AKG N Series overview

  • 1Description

Designed for lovers of high-res audio, the AKG N40 earphones provide a hybrid-driver design to ensure a frequency response of 10 Hz to 40 kHz, making them suitable for use with DSD devices. Dynamic bass drivers are employed to offer low distortion, even at high volumes, while the balanced-armature drivers are tailored to give you an accurate, clear midrange and high-end. The timbre of the headphones can be further tailored with physical filters that you can place into the earbud itself.

The N40's ear tips are rounded and feature a behind-the-ear construction to ensure comfortability over prolonged listening experiences. Two detachable cables are provided, both made of stainless steel and rubber for a blend of durability and comfort. Tangle-free by design, one cable provides an in-line remote and microphone, giving you three-button control over phone calls, volume, and audio playback. With the flick of a switch, you can direct the remote to work with iOS or Android devices. The other cable does not feature a remote. Other in-box goodies abound, such as four pairs of ear sleeves, a flight adapter, cleaning tool, and carrying pouch.

    AKG N Series reviews

N40 High-Resolution, In-Ear Headphones with Customizable Sound (Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional These are a stunning earphone without a doubt. Right out of the box with an hour or so of run in time they produce a smooth and detailed sound, namely in combination with a decent DAC (AQ Dragonfly Red makes them sing so sweetly), and they are very comfortable. The only con I would say is that the cable it a bit too short - a few more inches at least would make a big difference. Hopefully some replacements/options will be available as accessories at some point in the near future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm and accurate I bought the N40 a couple months ago and have time to really break them in. The highs are clear but not taxing, mids are warm and robust, and the low ends definitely can produce but are not overwhelming. They have an overall very pleasant frequency response. They aren't made for reference but enjoying Hi-Res music and being immersed. However, they really shine with a good DAP and Amp. They really shine with a good DAP and Amp. I use a fiiox5 gen 3 with them. The one flaw I've had is the original cable, without the controls, have malfuntioned on the right side causing and intermittent connection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Detailed, Great buy I am very happy with the n40. Resolution is great across the entire frequency, but a good source is paramount. This is a case of "garbage in garbage out" You can listen to your phone through the N40, but these are for more serious listening. You benefit from a high resolution player and amp, or an external DAC

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good sound quality but the inbox cable is not good The sound is amazing. It have clear backgrond sound and the sound stage is pretty good. If you upgrade the cable it's sound quality are improve a lots because the in-box cables are not good at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just WOW! I bought it few weeks ago. After break in and a new pair of ear foam (for better comfort and noise isolation) they sound Amazing. Base is tight, a lot of detail but less sound stage than my AKG 702. One of the best earbuds you can buy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good earphones but have to pair with decent dac I own these pair for about 1 month and I love them. Treble is bright and clear but not harsh, Mid is detailed, vocal is a little bit foward, Bass is compact yet powerful and SoundStage is a bit wilder than common In-ear. But to get the best of them you need a decent dac (I use dragonfly red) the sound is not so good when played directly from phone or PC.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from custom sounds? why would anyone need custom sound mod's- I seriously don't understand this? Studios cost in the millions, MIxed on wire flat speakers! Then mastered on some of the best speakers on the planet, so just make a wire flat speaker or close to, so you hear exactly what was produced.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Sound Quality, Weakness in Cable Connection I am happy about the sound quality of these headphones. However, there is a weakness in the connection of the cable to the buds that frequently disturbs the sound if one is moving. This is even true for the second pair I received after sending my first pair in for this reason. Therefore, this is likely a weakness in the structure of the headphones and not a unique case.
