3 Legged Thing Billy overview

  • 1Description

With a blue and orange color scheme, this Punks Series Billy Carbon Fiber Tripod with AirHed Neo Ball Head from 3 Legged Thing is a support system that features a tripod with a detachable leg and removable center column, which can be combined to form a monopod with a 32.5 to 67.5" adjustable height. Cameras, lenses, or sport optics that are compatible with a 1/4"-20 mount can be connected to the included QR4 Quick Release Plate, which is secured to the AirHed Neo Ball Head using a quick release clamp. The ball head is removable, provides up to a 90° tilt for portrait orientation, 360° of independent rotation, and can be locked into place along its range of movement.

When configured as a tripod, it supports up to 40 lb and measures 17.7" when folded. Each of its 4-section legs features an independent spread, a 3-position angle lock, and twist locks for rapid deployment. As a tripod, it can be set at a minimum height of 17.7", or 7.8" without its removable, push-and-pull, rapid center column. Together, the three legs can be extended to obtain a maximum height of 55", or 65" when used with the center column fully raised. To further enhance stability on a wide variety of surfaces, each of the carbon fiber legs includes a rubber foot.

For added versatility, the center column is reversible, facilitating low-angle photography where an attached camera is positioned among the tripod's legs instead of above them. A nylon tripod carry bag with a drawstring closure, as well as a microfiber ball head carry bag are included for storage and transport.

    3 Legged Thing Billy reviews

Punks Series Billy Carbon Fiber Tripod with AirHed Neo Ball Head (Blue and Orange) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tripod - Highly Recommended! Product: I bought the 3LT Punks Billy tripod after reviewing, searching, and testing a number of competing tripods. This is my first new tripod purchase since buying a big, aluminum tripod in the late 1970s and things have come a long ways since then. I was looking for a combination of light weight, compact size for hiking, smooth action, and fast setup / teardown. I have been experimenting with HDR and especially wanted excellent rigidity and stability for bracketed photos. I got down to a short list of MeFoto Road Trip, Manfrotto BeFree and 3 Legged Thing. The 3LT products did not show up in many of the 2017 Tripod Reviews I read and I may have first heard about them here on B&H. I'm very happy with my choice and highly recommend the Punks Billy tripod. I elected to spend more to get the carbon fiber legs because every bit of weight adds up on long hikes. It is well made, folds up compact enough for my backpack, operates very smoothly, and has a unique action on the twist-releases to prevent accidental leg collapse. The ball head is smooth and easy to lock. The levels make it easy to correctly set up the tripod. The pan action is very smooth. The tripod legs are quite sturdy. The overall fit and finish are excellent. The included Arca Swiss style quick release plate mounts securely to my Olympus OM-D and attaches very smoothly and quickly to the tripod. I may replace the included plate with a Fusion FPG-1001 plate so I can quickly attach a sling strap when I put the tripod away. I purchased the optional 3LT Stilletoz spiked feet for greater stability in soil, turf or other landscape. These are well machined and are a simple replacement for the included rubber ball feet. The only problem is you need some sort of protective cap for the sharp spikes - I worry about these puncturing my backpack. Customer Support: The unit I received from B&H had an audible and tactile click feel when I released the twist locks on the legs and center column. I contacted 3LT customer support on this issue and their response was FANTASTIC! They said the two-stage release uses internal claw washers, but what I was experiencing was abnormal. I uploaded a video of the release behavior and immediately got authorization to have the unit replaced. I mailed it on a Tuesday and received the replacement unit on Friday morning the same week. 3LT also paid the return postage, depositing the amount directly into my PayPal account. This is exemplary customer support, about the best I've ever experienced with any company. Bottom line - this is an outstanding travel / backpacking/hiking tripod. I would definitely purchase this again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid This is a solid travel tripod. I am a Manfrotto fan, and this 3 Legged Thing Billy tripod is made of more solid materials than the comparable Manfrotto, in my opinion. I recently packed this in my luggage, traveled down to Florida, and enjoyed making long-exposure shots before most everyone else had gotten out of bed. The ball head is sturdy and solid. Based on feel, I expect it to perform well and last a long time. Same for the tripod leg joints. It folds up tightly and is easy to carry. One aspect I don't care as much is the rubber around the circular leg locks and the neck. On a couple of occasions, I found myself twisting the rubber around and not the joint itself. I was able to correct this by gripping the orange metal lock itself or attempting to squeeze the rubber more tightly, but I think it would have been more efficient to make the locks hexagonal rather than round. Net, I'm pleased with the tripod, and hope to take it on many more adventures. It looks sharp, and seems like one of the better options in travel tripods.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well made tripod, ball head is an issue Tripod is well built. Carbon fiber is amazing for traveling, you can unscrew the head to make it even more portable when traveling, and just install it back once you need it. With the head removed, this is smaller than the 3lt Brian and alot more stable too. Folds easily and you can add a peak-design anchor so you can use your peak-design strap for portability. CONS: Head is horrible, i hate the fact that you need to slide the camera in, there is no guard and takes practice to get use to it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from One month of use and the head is threaded Per the title. A beat piece of design and super portable - after extensive research i thought this would be it. I took it on a trip for a single month, I take care of my gear, and already the main head tightener is threaded. Not happy.
