Vello LA-NEX-LM-M overview

  • 1Description

Make the most of your existing Leica M lenses with this Vello Lens Adapter with Macro that not only allows you to use the lenses on a Sony E-mount camera, but also provides additional close-up focusing capabilities. This feature is provided through the use of an integrated macro focusing helicoid that increases the lens-to-sensor distance and effectively reduces your minimum focusing distance. You can also retract the helicoid to obtain infinity focus capabilities. Additionally, the adapter is made from a durable zinc alloy and features a matte black finish on the inside to reduce the potential for glare and reflections that can negatively impact image quality.

Although the lens will fit physically, autofocus, automatic diaphragm (AE metering), and other functions dependent on communication between camera body and lens will be disrupted by the lens adapter. You will need to focus manually, and to set exposures manually or meter in aperture priority (stop-down) mode. If the lens does not have a manual aperture collar, the aperture will be stopped down to its smallest f/stop. Focusing to infinity is retained.

This adapter enables the use of Leica M lenses on Sony E-mount cameras, meaning you can now use your existing stable of lenses on your current camera. It is also very secure, holding the lens in place without any wobble sometimes associated with the adapting process.
The macro function of this adapter provides a focusing helicoid that will increase the lens-to-sensor distance, allowing for closer focusing than normally allowed by the lens itself. This means you can now get macro performance without needing to switch to a specialized lens and you will retain all the normal benefits of your optic when the macro function is not in use.
Thanks to precise manufacturing, this adapter is guaranteed to provide infinity focus by placing the lens at the correct distance from the sensor. This allows you to make the most of your lenses and doesn't limit you from shooting distant subjects.
Made from a durable zinc alloy, this adapter will withstand many uses and won't wear or break in the way soft brass or cheap plastic would. Also, an internal matte black finish reduces reflections and glare, ensuring your images look sharp and contrasty.

    Vello LA-NEX-LM-M reviews

Leica M Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Lens Adapter with Macro is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fine at $30, not worth $70 I have other LM to E adapters, including the Novoflex, but this allows much closer focusing for the Leica M mount. In that, it's fine, the normal minimum focus of the 40/2 Rokkor-M is 30", with the adapter it is reduced to 9". That makes it worth the sale price of $29.95. However, there are a number of other issues. First, the B&H add states it will focus at infinity. In practice, it goes beyond infinity and you have to turn back and check to make sure it's actually at infinity. For many situations that's fine, but much more difficult in dark sky conditions where you just want to push it to infinity, not try to focus on a star. The focus ring for the helicoid is very large, and easy to grip. However, it's so large that it covers the lens release button. You have to reach under the ring to release a lens. It would have worked just as well if it had a smaller diameter, something I would have expected an engineer to discover before release. The helicoid relies on lubricant and makes a rasping noise as you focus, something the in-camera microphones pick up in video. There is also a bit of play when extended, not a problem with the 40/2. However, the 90/2.8 tele-elmarit is heavier so the plane of focus might not be flat when fully extended to minimum focus. There are two other close-focusing alternatives, the Voightlander at $309 and Fotodiox at $109. So at $70 this is the least expensive, so some compromises can be expected. But if I had paid $70, it would be going back. At $30 it is effective as a variable extension tube, and I have the better made Novoflex when I don't need close-focus.
