SAFETY FIRST: Observing the Sun without the proper protection may result in serious personal injury, including permanent eye damage and blindness, and/or damage to equipment. Never point an optic at the sun without an approved solar filter on the front of the optic. For direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder, ensure your filter is ISO 12312-2 (also written as ISO 12312-2:2015) certified. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder.

Coronado's iconic PST 40mm f/10 1.0Å H-Alpha Personal Solar Telescope optical system is tuned to the hydrogen-alpha bandwidth with a broad 1Å (Angstrom) bandpass for viewing details of the Sun's chromosphere (surface) and prominences, as well as filaments. A bandpass tuner allows users to compensate for Doppler shift or to highlight specific areas or zones.

It is designed and engineered to be set up quickly and used easily. For simplicity, the 30mm etalon and rear blocking filters are set internally, so all users need do is mount the OTA on a stable platform and drop in the included 20mm eyepiece. The PST is offered here without a mount or tripod, but it is equipped with a standard 1/4"-20 tripod mount for using conventional photo/video/field tripods, or it can be mounted on many alt-az, EQ, or motorized astronomical mounts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A WOW moment for an old amature I've been a nighttime amateur astronomer and telescope builder for over 50 years. I occasionally projected the sun onto paper to observe something interesting like the Venus transit. But when a friend allowed me to look at the Sun through his PST I was overwhelmed. Seeing prominences, flares, filaments, plaque and other features through the eyepiece is very different from looking at photos. This is a great little telescope that any serious amateur should have. Perhaps it is not adequate for serious photography or science but well worth the affordable price to see our star in , quite literally, an entirely new light.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Over hyped One might think that there are endless features to see in a given viewing time. Ufortunately, with the 40mm lens, with the 20 mm optic gives a nice view of teentire sun, but little elxe. If careful, one can indeed see some features, but they are extremely small - at least for me they were. I purchased this item with just the single filter. Perhaps with the second filter, one would see more, but again, the size of the features woud be just above invisibility. Even with a 12 mm optic, features were not greatly improved. On the plus side, the sighting mechanism allows for far easier location of the sun than other comments led me to believe. As an entry levelscope, it is fine, but that is about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The litle scope that could.... had always regarded the PST as a small curiosity, something that despite its narrow spectral window that would allow observing prominences, filaments and the such, its small diameter would highly compromise the final results (it is 40 mm after all). The use of one gave me a completely different concept of this Little, effordable H Alpha scope. It rocks. With EPs of smaller focal lenght (6mm) The filaments are contrasted and very clear, prominences, even elongated faint ones were a stunning sight. It is the best choice one could make within a reasonable Budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fo the Money The Coronado PST is a terrific H-Alpha solar telescope for the money. Prominences and flares, along with some surface detail is all visible. The unit is small, lightweight, and highly portable. It can be easily mounted on a small equatorial or alt-az mount, or a sturdy photography tripod and head. Yes, the 40mm aperture limits the amount of detail that can be observed. However, the larger aperture H-Alpha telescopes also cost considerable more, and some add-on filters even cost 2x as much or more. So you get what you pay for, and for the price, the PST delivers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent H-alpha Solar Telescope This telescope provides excellent views of the Sun and its features. Given it is the low-end of the Coronado line of solar telescopes, it's performance is amazingly excellent. It is also very easy to use. The only cons for this telescope are: 1) It is very small and light so it tends to wobble a bit while focusing and tuning which can make it annoying to do either. Additionally, significant wind can also cause wobbling even when not focusing and tuning. Given a good mount, this effect can be reduced quite a bit. 2) The 20mm eyepiece that comes with it is adequate, but not the ideal eyepice for this telescope. Meade makes a 12mm eyepiece for their Coronado line that is superb for this scope. They don't need to include the 12mm eyepiece, but I wish they had bundled a better eyepiece with this scope. Even their 18mm eyepiece is significantly better than the 20mm that comes with it. Overall, I think this is an excellent scope for looking at the Sun. If you are just interested in being able to sneak a peek every once in a while, this is the right scope for you. If you are serious about studying the sun, you may want to consider one of their higher-end Coronado series scopes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent first time solar scope I received the Coronado PST as a gift from my wife. I was blown away by the initial viewing of the sun. Solid flares are easy to view and filaments can be seen. Given my experience with visible light telescopes, I purchased an inexpensive CCD Camera specifically for astro viewing. This increased the Coronado PST's abilities 100 fold. The Sun's disc now displayed wonderful detailed features. I would recommend this scope for beginners due to price and portability. Remember, no ground based image will look like those taken by NASA probes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic 6 out of 5 stars I ordered this PST as a Christmas present for myself. B&H shipped earlier than expected and unit arrived ahead of schedule. When I finally got to use the scope on CHristmas day, I was floored by what I saw. After teaching myself how to focus and tune the PST I had a view of the sun that I never thought I would ever have.Loops and filaments dancing out to the sides and at a different point whorls and eddies of light and dark covering the surface. That first view will stay with me for the rest of my life.
