    Pelican 1654 reviews

1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Yellow and Black Divider Set (Desert Tan) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 97.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised If you have $ in camera gear you want to take in a canoe island hopping off the coast of Maine this is cheap insurance. Using it as a dry bag for cloths etc. can be problematic when they get wet.I do recommend you do not load one to the point where it sinks. it is likely not a problem for a big case but there is a sob story or two about expensive gear getting sunk deep...Also you need to pack the pockets completely (If you plan to give your gear a delay beating like I do) so I get packing foam out of the trash at work and cut it with a hot wire. Rattling = busted stuff. If this is what you plan to do them this is the case you need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy but I am loving it. I use the 1650 now as my studio in a box for location work. It's the size of an international suitcase. I considered getting two smaller pelicans versus one big one but in the end went for the simplicity of one generous case. There is something satisfying about opening up the case and hearing the air lock release. If you have done your research you will know that Pelican's are indestructible but the pay off is the weight. A price you have to pay for the durability and the air/water/dust tight seal. The wheels are solid under the weight of a loaded case. I have dragged it across rocks, gravel and just yesterday through a cow paddock with uneven ground, dirt and grass. I avoided any 'cow pucks', thank goodness. It's a good feeling knowing that everything inside is protected from dust! I used to carry 2 camera bags, 1 utility bin and I attached it all with bunji cords to a dolly. Wrestling through bags and the bin was time consuming and no matter how well I organised things ahead of time, things soon fell into chaos. I love opening the case and seeing everything I need and might need in clear view. Everything has a place and it's a no-brainer to drop back into place when shuffling and changing out gear. Regrets: I waited so long to get one. Cons: I am a woman and so the weight is a bit of a challenge but I needed a good excuse to build upper body strength!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One BIG Case I bought this case to store most of my Nikon equipment--three camera bodies, 300mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 200mm f/4 micro, 135mm f/2 DC, 16-35mm f/4, 24-70mm f/2.8, 28-300mm, 50mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.8, 24mm, 35mm DX, 16-85mm DX, Tokina 11-16mm DX, assorts cords, chargers, batteries, filters--you get the picture. With the lid organizer, this case has become home base. Since I rarely carry all this equipment when I travel, I don't use this case for transport (except b/w residences). I have other more portable solutions. But if you need to pack for travel, this case willl certainly do the job. Hey, it's a Pelican.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Beast! This case is a total beast. It weighs over 30 pounds EMPTY! This might bother me if it was not for the fact that I am using it to store about 3k in radio triggers and White Lighting mono heads. I feel good knowing they are protected by this case. The wheels+handles are well placed and easy to use. My only complaint is I would like a couple more of the longer/thicker dividers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the best. The best, simple as that. I have Pelican cases from when I was in the service and not a drop of water or speck of sand entereed. So, I knew this case was going to be nothing but perfect. All my photogear fits, with extra room for whatever else I want to carry. I would highly recommend these cases to anyone. The padded insert is easy to adjust (I learned from my last case to use plain paper, slide the velcro inserts in, and pull the paper out. Works everytime.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 5 star case 2 star dividers You probably already know all the good points about this case so I am only going to mention some of the issues I had with the new 1654. I now have three of these and and the older two have the grey divider sets, they grey (older version) is easier to see your black gear, its fuzzy on all sides so you can configure the compartments/dividers any way you want and the main unit is one piece and fits in the 1650 so much better than the newer grey and had stiffer walls to hold your gear more firm so it was not sliding around. The new black dividers of the new version are a little flimsier, you get less pieces, the black makes it hard to see your gear.... I can deal with all of this but its much harder to configure because the velcro will not attach to each other (most of the pieces are nylon not the fuzz for the velcro) Still a great case and works well with a few big pieces of gear (one of mine houses the 300 and 400 2.8s+ couple of bodies and misc) the other a 600+ bodies and misc) the newest one was for video gear (fs700 and lots of little gadgets, wires, rails and small lenses ect...) and the lack of velcro options on the new one made it pretty tuff and in the end I used one of the older ones for the many small video parts and the new case for the Nikon 600 and bodies. Nice case but I will look for the old grey dividers if I need another one

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great if you have the money This is a great product if you have the money to buy it. I'm using it to store and carry lighting equipment and it works great. There are others that use this for camera bodies and lenses, but this version with dividers isn't to my standards when it comes to the bottom of the box padding, the interchangeable dividers are fine but the bottom of the box isn't padded enough. I would recommend the one with the pluck away foam cubes for that. The only thing I can think of to mention is the weight of the case. Empty it weighs 30 pounds (that's without the divider case). So you have to take this into account if you want to use it to travel by air, because it will only leave you with 20 pounds to use until you reach the 50 pound limit. I would also recommend on looking for practical photos via search engine, in order to gauge the size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from hard core I use this for wedding photography. Needed a sturdy case as opposed to the lowpro stuff and this is a great product. Its a beast. VERY heavy...actually broke my lcd by dropping the camera on the case. its a great buy and very strong. LOUD noises when latching the 7 latches. Be sure to wear protective footwear because this case weighs around 75lbs with all my gear inside and can be dangerous if mishandled or dropped on a foot. Has a rolling handle that bends a little but looks easily replaceable if it breaks. The other handles are strong and the design is smart. This is a very good buy. This one won't make it on a plane but honestly if its packed right, i wouldn't even worry about checking it in.
