Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Overview

By B&H Photo's

Offering reach and refined focusing performance, the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR from Nikon is a telephoto zoom covering a comfortable portrait-length to telephoto range. One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design, which aids in reducing chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color fidelity. A Super Integrated Coating, too, helps to achieve accurate colors by controlling flare and ghosting when working in bright and backlit conditions. Noteworthy for this lens is the AF-P designation, which indicates the use of a pulse stepping motor that offers notably quiet, fast, and precise autofocus performance to benefit both stills and video applications. Additionally, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for up to 4.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 105-450mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
AF-P pulse motor uses stepping motors to deliver impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Reviews

Very Happy Customer

I recently purchased the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm lens for my Nikon D810 as I do a lot of hiking (and occasional street photography) and have missed many opportunities to capture wildlife or other shots simply by being too far away. I lamented for a while since most good zoom lenses are priced out of my budget range. When I realized this lens was not only something I could afford but also had great reviews, I jumped at buying it! I am so glad I did. I have only had it for a couple of weeks and have not yet taken it out for a proper workout. But I have used it in a few situations already and am very pleased by the quality of image it produces. So far, I have not found any fault with it at all. Everything is sharp and clear. So far, extending it all the way out to 300mm has not resulted in any distortions or aberration . It is very light, which is nice. I also find the VR is quite good when extending the zoom. Overall, I am plenty happy with this purchase! I am excited to get out on the hiking trail very soon to really give this baby a proper initiation, but I have every confidence already that I will not lose any opportunities that I had missed before!

Pretty satisfied pairing with a Z6

I'm a hobbyist doing some birding, and bought it with the FTZ adaptor since the Z6 doesn't have a lot of lenses yet. I'd say the autofocus is slightly slower than with my Z6 kit lens (28-70mm). It sometimes struggles at 300mm, but it seems to be happening in low light situations, and it still finds focus after a couple of seconds. Of course, its not awesome for low light, but its manageable using a higher ISO. In the forest, I usually manage 1/125 at ISO500. I'd say its a more than acceptable beginners wildlife lens.

Lens has nice build quality it is sharp,Accurate Silent Fast focus and light weight. The only negative I Found is the Lens hood though it lock in place it is not very tight it fell off several times just taking in and out of the camera back I really wish it would twist lock more snug.

I got this lens to replace a 28-300 Nikkor lens and I like the results from this 70-300 much better. Focus is super fast on my D750. Price was competitive and delivery was fast and on the day stated.

This will sound strange but I hadn't bought a new lens for my D7500 in quite a while, rented a few for special occasions but never bought. When this lens came I thought there was a problem with it since it was extremely tight trying to put it on. Even called the help line but no one offered that opinion. Took it to my daughter who has the same camera and she popped it on, admitting it was tight but that's the way new lenses are. I used it to photograph a horse jumping show over the 4th and am very pleased with the reach and fast focus. I especially like the option of the sport selector on the lens. Im glad I tested it with her camera and didn't return it. It is definitely a big improvement over the kit lens the camera came with.

My wife and I traded in old 55 - 300mm Nikon lenses for these. They are a huge improvement over the old lenses. Seems faster to focus and nicer colors. Very Happy.

The AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR is compatible w/ the DX format, correct? How does the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR compare to the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lens that comes with the D3500 2 lens kit? Is it worth the upgrade? Primarily used for outdoor sports photography
Asked by: Eddie
I suggest you read Thom Hogan’s review of the lens. http://www.bythom.com/camera-lens-and-accessory/nikon-and-third-party-lens.html#.XTNwyy3Myl4 I have had the 70-300 4.5- 5.6 ED VR for a year now and yes it is worth the upgrade. At 300mm you are going to want that VR feature. The lens will work with both the FX and DX formats and I use it on both. Be sure your DX camera can support the AF-P lenses. Still, the D3500 with the two lenses is a bargain, just be sure you know what you will be giving up. Look at Thom Hogans review of these lenses.

Will the auto focus work for my d300

Will the auto focus work for my d300
Asked by: Bryson
it works great on my d7200 and my d5200. I do mot know much about the d300. I think the d300 is a full frame nikon. The drive motor for focus is in the lens. Sorry i cannot help more than this. This lens is a full frame lens. I use rhe sweet spot of the lens since my d7200 is not full frame. Lens on D7200 seems to focus a tiny bit slower than a kit lens similar but I am a pro shooter of school sports and expect a lot out of my gear. I got this lens because my next body will be full frame.
