Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Overview

Characterized by its close-focusing and perspective control capabilities, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro from Canon is a normal-length tilt-shift lens well-suited for product, tabletop, architectural, and interior photography. Up to +/- 8.5° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 12mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for more stability. A minimum focus distance of 10.6" and a maximum magnification of 0.5x are also benefitted by the range of movements for more control over depth of field when photographing close-up subjects.

Complementing the operation of the lens, this L-series prime is also distinguished by its optical design that features a pair of Ultra-Low Dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations as well as one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion. Individual elements also feature both Air Sphere and Subwavelength Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 12mm of shift and +/- 8.5° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° in any direction for applying the movements in distinct directions.
Tilt-locking mechanism and a large tilt knob benefit operation and ensure the lens stays in place while shooting.
Two ultra-low dispersion elements help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element minimizes spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness.
Both Air Sphere and Subwavelength Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.
A minimum focusing distance of 10.6" along with a maximum magnification of 0.5x benefits working with close-up subjects.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Reviews

Absolutely Stellar!

This Lens Just FEELS Like Quality When You Hold It In Your Hands. The Focus Ring Is Smooth But Firm, So It Won't Easily Be Nudged Off Focus. The Tilt-shift Controls Are Firm As Well. And This Lens Is Razor Sharp. Oh, And Extra Bonus Is The 1:2 Macro Focusing Ability.

Miles better than the 45mm TS-E!

After extensive side-by-side evaluation, as much as I wanted to be ok with the 45mm TS-E, the 50mm was just so much better I couldn't be ok with the older design. In addition to being *much* sharper, it has virtually zero chromatic aberration, better color rendering and no distortion-all issues with the 45mm lens. The 45mm also has some bad flaring issues that crop up, especially at night with light sources near the corners of the frame. In fact, 50mm TS-E resolves better than any other L-series lens I own, including my RF 24-70, & the 24mm and 17mm EF TS-E lenses. It practically embarrasses the 24mm TS-E and definitely makes me anxious for an update to that lens. I use it adapted to the EOS R5. My only complaints with this lens are of no fault of its own-50mm is a tough focal length for architectural photography, and the macro magnification isn't enough to scan film with. Despite those very personal complaints I still love this lens and relish any chance to bust it out.

question

I'm assuming that with the EF 25 extension, this lens will produce 1:1?
Asked by: John
Yes, if you use the Canon EF 25 II Extension Tube with the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens, the lens would become a 1x macro lens with a 1:1 reproduction ration and a minimum focus distance of approximately 7.9 inches. However, do note that you will lose infinity focus when using the Canon EF 25 II Extension Tube on the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens.

Can this take advantage of the High-Speed Continuo

Can this take advantage of the High-Speed Continuous + (12fps) on the R5 with the ef-r canon adapter?
Asked by: Jeremy
No, the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens cannot take advantage of the High-Speed Continuous + (12 fps) mode on the Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Camera. While it is fully compatible with the R5 via the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, its mechanical design prevents it from reaching the maximum burst rate.

how would you focus this lens with a Canon 5D Mark iv as the camera does not have interchangeable focusing screens?
Asked by: Jui Hsiang
With the 5D IV you could use Live View with magnification to assist with focusing the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens and you could also use a Loupe on the LCD screen. On the newer R series cameras focus peaking is helpful if you use this lens plus an R adapter like the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R B&H # CAMAEFRF.

When using an adapter for R mirrorless cameras do the lenses work the same as with a DSLR camera in terms of sharpness, lens movements and metering?
Asked by: Andres
If you purchase the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R for use with the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens, the lens will have the same performance as when used on a DSLR camera, including sharpness, lens movements, and exposure metering.
