The Ultra Plate Camera Support also has three countersunk holes to drive nails into a wooden surface and permanently attach the platform for special applications. Additionally, there are three open spaces that the included carabiner can clip into for attaching to a belt or bag. Another means of carrying the Ultra is by running an accessory belt or backpack strap through the slotted belt loops. Meanwhile, the slotted belt loops can also accommodate the 20" cinch strap, so it can attach onto a tree or pole and shoot from an elevated height.

solid support

The Platypod Ultra is a solid base that combined with an appropriate ball head can be used to support small and medium size SLRs. I combined it with an Oben BE-108 ballhead, for panarama uses, and it very stably supports a Nikon Z7 with 24-120mm zoom. I look forward to using this combination on travel overseas, so as not to carry a tripod.

Really solid tool for photography...

This is a great camera support. Its flexibility is really pretty slick. I can use it to support my camera or external lights. It fits in any camera bag very easily. The only downside is having to screw in the support feet... but really that's a nitpick. This is built so well, I pre-ordered the new extreme.

A tripod base like this can be useful. However, there are many similar products that cost much less. The complaint against this is that the bolt cannot be removed. That means you have an exposed bolt to deal with, which can rip your bad. It also means this plate it not as thin as you might think it should be. I have a competing product with a bolt that is removable that costs less and works as welll - and there's no risk of cutting my bag or my hands.

The Ultra plate is an excellent tool but if you are using full size DSLR or gripped mirrorless cameras I'd go with the bigger size.

I'm happy with this purchase. It does a nice job of supporting my Nikon Z6 with 24-70 f4 and 70-200 f2.8 lenses. It's a lot lighter than I was expecting. It's been a good solution for places where a tripod isn't allowed. I reached out to the company to ask a question and was very impressed with how quickly I heard back from them ... in fact, they called me within a few hours to talk about it. Some people are concerned about the permanently mounted stud (for screwing on the tripod head) cutting up their camera bag. I get that the included rubber cover will probably be quickly lost. My solution is to put the fabric case that holds the 4 feet over the stud and use the included strap to secure the case to the plate.

I use both the MAX and the Ultra. While your setup will work with the Ultra, I would recommend the Max for better, more stable support. In either case, make sure you are stabilized in such a way that the unit does not wobble or tip over.

question

Regarding the spikes: what if you want to use the spikes on a surface likely to be scratched? Do the spikes come with rubber tips for protection? If not, what do you suggest to keep tips from scratching? Thanks.
Asked by: Joan
Yes there are rubber tips and the spikes are reversible - can be used rubber or pointed metal side down

question

Is the small Ultra large enough for the Fuji XT2 and lenses or would it be better to have the larger model?
Asked by: Karen L.
Depends how big your lenses are. If you're planning to upgrade camera/lenses better off going bigger plate. I only use ultra for my phone for quick setup recording.
