Samyang 35mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its sleek size, the AF 35mm f/2.8 FE Lens from Samyang is a compact wide-angle prime designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Its versatile wide angle of view is well-suited to general shooting applications and its slim form factor is ideal for travel and everyday photography. The optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and one high refractive index element to suppress spherical aberrations in order to achieve a high degree of sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to control flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. The lens's autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' AF systems for quick and precise focusing performance, and manual focus override is also available for more refined control.

Compact wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
Maximum f/2.8 aperture helps to achieve the slim, portable form factor while also remaining versatile for use in a variety of lighting conditions.
Two aspherical elements and one high refractive index element help control spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness, resolution, and clarity.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and a neutral color balance.
The integrated autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' focusing systems for quick, accurate, and precise AF control. Manual focus override is also available for refining your focus position.
Seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Aluminum alloy housing is both lightweight and durable.

    Samyang 35mm f/2.8 reviews

AF 35mm f/2.8 FE Lens for Sony E is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from The lens is sharp, but the quality control is questionable. I got this lens to use with a Sony a7Riii. I received the lens and the camera together and I was very excited to exploit the full potential of this combo. However, as soon that I got it, I noticed a strange spot in the front element. Looking close, I realized that the spot is inside the lens. At first, I thought is was some sort of speck. But I took a macro photo of it and it seems that the coating of a inside element of the lens is pealing off. Check it by yoursef in the photo below. I took a couple of pictures with it and the images are sharp indeed, mainly when stoped down to F/4. But I will return this copy and ask for another one. Samyang quality control should have avoided this lens to be in the market.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for the price. This lens is as light as air. It is extremely sharp wide open and gets razor sharp stopped down to f4. Bokeh and color are nice too. When you need a tiny, air weight lens as your only companion for the day, this lens more than satisfies. Fast autofocus with not much sound. This lens is 1/3 the price of the Sony 35/2.8. It's a fantastic little bargain and I can think of a ton of ways it will come in handy for people, landscape, and vacation images.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a poor man's Zeiss. This Samyang 35mm f/2.8 is a gem. It's light, sharp, and inexpensive. I also own the Sony's 35mm f/2.8 ZA when I first got my a7riii. I did a little research on YouTube and found out that this Samyang is even sharper. I bought this Samyang along with a brand new a7III recently. I tested both Samyang and Sony Zeiss on both a7riii and a7iii. On the a7iii, their image quality is indistinguishable. However, when mounted it on the a7rIII, the Samyang is a titbit sharper than my Sony Zeiss. I'm selling my Sony Zeiss...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome lense. Just got it today, and after playing with it for a bit, I can say that the AF motor is not as loud as I thought. For the price it takes nice sharp pictures great bokeh, and very small, only negative is the motor noise. But bought it knowing that, so it's not a bother. I did give it 4 stars only because I had to exchange it due to the one I got having issues with the lock-on AF-C, it would lock on but any movement, and sometime when not even moving, it would go crazy and start searching for focus and will not find it unless the camera is still. I requested an exchange and hope to get one that works as the ones reviewed online.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like this lens, but for the price I LOVE IT! First of all this is obviously a budget lens that has in its favor a small form factor. AND... it has AF. I keep this lens on my camera (A7III) when traveling or when I don't need the 1.8s for professional work. People complained about noisy AF... in my experience the AF is silent when using AFC in video and only makes noise when you half press the shutter to force a refocus or in photo mode. Thats my experience. I have the 28mm f2, the 55 f1.8, and 85 f1.8 batis and this lens is great because its small, light, and has good image quality. I would give it a 4 in general but then you look at the price point and its a 5. Also I think when you keep the lens hood on that it is a handsome little lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost 5 stars Really small and light 35mm f2.8 lens, so convenient for a take anywhere. Just one problem... Looked at every review on YouTube before buying, but none mentioned that the steadyshot must be MANUALLY SET. That means when you put on the lens you have to remember to go into the menus and pick manual mode steadyshot, and 35mm for lens. THEN equally important when I switch to the 85mm (or whatever) to go back into the menus and put it into automatic steady shot again. This is a set of steps easily forgotten... Such a pain. I'm on the fence about returning it. Only the price keeps it in the bag (or on the body) at this point. I don't know if this can be updated in firmware, or even if Samyang wants to update it. But everyone considering this lens should know about this... hence my 3 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Turned out to be a great little lens I wanted a good, lightweight and compact 35mm lens for travel on an A7III. This lens has turned out to be excellent for this purpose. It is very compact and extremely light. Probably it’s more vulnerable to damage because of its plastic construction, but a stronger lens would have added to the weight and cost. The optics are surprisingly good. Images are sharp wide open and even sharper when stopped down, even on the new A7III sensor which so far seems really good. Distortion and chromatic aberration are minimal. Color is very good. Autofocus is very fast and accurate provided you’re focusing on the right spot. And the price couldn’t be better, especially when compared to the only higher priced alternative that’s really not much better. In brief, a surprisingly good, compact and fun-to-use lens for a great price.
