Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Overview

Offering reach and refined focusing performance, the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR from Nikon is a telephoto zoom covering a comfortable portrait-length to telephoto range. One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design, which aids in reducing chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color fidelity. Additionally, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for up to 4.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 105-450mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
AF-P pulse motor uses stepping motors to deliver impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Reviews

Works pretty much as most positive reviews painted it

I'm new to photography. A few days to be precise. I've taken a couple online short photography courses and I decided to buy this lens to go with the Nikon D750. I'm loving the results so far.

Great improvement over previous version

Image quality at 300mm much improved. All my test shots at f/5.6 were much better than the previous 70 - 300mm. Very pleased.

The operation is smooth and accurate. It's a bit heavy to use on the Nikon Z50. However overall I'm pleased

Surprisingly excellent lens

I bought this lens as an inexpensive and lightweight option for when I don't want to carry the 700-200/2.8. I have been very impressed with AF performance, which is nearly instant and essentially silent. The image is not at the level of the 70-200/2.8 or the 300PF but is excellent nevertheless. AF speed and accuracy on the D800 is great, on the Z6ii it is even better. Added to all this, the build quality is essentially on par with the 80-400 for 1/4 the price. I am very impressed!

Wonderful improvement

I bought the AF-S lens 10 years ago. This lens seems to operate much quicker and quieter than the old lens. I have noticed that the pictures appear to be sharper throughout the whole zoom range. Great match for my D780.

Excellent Lens

Excellent lens for wildlife photography with the D500 camera. Not too heavy to carry and has excellent range.

As a general rule, I don't buy anything Keen Rockwell doesn't rate highly. A few years ago, I purchased this lens in a DX format and the photos were soft and disappointing. I tried again, buying this one in the FX format and could not be happier. The images are sharp, all through the different ranges, not only on my D850 but also my D500. This is my new "walking around" lens and unless I need a specialty lens for something, it stays mounted to my D850. Recently, I attended a family gathering and I loved the reach of this lens, singing out family members around the room, and the resulting images. I cannot recommend this lens enough and buying it from B&H was a pleasure. The shipping was free, fast, and the package well wrapped and protected. If you're reading this, you are already considering it. Take my advice and don't wait. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I bought this 70-300 for its ability to reach out a bit. But, for the cost I got what it cost. It is more of a toy than a Nikon lens. I do not expect to get the efficiency from it. The focusing is less then acceptable. Poor choice on my part. I will use the lens, but if it falls off a cliff, no great loss. Not really B & H's fault here.

The AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR is compatible w/ the DX format, correct? How does the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR compare to the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lens that comes with the D3500 2 lens kit? Is it worth the upgrade? Primarily used for outdoor sports photography
Asked by: Eddie
I suggest you read Thom Hogan’s review of the lens. http://www.bythom.com/camera-lens-and-accessory/nikon-and-third-party-lens.html#.XTNwyy3Myl4 I have had the 70-300 4.5- 5.6 ED VR for a year now and yes it is worth the upgrade. At 300mm you are going to want that VR feature. The lens will work with both the FX and DX formats and I use it on both. Be sure your DX camera can support the AF-P lenses. Still, the D3500 with the two lenses is a bargain, just be sure you know what you will be giving up. Look at Thom Hogans review of these lenses.
