Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Offering reach and refined focusing performance, the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR from Nikon is a telephoto zoom covering a comfortable portrait-length to telephoto range. One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design, which aids in reducing chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color fidelity. A Super Integrated Coating, too, helps to achieve accurate colors by controlling flare and ghosting when working in bright and backlit conditions. Noteworthy for this lens is the AF-P designation, which indicates the use of a pulse stepping motor that offers notably quiet, fast, and precise autofocus performance to benefit both stills and video applications. Additionally, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for up to 4.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 105-450mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
AF-P pulse motor uses stepping motors to deliver impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Reviews

This lens is amazing value for money.

High quality optics with outstanding VR. Much lighter than the faster f2.8 70-200mm Nikon. Only downside is the maximum f4.5 that can be easily compensated with increased ISO with minimal reduction in image quality.

A fantastic lens that makes good compromises.

This lens does sacrifice some image quality aspects to hit a low price and focal length of 300mm. My assessments are all done on a focus calibrated D810. Wide open contrast is below average but not poor and sharpness is OK. You really do need to stop the lens down to get really good sharpness, especially at 300mm. The extended lens barrel at 300mm does have a slight wiggle when pressure is put on it, but in normal use it's perfectly straight. That's really all the bad I can say about this lens, all other aspects are wonderful. Focus is fast and accurate, it's light weight, and the VR works well. Choose this lens if you value versatility and price over ultimate performance.

Wonderful Lens at this Price Point

I had the opportunity to use this lens for the first time outdoors this past weekend and I was not disappointed. I have a Nikon D500 camera and felt like this lens paired well with the body. Focusing was quick--not lightening fast, but VERY quick. The zoom range is nice and I was able to capture some beautiful shots. The lens is relatively lightweight (less than I expected). At this price point, it is difficult to imagine finding a better lens. The B&H shopping experience, customer service, shipping, etc. was awesome as always.

Very Happy Customer

I recently purchased the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm lens for my Nikon D810 as I do a lot of hiking (and occasional street photography) and have missed many opportunities to capture wildlife or other shots simply by being too far away. I lamented for a while since most good zoom lenses are priced out of my budget range. When I realized this lens was not only something I could afford but also had great reviews, I jumped at buying it! I am so glad I did. I have only had it for a couple of weeks and have not yet taken it out for a proper workout. But I have used it in a few situations already and am very pleased by the quality of image it produces. So far, I have not found any fault with it at all. Everything is sharp and clear. So far, extending it all the way out to 300mm has not resulted in any distortions or aberration . It is very light, which is nice. I also find the VR is quite good when extending the zoom. Overall, I am plenty happy with this purchase! I am excited to get out on the hiking trail very soon to really give this baby a proper initiation, but I have every confidence already that I will not lose any opportunities that I had missed before!

An excellent lens

This will sound strange but I hadn't bought a new lens for my D7500 in quite a while, rented a few for special occasions but never bought. When this lens came I thought there was a problem with it since it was extremely tight trying to put it on. Even called the help line but no one offered that opinion. Took it to my daughter who has the same camera and she popped it on, admitting it was tight but that's the way new lenses are. I used it to photograph a horse jumping show over the 4th and am very pleased with the reach and fast focus. I especially like the option of the sport selector on the lens. Im glad I tested it with her camera and didn't return it. It is definitely a big improvement over the kit lens the camera came with.

Using lens on a Z5. Was a little hesitant to buy lens since it was an older F mount. I was pleasantly surprised how well it works on the Z5 with the FTZ adapter. Also images are quite sharp. Very nice for the price.

Appreciated upgrade.

Coming from a same focal length zoom Tamaron kit lens. Right out of the box the build quality is impressive. Little more heft, but not objectionably so. Focus was a little off, but very nice sharpness once I calibrated it. Also a very small amount of chromatic aberration at the long end, but big improvement over the Tamaron. VR, so far is amazing. Shooting at 200mm, 1/60th of a second hand held and getting very good results. Autofocus also seems much more responsive, more decisive than the Tamaron. I personally love the zoom range for shooting events, sports, portraiture. So while the Tamaron was a good start for my frugal, early years, this is a much appreciated upgrade in all areas, now that the above details are more meaningful to me. Great value for the money. Would definitely recommend if the zoom range works for you.

The AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR is compatible w/ the DX format, correct? How does the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR compare to the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lens that comes with the D3500 2 lens kit? Is it worth the upgrade? Primarily used for outdoor sports photography
Asked by: Eddie
I suggest you read Thom Hogan’s review of the lens. http://www.bythom.com/camera-lens-and-accessory/nikon-and-third-party-lens.html#.XTNwyy3Myl4 I have had the 70-300 4.5- 5.6 ED VR for a year now and yes it is worth the upgrade. At 300mm you are going to want that VR feature. The lens will work with both the FX and DX formats and I use it on both. Be sure your DX camera can support the AF-P lenses. Still, the D3500 with the two lenses is a bargain, just be sure you know what you will be giving up. Look at Thom Hogans review of these lenses.

Yes, the Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Lens will auto focus on the Nikon D300 SLR Digital Camera. There is one caveat in that because these models reset focus when reverting from standby status (timer off), pre-focus shooting is not available.
