I want to mount a clamp directly to this, i.e. no ball head. Does the 3/8" stud rotate so I can orient the clamp to any direction?
No, the stud is solid in place.

question
I am an amateur astronomer with many years of experience. I plan to mount my 10 pound astronomy binoculars 20x80 on a Manfrotto counterbalanced nitrogen fluid Head. I think this Will be adequate for my purposes. For my limited uses, is there any reason why I should buy a Platypod camera support? From the material presented about the Platypod I do not believe there is any compelling reason to acquire a Platypod. Please let me know if there is some advantage that I am overlooking. With appreciation for any help you may be able to offer,JP Smith
I bought one and have only used it once. Thought I would use to place camera on ground for wider angle shots of nightskies but I never have

question
Is the Ultra stable enough to support a D750 with a 24-120mm lens ?
I have used a Canon 5DSR Camera with 100-400mm lens without problems. You need a sturdy tripod head. That is the weakest link.
