Genaray SpectroLED 14 overview

  • 1Description

With a beam angle of 120°, the SpectroLED-14 Flood Light from Genaray is composed of a daylight-balanced fixture equipped with 600 LEDs. The round 14.5" light provides 10-100% dimming with a maximum power output of 120W, featuring a high CRI rating of 96 that helps ensure color accuracy regardless of your subject or dimming settings.

In a field dominated by rectangular or square arrays, Genaray has made the wise choice of making their studio lights circular. Not only does the increased surface area have more wrap-around light characteristics but the shape renders pleasing, natural-looking catchlights in your subject's eyes. And if you're doing portraiture, you can soften the SpectroLED-14's output by slipping the included 3/4 stop diffusion sock over the reflector or with an optional Octa softbox that is specifically designed for this product. Heat is never a concern since the cool-running LEDs are barely warm to the touch.

Another way to soften the quality of light is to use the umbrella socket that is built into the mount. You can use reflective or translucent umbrellas for bounce or shoot-through effects. The socket accepts 7 or 8 mm shafts and the mount has a 65-degree tilting range for perfect placement.

Power is provided by an included multi-voltage power supply and adapter that accepts 100-240 VAC. You can also choose to power the light with an optional V-mount battery or three-stud batteries thanks to a D-tap slot in the back of the fixture. Also located at the back is a dimming knob for on-board control, complete with an LED readout for the brightness. The light mounts to any compatible 5/8" baby pin stand and can be paired with an optional Genaray MB-WRT remote for easy wireless operation.

  • Round, 14.5" LED fixture with daylight color temperature of 5600K and high CRI of 96
  • Wide beam angle of 120° allows the light to pair with an optional Octa softbox for soft and even illumination
  • Accepts an included 3/4 diffusion sock that goes over the reflector and optional umbrellas via a dedicated socket
  • Can be dimmed from 10 to 100% with on-board control knob, complete with LED readout for viewing brightness setting
  • Wireless dimming possible with optional Genaray MB-WRT remote
  • Runs on 100-240 VAC power with included adapter, or on optional batteries via D-tap connection
  • Mounts to any compatible light stand with standard 5/8" baby pin

    Genaray SpectroLED 14 reviews

SpectroLED-14 Flood LED Light is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light for portraits and beauty This is a really interesting light. The LED array is round and you get a round reflection or catch light without having to further modify the light. Add the diffusion sock, or even better, the 31" octa with 2 levels of diffusion and you get a super even, really beautiful, soft light source that is fantastic for portraits and beauty. The idea of a 14" flood that allows you to add a 31"octabox is very cool. Output and color are very stable. Controls are simple and straight forward. If you've got the light up on a boom, you can even control the output remotely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A versitile beauty-dish with punch Ive used this and its predecessor on dozens of shoots and its never let me down. Ive used them for beauty photography as a key, both bare and with the octabox, as well as an interview key. It has a lovely circular highlight in the eye that 1x1 light panels cant compare with. It is also almost indestructible - Ive had them fall a couple of times from a 6 light stand and not even turn off.  Now that Generay has updated this light to make it brighter and remote controlled, it will key tool in my lighting kit for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact and Powerful! + accessory options! I was pleasantly surprised by this light. The output seems way brighter than my other lights rated at similar specs. I believe its a combination of the way the LED's are placed flat without being incased in a bulb and the fact that this light has a super wide beam angle (maybe flat diodes is how you even get a wide beam angle idk). Its not just wide but its powerfulI. Even though its usable bare, LED's are harsh by nature so I would recommend to always use the included diffusion. It becomes a softer light without losing too much power. If its still to harsh for your subject you can also feather the light off to the side. If you want the best solution they offer a 31 inch Octabox. Search Genaray Octa Softbox for SpecroLED-14 Flood Light. At first glance you may not even know it can take a modifier. This really softens the light up. You can actually soften it in a few different ways by leaving the included diffusion on or off with the modifier attached. If your like me and have been using foldable stye modifiers then you may not like having to manually put together the Octabox. Its not a deal breaker its just something to keep in mind. If you need to shoot a one person set up and like to shoot wide open you can easily accomplish that while only having the light at its minimal output of 10% at a reasonable distance with a low ISO and one layer of diffusion. This is daylight balanced only so you get to utilize all of the LED's. I am so used to using bi-color light sources now that I am never able to utilize all the LED's on my current panels in daylight. The build is solid and lightweight. The cord has a power brick attached but I like how the power cord itself is super long. It has a screw in type of plug for the light so you do not have to worry about accidentally knocking it out. It is a super simple light to use with great light output and color accuracy/CRI. I found it to be within 100 kelvin of what it is rated at with a Color Checker. This is definitely a nice pick up. Its just the rights size for portability while still having good output. I also found out in the manual that you can get a wireless remote too. It was hard for me to find at first but search Genaray mb-wrt. It has some options that are for other models they sell but for this light it turns it off/on (must turn on power switch on light first) and adjust the power up and down. Bottom line is this light is good. With the accessories this light is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Light is ideal for when I go on location. I own a few Genaray lights, including the SpectroLED SP-S-1000D Daylight Studio LED. Due to a number of its features, the SP-AD120 SpectroLED-14 LED Light is ideal for when I go on location. I really like the circular LED fixture shape, compact size and relatively light weight (3.95 lb. or 1.8 kg) of the product. The light output is extremely bright for its size and weight (6800 lux at 3 ft (0.9 m)), and the CRI and TLCI are very high, at 96 and 92 respectively. I also like that it comes with a diffusion sock that does a great job in softening the shadows in portraits. And I really like that I can insert a shoot through umbrella (or even a standard umbrella if I want to cut the light down a lot) through the center area of the LED array, though I found that the end of the shaft will need to be "whittled down" a bit depending on the diameter of the shaft. So far, I've only used the light for stills, and I found skin tones and overall color to be very pleasing. There are no tungsten (orange) filters included in the box, so I plan to bring gels or maybe use the acrylic tungsten filter from my SpectroLED SP-S-1000D light kit when I need to convert to tungsten-balanced light. Absent from the box is a carrying case (a big omission in my opinion). However, the product comes with sturdy foam protective packaging that fits the product perfectly. I ended up using that (with the LEDs face down) to help protect the fixture. I added a little gaffer tape to some areas to provide some extra strength. The digital readout on the back of the unit is bright and has been easy for me to see from about 10 feet away. The wireless remote control is very well designed and easy to use, and I like that I can use multiple lights, sync them using the remote, and then control them with a few presses of the remote. I also like that the remote takes AAA batteries, and that they are easy to change, without the need for a screwdriver to open the back. I have only used AC power so far, but it's good to know that I can use a 12V battery with it like the Bescor Li-Ion rechargeable battery system (B&H product code is BEFP12VATM). I would, however, prefer to have the option to use more common Sony NP-F series (or compatible) batteries with the light. The power cable length of just over 13 ft (4 m), is also very welcome. All in all, I'm very happy with the light.
