Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 Overview

Offering a super wide field of view along with an autofocus design, the AF 14mm f/2.8 FE from Samyang is a prime wide-angle lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Its relatively fast f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions, and its optical design incorporates three aspherical and two low dispersion elements to help reduce distortion and color fringing for improved clarity and sharpness. Additionally, the lens' autofocus motor provides quick and precise focusing performance, and manual focus override is also available for more refined control.

Super wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 21mm equivalent focal length.
Three aspherical elements are incorporated in the optical design to control spherical aberrations for increased clarity and resolution from edge to edge.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and a neutral color balance.
The integrated autofocus motor provides quick, accurate, and precise AF control. Manual focus override is also available for refining your focus position.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 Reviews

Great lens and price!

I have been using this lens for over a year and I'm really happy with it. I use it in a EOS R with an adapter and work great. It's really sharp, I mostly use for weddings (reception and party). I'm very pleasant with all the info I get in 14mm, if you know how angle to use the distortion is not going to be a problem. I can recommend it enough!

Pros and cons...

First pros: Less smearing at edges than my Rokinon 14mm (also for Nikon) and less distortion with less complexity. Cons: Lots of vignetting, exposure inconsistencies, and no focus distance markers or aperture markers make life out in the field especially difficult under low light applications. Pretty much impossible to manually focus with Nikon D610 and D750, so best to activate and use back-of-camera focus button which, however, is a pain when using a tripod, having to either move around focus points or the camera itself, which are both a pain...

Sharp, Lightweight, and Nice AF

I'm a big fan of this lens and focal length. I like the dramatic potential and way it makes me think creatively. I like that it's sharp, lightweight, and has AF. I tried to shoot it at f8 mostly, but also felt it did a nice job at F2.8 when I was shooting star points. It is focus by wire so there was a little back and forth getting it to manual focus on star points but it didn't bother me. The old version of Lightroom 6 that I use doesn't have a specific lens profile for this lens but it suggested my photos with the lens had a lens correction embedded from the camera (Sony A7r IV). Overall, I'd buy it again. In fact, I liked this Samyang Lens Series so much that I also bought the Samyang 35mm, 45mm, and 75mm, including the Docking Station, all for Sony. I connected my copy of the 14mm to the Docking Station and it didn't need any firmware updates or adjustments.

Hopefully a star

I purchased this lens for star/sky images but it has been overcast since I got the lens so I can't comment on star imaging. Backyard test images were very good. The lens is solidly built, fits the Canon 80D body well, and balances nicely. The autofocus works very well, handles the edges without distortion or bending in. The lens syncs nicely with the auto features of the body. I ran the focus on a test triangle and it was spot on, no micro adjustment needed.

If you look to shoot wide at fair budget, this is the Len for you. Good build quality. Enjoy...

Decent compromise

I own three Sony and Tamron lenses for my Sony A7R IV and have been very happy with them--which made me a bit reluctant to go for a brand that, frankly, I had not heard about previously. What persuaded me was the huge price differential between the Samyang and the next candidate I considered, a similar Sigma lens (never mind the way more expensive alternatives). Overall this is a sharp lens and feels well-made. Why the three-star rating, then? Because I am not happy with the way autofocusing works on this lens. It's slow--ok we are talking fractions of a second slower that my other lenses, but still... It's also a bit clunky. When I look through the viewfinder, I first see an out-of-focus field then, after a tick or two, the in-focus version. I know, this lens is not going to be used to photograph horse races or birds in flight. But if you are used to the instant focusing ability of higher-priced lenses, getting used to Samyang's more leisurely way of focusing may take a while.

AF has issues

This is model available for the RF mount. Shame I couldn't have got the MF only. MF only not to be found. So, AF does not work for this lens. I will exchange to determine if I have same issues. Single point AF doesn't come alive without some real gymnastics with control button. Shutting off the camera and you start all over getting single point AF restored to where you want the focus point. Lens has amnesia. Didn't get farther because if single point AF does not work, why bother.

Asked by: Trung
I have this lens and no information from the manufacturer answers this question. The manual says "Do not wet the lens or touch the lens with a wet hand when using the lens near water. Doing so may result in fire or electric shock." I've used this lens in dusty conditions and have not experienced any issues. I've not used it in any wet conditions.

This is an automatic lens that is a bit wider at 14mm, while being slower at F/2.8. BH #VE1520SFE is a fully manual lens that is not as wide at 15mm, but faster at F/2. https://bhpho.to/2JAZ2Zc
