Intel Core i7-8700 overview

  • 1Description

The Intel Core i7-8700 3.2 GHz 6-Core LGA 1151 Processor provides six cores with each one operating between 3.2 and 4.6 GHz for editing digital content, streaming live gameplay, and running other types of intensive tasks. This 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8700 processor is built on Coffee Lake architecture and armed with 12MB of cache memory. The processor is compatible with motherboards that sport an LGA 1151 socket and an Intel 300-series chipset, so the CPU can provide up to sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes for NVMe storage drives, graphics cards, and other high-performance parts. Moreover, it comes with Intel Hyper-Threading technology, which lets each core handle two instruction threads for running multi-threaded applications.

Intel has equipped the Intel Core i7-8700 processor with an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 chipset that outputs up to 4K visuals through your motherboard's DisplayPort and HDMI ports. When connected to a DisplayPort-enabled monitor, the Intel UHD Graphics 630 can produce 4096 x 2304 resolution at 60 Hz. Running under a 4K resolution lets you enjoy ultra high-definition videos as well as view more information onscreen when compared to working in a lower resolution workspace.

Aside from graphics, the Intel Core i7-8700 processor has an average power requirement of 65W and supports DDR4 2666 MHz memory modules, running in a dual- or single-channel configuration. For enterprise and any other data-sensitive environments, it supports Intel vPro, Intel Trusted Execution, and other Intel-based technologies. Furthermore, included along with the Intel Core i7-8700 processor is a fan and heatsink thermal solution for cooling the chip.

    Intel Core i7-8700 reviews

    Core i7-8700 3.2 GHz 6-Core LGA 1151 Processor is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Broken. The side and back pins were bent on the CPU itself, I was hoping it wouldn't be anything too bad and I tried it out just in case to see if it worked - it didn't. (Not sure why, but I figured by some stroke of luck it would have worked. I payed $300+ for it, I wanted to be sure). The pins on the stock cooler were bent as well, not allowing it to be inserted over the CPU and positioned into the motherboard. (I hadn't planned on using the stock cooler, and seeing it all bent up made me realize why). Everything in the box was in some way or another defective, and hopefully they'll allow me to exchange it for a CPU that isn't defective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great CPU, Bad Turbo Still giving this a 5 because this is a great CPU, but unless you are running an amazing cooler I would recommend turning off the turbo setting on it. Its not really needed and will keep the CPU colder. I'm running a lower end water cooler and turning off the turbo saved me 10 to 15 degrees. I wish I would have known about this sooner because I was really getting worried about my CPU temp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome... BUT... I had an i5-7500 and was content, except later I really wished it had hyperthreading. So... after a year... and Ryzen forcing intel to work harder... now we have six-core cpus... WITH hyperthreading... YES~ I was condering i7-8700K but didn't need a cpu to run hard all the time. So I opted for 8700 which goes down to 3.2, which is more efficient for my needs. BUT 12 logical processors is awesome. I'm happy with it, and I have installed on a MSI Z370I, and 3200 gskill ram. So far so good. BUT... spectre and meltdown... and possibly more issues later make me feel I should've waited. So minus 1 star for this issue intell needs to address. My hope is a patch that is proper... OR give me a fixed i7 cpu replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New i7-8700: Great Processor Recently purchased the Intel Core i7-8700 processor from B&H. Service was quick and had the product within a couple days of my order. Just finished installing into a new system and I'm extremely pleased with the processor. Hands down it puts my older Intel i7-860 to shame. Should have upgrade sooner. Pricing at B&H for this product was much better than other sources I checked out. I've been a customer of B&H for some time and will continue to be.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Getting very hot Even with a water cooling this CPU spikes to just below 100c at 100% load. Thermal throttling then kicks in and bring the CPU clock back to about 3700 Mhz. It did require quite some tweaking in the Bios to find the balance between fan speeds, temperatures and performance to sort this out. Also in idle the core clock is all over the place jumping from its minimum to maximum clock speeds for unknown reason. Reading on forums this is normal, I guess this CPU is a thoroughbred race horse. I wonder if it will have a long life?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast CPU The CPU is pretty fast. Best to use it with windows 10. For gaming purposes it works great with an SSD drive and an average video card. The included factory fan is adequate for cooling. There is no need to purchase third party fan. Overall I recommend it for the value, speed and performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING PRICE I was looking for this CPU everywhere and couldn't find it in stock and if I did find it the price was about $50 more. This is the boxed CPU and the best price around

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and Fast. I upgraded my computer with an ASUS prime Z370-A with the Intel Core i7-8700 processor installed. I have an older version of Pro Tools with an M-Box 2 that I like to tinker with and was hoping for less latency. This does the job. Also all my other applications run fast as well.
