Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Reach out with your full-frame DSLR by picking up the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Lens from Nikon. The F-mount lens provides a telephoto to super telephoto range and manages to stay relatively compact by using a variable maximum aperture of f/4.5-5.6. It also ensures optical quality throughout the range through the use of one extra-low dispersion element and a Super Integrated Coating. Assisting with operation of the lens is a pulse stepping motor AF system, with full-time manual focus override and an internal focus design, which works in tandem with Vibration Reduction image stabilization to produce tack sharp photos and video. Users will be able to take it out into the elements without worry thanks to a dust- and moisture-resistant design. Additionally, this lens incorporates Nikon's electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism for consistent exposures when working with fast continuous shooting rates and it has a rounded nine-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

This full-frame F-mount 70-300mm lens offers telephoto to super telephoto coverage and is also compatible with DX-format DSLRs where it provides an equivalent zoom range of 105-450mm.
Helping maintain a relatively compact and lightweight design is the use of a variable maximum aperture of f/4.5-5.6.
One extra-low dispersion element works to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
A pulse stepping motor AF system enables accurate and silent focusing that works well in both stills and video shooting.
Nikon's Vibration Reduction image stabilization is rated to compensate for up to 4.5 stops of shutter speed to reduce the effects of camera shake.
Full-time manual focus override allows instant switching between AF and MF focusing systems by just rotating the focus ring at any time.
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during operation and contributes to a lighter overall weight.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded, nine-blade diaphragm provides smooth, out-of-focus elements and highlights.

Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 reviews

AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worthy of consideration as an alternative to 70-200 f4 Traditionally, 70-300 lenses have been seen as more of a consumer lens rather than a professional lens, but with this release Nikon really have given us an excellent tool at a much lower price point, and weight, than you'd normally expect from a telephoto. It is surprisingly sharp throughout the zoom range, and one of the areas that it really performs well is in the autofocus lock-on speed - very competitive with the professional-grade zooms. The main drawback that I can see is heavy vignetting, but this of course is easily corrected in post. If you want a lighter weight telephoto, but don't want to compromise on sharpness, then I reckon this is a great alternative. Used on a D850.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Surprisingly Good Lens! I recently traveled to Scotland and carried this 70-300 lens along with the 16-35 f/4 and 50mm f/1.8 lenses. I had purchased the 70-300 specifically for the trip and was anxious to see how it performed with the high resolution Nikon D810. Turns out, this little telephoto handled everything the unpredictable weather of Scotland threw at it with nary a blink. The autofocus and VR performed flawlessly and the photos were surprisingly sharp. This lens may not permanently replace the 70-200 f/2.8 in my bag but it has definitely won the spot as the go-to telephoto when weight is an issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lente muito boa Eu comprei esta lente pela versatilidade e leveza.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great lens for the price Very nice lens. Quite fast - especially in Sports mode - and mostly accurate. Out of 400+ photos I shot at a parade last weekend only 3 were mis-focused on a D850. Colors are pretty good, sharpness mostly good. The lens is light enough that it doesn't need a tripod or tripod collar. Balances quite well on a D850. Not in the same league as the SIGMA Art 120-300, but for the price, I can't argue. On the D850, distortion is corrected by the camera as to be unnoticeable. In summary, it's a perfectly functional alternative to the super-expensive NIKKOR 70-200mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for its purpose I pre-ordered from B&H and they shipped out as soon as the lens arrived; excellent service as always from them. This lens is just what I hoped for to add to my airline carry on bag for assignments when weight and carry on space is a premium. Field tested with subjects I typically shoot for my agents stock files. Fits in my shoulder bag with my other basics just fine. I found the image quality to be very good. Tested images were very sharp, very good contrast, and very good color. Vibration reduction is smooth and auto focus almost instantaneous. I hope everyone who purchases this lens receives a copy as good as mine seems to be. A word of caution. This lens has an excellent weather seal around the lens mount. When mounting the lens on a camera body its tight. When removing the lens the first time I thought I had a mechanical problem; I don't like to strong arm anything. Determined it was the lens seal. My advice, while depressing the lens release button on the body, grip the lens firmly, and gently apply a constant rotating motion until the lens begins to move. Rotate gently but firmly until the lens releases from the camera body. Good thing is this tells me the weather seal will work. Many thanks from Millard

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellant I found this to be a fine lens. Just what I needed and hoped for to add in my airline carry on travel bag. Did thorough test of typical subjects I shoot for stock files. My images had very good contrast and were very sharp and crisp. Color was excellent. A word of caution. The weather seal is very very good, but be careful when removing the lens from the camera body. It is very tight and snug. At first I thought something mechanical was prohibiting lens removal. Don't strong arm the lens when rotating off, gentle rotating off will do it. I took this as a good thing; the weather seal will work. I hope everyone who buys this lens to add to their equipment will get one as good as mine seems to be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp, and very light. This lens is surprisingly light weight, at the same time tack sharp. You have to use at-least f 7.1 to see the tack sharp results. Very nice colors. AF is very fast and quiet. Construction looks solid. For the price its a highly recomended lens. I am using it with my D750.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great with the D850 I used this to shoot wildlife, the autofocus is very fast and silent. Images are sharp and it's nice to have a VR switch. This is the best 70-300mm lens period.
