Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Overview

  • 1Description

Offering reach and refined focusing performance, the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR from Nikon is a telephoto zoom covering a comfortable portrait-length to telephoto range. One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design, which aids in reducing chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color fidelity. A Super Integrated Coating, too, helps to achieve accurate colors by controlling flare and ghosting when working in bright and backlit conditions. Noteworthy for this lens is the AF-P designation, which indicates the use of a pulse stepping motor that offers notably quiet, fast, and precise autofocus performance to benefit both stills and video applications. Additionally, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for up to 4.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 105-450mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
AF-P pulse motor uses stepping motors to deliver impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Reviews

AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, Fast Auto-Focus, Holds Up On The D850 I am impressed and a little surprised that this lens is as good as it is at this price point. Sharp and really good on the D850, the auto focus is fast and accurate. The VR is impressive. So far I have no regrets, and this is coming from someone who would never have purchased any of the previous versions of this lens. A little fall off in extreme corners (just a bit worse than the 70-200 f/4 but darn close) and a little dark viewing at 300mm but well-balanced and really sharp images. I recommend it for those who need a lighter weight, longer-reaching and more compact walk-around zoom than the 70-200. I'm a demanding pro and my standards are high.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worthy of consideration as an alternative to 70-200 f4 Traditionally, 70-300 lenses have been seen as more of a consumer lens rather than a professional lens, but with this release Nikon really have given us an excellent tool at a much lower price point, and weight, than you'd normally expect from a telephoto.? It is surprisingly sharp throughout the zoom range, and one of the areas that it really performs well is in the autofocus lock-on speed - very competitive with the professional-grade zooms. The main drawback that I can see is heavy vignetting, but this of course is easily corrected in post.? If you want a lighter weight telephoto, but don't want to compromise on sharpness, then I reckon this is a great alternative.? Used on a D850.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Surprisingly Good Lens! I recently traveled to Scotland and carried this 70-300 lens along with the 16-35 f/4 and 50mm f/1.8 lenses. I had purchased the 70-300 specifically for the trip and was anxious to see how it performed with the high resolution Nikon D810. Turns out, this little telephoto handled everything the unpredictable weather of Scotland threw at it with nary a blink. The autofocus and VR performed flawlessly and the photos were surprisingly sharp. This lens may not permanently replace the 70-200 f/2.8 in my bag but it has definitely won the spot as the go-to telephoto when weight is an issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than I had hoped for I have only taken this out one time to shoot it vs my 300 mm f4 PF. Now I love the 300mm f4 (on a D-850) but I wanted a light weigh set of two lens for quick travel So with the 24-->85, and the 70 -->300 make a very nice pair. In shooting hummingbirds, the shoots from the two lens are very close, the zoom did much better than I had hoped for. The focus was very fast, even faster than the 300mm f4 . So far I give the lens a full 5 stars for the price, but I will still shoot the 300 mm f4. Please note this is for the f4-5.6E lens, Nikon has maybe 5 different 70-->300 lens, this lens is the best and does a very good job on the D-850.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens at a great value I have only had this lens for a few weeks. I recently was able to shoot at a golf tournament. I purchased this lens to use with my FTZ adapter on my Nikon Z6. This lens is light and the balance with the FTZ is very comfortable. Focus is fast and accurate and results are sharp. I missed one shot to an unfocused face but it turned out the focus area included the face as well as some area in front of the face. With a smaller focus point I probably would have been spot on. If you dont need a faster lens, this lens performs extremely well. It was a great upgrade from my old 80-200. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lente muito boa Eu comprei esta lente pela versatilidade e leveza.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great lens for the price Very nice lens. Quite fast - especially in Sports mode - and mostly accurate. Out of 400+ photos I shot at a parade last weekend only 3 were mis-focused on a D850. Colors are pretty good, sharpness mostly good. The lens is light enough that it doesn't need a tripod or tripod collar. Balances quite well on a D850. Not in the same league as the SIGMA Art 120-300, but for the price, I can't argue. On the D850, distortion is corrected by the camera as to be unnoticeable. In summary, it's a perfectly functional alternative to the super-expensive NIKKOR 70-200mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for its purpose I pre-ordered from B&H and they shipped out as soon as the lens arrived; excellent service as always from them. This lens is just what I hoped for to add to my airline carry on bag for assignments when weight and carry on space is a premium. Field tested with subjects I typically shoot for my agents stock files. Fits in my shoulder bag with my other basics just fine. I found the image quality to be very good. Tested images were very sharp, very good contrast, and very good color. Vibration reduction is smooth and auto focus almost instantaneous. I hope everyone who purchases this lens receives a copy as good as mine seems to be. A word of caution. This lens has an excellent weather seal around the lens mount. When mounting the lens on a camera body its tight. When removing the lens the first time I thought I had a mechanical problem; I don't like to strong arm anything. Determined it was the lens seal. My advice, while depressing the lens release button on the body, grip the lens firmly, and gently apply a constant rotating motion until the lens begins to move. Rotate gently but firmly until the lens releases from the camera body. Good thing is this tells me the weather seal will work. Many thanks from Millard
