uses a newly developed 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor that works in tandem with a DIGIC 7 Image Processor to create sharp, vivid imagery and video. This contributes to high performance in low light with native sensitivity range of ISO 100-40000, which can then be expanded to ISO 50-102400, if desired.

Assisting with the capture of properly exposed images is a 7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor that helps minimize the impact of flickering lights in your images and ensures accurate reading of the entire scene.
45-Point All-Cross Type AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF Systems
Ensuring your subject is tack sharp, the 6D Mark II incorporates an all-cross type AF system, which offers 45 phase-detect points, for advanced tracking and focusing while using the optical finder for stills. This AF system can operate in lighting conditions as low as -3 EV and will work with various lenses with maximum aperture of f/8 and smaller, though with a maximum of 27 points. Five different AF area selection modes are available as well, for optimizing performance to your subject matter.

When using Live View and recording video, you can now use Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the actual imaging sensor. This offers wide coverage of phase-detection autofocus for faster and more accurate focusing in these modes. It is ideal for video as users will enjoy smoother rack focusing without the downsides normally encountered with contrast-based systems. Also, this works well with the touchscreen functions, allowing shooters to just tap to adjust focus.
Full HD Video Recording
For multimedia creation, the 6D Mark II comes equipped with powerful Full HD video recording options. The 6D Mark II offers improved speed with a maximum frame rate of 60p when capturing Full HD video. It also offers Digital IS with 5-axis image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This benefits recording while walking or moving, and can also be used in conjunction with lenses featuring optical IS for more effective overall stabilization. Audio is high quality as well, with the ability to use either the built-in microphone or an external microphone via a 3.5mm input.
Body Design
  • A large 3.0" 1.04m-dot vari-angle LCD monitor is available for bright, vivid image playback and live view shooting, and its touchscreen interface features an anti-smudge design and can be used for intuitive touch-to-focus control and adjusting settings in the menus.
  • A single SD card slot is available for saving photos and video.
  • Optical viewfinder offers approximately 98% coverage of the frame and has a magnification of 0.71x.
  • The durable body design is dust- and weather-sealed to permit working in harsh environments.
Other Camera Features
  • A built-in GPS module allows you to geotag imagery in-camera as well as auto time sync with the Universal Time Code via satellites. This module is compatible with American GPS, Russian GLONASS, and Japanese quasi-zenith Michibiki satellites for a wide coverage of support.
  • A built-in intervalometer permits the creation of UHD 4K time-lapse imagery and supports recording consecutive frames in pre-selected intervals.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity enable wireless sharing, control, and image transfer with a compatible smart device as well as the CS100 Connect Station.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens

An advanced one-lens solution, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM is a Canon L-series zoom covering wide-angle to short-telephoto focal lengths and featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. The version II of this popular lens sports a redeveloped optical design, which includes four aspherical elements to significantly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for great sharpness and accurate subject rendering. Individual elements feature an Air Sphere Coating, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy in harsh lighting conditions.

Complementing the refined optics, this 24-105mm f/4 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. A four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
Four glass-molded aspherical elements, including one large-diameter double-sided glass-molded lens, help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
An Air Sphere Coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.

Would this camera make a decent B cam for a Canon C100?
Asked by: Adam
Yes, this would be a good pick for a B camera for shooting with the C100. This camera also features Canon's venerable Dual Pixel AF in video, so if your C100 has that feature there also won't be a noticeable difference in how the two different cameras pull focus. If you have the original C100 without the Dual Pixel AF upgrade then this will offer better focusing in video.

I do not get the images I want from the 90D. Should I switch to Canon 6D Mark ll? Is it more forgiving?
Asked by: Connie
The Canon EOS 6D Mark II DSLR Camera has a larger sensor than the Canon EOS 90D DSLR Camera. For this reason, images will have better detail and less noise when shooting in low light.

I am looking for a camera to live stream with. If I were to get a dedicated camera for video, it would be the C100 but we could use a camera for still photography too. Would this suit us for live streaming? Also, has anyone ran audio from a mixer into the mic input with success? I will be live streaming speaking engagements with up to 6 microphones.
Asked by: James
After reading what you said, I would recommend a camcorder with a XLR input as the most efficient and practical for live streaming and inputting 6 microphones. Cameras such as the C100 and 6D frankly are better for higher end image productions where the takes are short and the audio recorded separately. This camera would be far better suited for basic live streaming: Canon XA11 Compact Full HD Camcorder with HDMI and Composite Output B&H # CAXA11 The 6D Mark II is a stills camera that can do video. It cannot record more than 29 minutes and 59 seconds and it has only a moderate quality audio circuit. If you have further questions, please email us. [email protected].

question

What cable do I need to connect to my computer to download pictures?
Asked by: Gregory C.
There are three ways to download the images from the 6D Mark II. If your computer has a SD card slot, take the card out of the camera and put it into the slot and download that way. This is the fastest way with no muss or fuss. If the computer does not have SD card slot, we recommend a card reader such as this. This way your camera is not being used as a really expensive card reader and can reside safely in it's case. Here are two suggestions: Kingston MobileLite G4 Multi-Function SD / microSD Card Reader B&H # KIFCRMLG4 and Delkin Devices USB 3.1 Gen 1 Dual Slot SD UHS-II and CF Memory Card Reader B&H # DEDDREADER44. If you still wish to use a direct cable here is one. Canon IFC-400PCU USB 2.0 Type A to Mini USB Type B Cable (4') B&H # CAIFC400PCU. Open the images in your photo processing program. If you do not have any program, you can download a basic one from Canon as well as a electronic manual. <a href= http://www.canon.com/icpd/ target= _blank >http://www.canon.com/icpd/</a>
