Sunwayfoto FB-28i Overview

The Sunwayfoto FB-28i Ball Head with Platypod Ultra Plate Camera Support Kit from B&H Photo is a compact and portable combination of tools that can be placed in the most unorthodox places where ordinary tripods cannot, such as trees, poles, railings, and uneven terrain. Because of its size, the ball head and plate make an ideal pair for camera support.

Sunwayfoto FB-28i Ball Head

The FB-28i Ball Head from Sunwayfoto is a compact and lightweight (7.3 oz) Arca-type compatible tripod head with a load capacity of 13.2 lb. It is CNC machined from aircraft-grade aluminum, making it both lightweight and strong.

The ball head has a large locking knob that controls the movement of the ball, and a separate locking knob to control the panning of the head. A scale is located on the base of the head with an index direction mark for accurate panoramic stitches.

A single notch in the head allows the clamp to be tilted 90° to place your camera in portrait orientation.
An integrated bull's eye bubble level assures your camera is level on both the vertical and horizontal axes.

Platypod Ultra Plate Camera Support

The Ultra Plate Camera Support from Platypod is a 6061-T6 aluminum tripod platform that has a weight capacity of 100 lb and designed for mirrorless or mid-sized cameras. The compact and portable Ultra has a 3/8"-16 male stud for any type of tripod head. Five 3/8"-16 threaded holes can have four stainless-steel spiked feet screwed through the top in any combination to accommodate uneven terrain. Threading through the bottom of the platform utilizes the rubber feet on the opposite side of the spiked feet. Therefore, you're able to place the tripod platform on smooth surfaces and not have the platform slide off or scratch the surface.

The Ultra Plate Camera Support also has three countersunk holes to drive nails into a wooden surface and permanently attach the platform for special applications. Additionally, there are three open spaces that the included carabiner can clip into for attaching to a belt or bag. Another means of carrying the Ultra is by running an accessory belt or backpack strap through the slotted belt loops. Meanwhile, the slotted belt loops can also accommodate the 20" cinch strap, so it can attach onto a tree or pole and shoot from an elevated height.

Sunwayfoto FB-28i Reviews

Pretty good for the money

So, things to be aware of... 1. This does not include the quick release plate for your camera which is needed. I didn't order one because I have three, but none fit this head. 2. It's a small head, so the markings are difficult to read in some conditions. With that said, I haven't actually used it yet, but seems like a great tripod head for a small / lighter camera.

Excellent companion for my little Platypod!

Amazing little ball head. Able to support my Nikon D 800 with a full size 24-70mm 2.8 zoom mounted on a little Platypod stand. Small enough to fit in a little side pocket of my think tank holster bag. Smooth controls. Great price at this quality and I only use ARCA L plates on my equipment. Would definitely recommend!

Great product to upgrade your Manfrotto BeFree travel tripod

I bought this head to modify a Manfrotto Be Free carbon travel tripod and switch out their proprietary quick release head. The head fits perfectly on the tripod and with some adjusting, it can still fit in the Manfrotto tripod bag. Relative to strength and holding power, it easily handles my Nikon D750 with L bracket and Nikon 70-300mm lens without slipping. The build and materials appear to be of high quality. So far, I am very pleased with the upgrade I made to my travel tripod and the 4 stars only reflect that I haven't yet pressure tested it in the field.

Very pleased

I have a reversible compact tripod, the Photoclam PT024. I wanted an Arca-compatible head small enough to fold the legs upward 180. The Sunwayfoto Fb-28i works perfectly for that purpose. The legs fit tightly around it and no space is wasted. It is actually a better fit that the Giotto mini head (non-arca) it replaces and it feels sturdier and smoother, due probably to the larger ball sphere. The only improvement I could think of would be to set the two knobs at 120 to each other, instead of 90. That would give a bit more space to the leg that has to fit in between the knobs.

Great product

Great product. Small and light. Best used for traveling. Stable, if needed.

Subpar, go for Gitzo or RRS

I was excited to try this one, but was disappointed by how sticky the knobs are, how gritty the ballhead feels when rotating and for the cost it's decent, but definitely no replacement for a good Gitzo or RRS ballhead.

I bought one of these heads from B&H based on the reviews here. but I was a bit disappointed at how little this head can actually support.  I would not recommend it for anything heavier than a small P&S camera or perhaps a very small micro four thirds camera like the Olympus Pen series.  It will not hold its position with any stability with an APS-C or full-frame mirrorless camera and a small zoom lens attached.  It will work, but it doesnt inspire much confidence with an expensive piece of gear perched on top. I guess Im going to have to bite the bullet and buy another Arca Swiss P0 head for my lightweight travel and backpacking tripod...

Will this ball head work with the Really Right Stuff L Plate and if so, are there any other accessories I would need to get to enable it to work?

Are the knives also aluminum? My current ball head functions well, but the lock and tension knobs are rubber coated and the rubber now rotates within the groove making it hard to tighten. Looking for all metal if possible.
Asked by: Ryan
The knobs are all metal. METAL \m/. When I opened the package and held it in my hand I almost passed out. This head is awesome. It is a solid piece of workmanship. It works very well. I use it on a carbon fiber tripod with a D810 and it holds its own. The ball is very smooth. You can tighten it up then back it off a little and then adjust your equipment. The tension holds the camera and a zoom just fine while adjusting. The knobs are all metal, no rubber, and have a good grip to them. You do not have to kill it when tightening down. Just snug the knob and it will hold. After you hold this little head in your hand and play with it a little, you will love it.
