Afinia EinScan-SE (Elite) 3D Scanner with Turntable
Key Features
  • Scans Using Fixed or Auto Modes
  • Fixed Scans are Stationary
  • Auto Scans Use a Rotating Turntable
  • Auto Scans Stitched Into One Object
Designed for educators and home hobbyists, the EinScan-SE (Elite) 3D Scanner with Turntable from Afinia is able to create 3D models with high accuracy for a range of creative 3D printing and design applications. The EinScan-SE is able to scan using two modes - auto and fixed. A fixed scan is used without the turntable, where the user has to manually turn the object and perform a scan after each time the object is turned, making it useful for objects too large for the turntable. Fixed scans are usually done with the scanner head mounted on a user-supplied tripod. In auto scan mode, the object to be scanned is placed on the turntable and the scanning software will automatically turn the object and scan the item from multiple angles that add up to 360°. The software also automatically stitches each of these scans into one object. The EinScan-SE must be used with either the turntable or a tripod and does not have any handheld functions.

The Afinia EinScan-SE scans using a white light source, which is created by a projector and is safer than laser scanning, has an accuracy of ≤0.1mm, can scan items as small as 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.2", and as large as 27.6 x 27.6 x 27.6". Automatic scanning takes around 2 minutes, while fixed scans take around 8 seconds, and completed scans can be printed on Afinia's H800+, H480, and H400 3D printers. This scanner is compatible with Windows 10, 8, and 7 systems running at least a Core i5 CPU with 8GB of RAM, 16GB of hard drive space, and an NVIDIA series graphics card with 1GB of video memory. Included is a calibration pattern assembly, a USB cable, a power cord, and a power adapter.

Afinia Einscan-SE Reviews

Exactly what I was looking for (after trial and error).

I had been considering a 3D scanner for leveling up my toy customization 3D printing workflow, something that would allow me to scan individual parts for copying, modification, and ensuring tolerances for new parts. Unfortunately, reviews didn't point to lower-end machines like the Revopoint POP meeting my needs, but pro-level tools were pretty far outside a hobbyist price range. The EinScan SE seemed to fall somewhere right in the middle. The output from the SE (once I figured out the interface) was excellent, capturing a ton of detail pretty accurately. It did have some trouble/take longer on parts that were smaller than recommended, in which case it really helps to paint the item white. As you can see from the images, my first successful scan was a part that was about an inch and a half long by 3/4 of an inch wide, with a very detailed underside. Once imported into Blender, the scan included all surface details (although, of course, there's some softness to the smallest ones). The machine itself is great. The only reason I docked it a star is that that software and documentation really could be easier to understand. Even having an actual printed manual in the box would have been helpful.

How well does the EinScan SE handle scanning ...

How well does the EinScan SE handle scanning small objects with high amounts of details? In particular 22-150mm scale miniatures with high levels of details.
Asked by: Christopher
Yes, but with caveats. I've been using it to scan model parts in the 10mm to 200mm range. At the higher end, you will have no problems and get high detail as long as you do multiple passes and remove noise from the point cloud between scans. At the lower end your meshes are going to end up a bit muddy, showing only major features and taking quite a bit longer (though painting the item white helps).
