RODE VideoMic Pro Overview

This B&H Kit includes the Rode VideoMic Pro+ battery-powered shotgun microphone with a 3-stage gain adjustment and two tone-enhancing settings, a shoe-/boompole-compatible Rycote Lyre shockmount attached to the mic, and an Auray custom furry windshield, providing a flexible mic setup for quality indoor or outdoor audio recording using any camcorder or HDSLR camera, no plug-in power required. The Auray windshield slips over the VideoMic Pro+ to deliver effective wind noise reduction and minimal high-frequency loss without impeding the microphone's shockmount or cable run.

RODE VideoMic Pro+ Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone

Equipped with expanded power options, extended tonal control, and a redesigned windscreen in a smaller footprint than the VideoMic Pro, the Rode VideoMic Pro+ is optimal for mobile journalists, vloggers, budget filmmakers, and run-and-gun shooters in need of a flexible camera-mount shotgun mic that's also at home on a boompole.

With versatile battery/USB power options, upgraded RF immunity, adjustable gain, and multiple clarity-enhancing features, the VideoMic Pro+ can meet the demands of videographers working in a range of indoor and outdoor environments.

This compact and lightweight shotgun microphone features an integrated shockmount that mounts directly to your camera or boompole and reduces noise from various vibrations. The reworked windscreen design minimizes wind noise, making it well suited for outdoor shoots. The 3.5mm TRS output and detachable cable ensure proper hookup to your camera, and the selectable safety channel prevents accidental distortion by providing a duplicate audio signal at a lower level.

Shotgun Mic with Directional Sound Pickup
Whereas most built-in camera microphones pick up sound from all directions, this microphone utilizes a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of it while attenuating sound from the sides and rear. Its low-noise electronics and sensitive condenser element deliver more detailed audio than the mics typically found in cameras and portable recorders.
Easy Hookup to Camera
A detachable straight 3.5mm cable is included for easy hookup to your camera. The microphone's 3.5mm TRS jack is wired in a dual-mono configuration, ensuring that the mic signal is sent identically to both input channels of your camera or portable recorder.
Versatile Power Options
Included with the VideoMic Pro+ is the LB-1, a rechargeable and removable lithium-ion battery that provides up to 100 hours of operating time per charge. If you don't have time to recharge the LB-1, just remove it and pop in two AA batteries (available separately) instead. The built-in battery door stays attached to the mic and simplifies battery changes. You can even power the mic via a USB connection to an external battery pack or charger.
Manual or Automatic Power On/Off
In addition to a power button, this microphone features a defeatable auto on/off function that mitigates unnecessary battery usage. When connected to the mic input of a compatible camera, the VideoMic Pro+ automatically turns on or off in response to the presence or absence of plug-in power. So, the mic shuts off when it detects a loss in power, either from powering off or disconnecting the camera.
Bass Roll-Off and Treble Boost
The high-pass filter can be set to 75 Hz or 150 Hz to roll off low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic. Knowing that intelligibility is crucial, Rode outfitted the VideoMic Pro+ with a selectable high-frequency boost, which enhances detail and clarity in the treble range.
3-Stage Gain Control
To enable optimal recording levels, the VideoMic Pro+ boasts a 3-stage gain control. Like the low roll-off and high-frequency boost, the gain control is digitally switched for precision and convenience. The +20 dB setting is ideal when recording to cameras, as it boosts the signal without requiring extreme gain on the camera's inferior preamp. Select the flat setting when routing the mic into a dedicated high-quality preamp, or switch to the -10 dB option when loud sound sources threaten to distort your recording.
Selectable Safety Channel
When source levels get unexpectedly louder, you risk overloading the recording. By pressing the power and dB buttons simultaneously, you can set the mic's right channel to output 10 dB lower than the left channel. This lets you record a safety channel and the main signal to your camera at the same time.
Informative LED Indicators
The main status LED uses red, blue, and green colors to indicate the current power source, charging status, and remaining operating time. Additional LEDs are allocated for indication of the safety channel, high-pass filter, high-frequency boost, and gain settings. An onboard light sensor allows it to adjust the LED brightness level in response to ambient light.
Integrated Shockmount Inhibits Vibrations
Understanding that the rubber bands used in many shockmounts can snap and stretch, Rode chose to integrate a rugged Rycote Lyre suspension-style shockmount. This simplifies setup of the mic and inhibits the transfer of vibrations from the camera. Plus, the bottom of the shockmount features a camera shoe mount with a 3/8" thread, ensuring easy attachment to your camera or a boompole such as Rode's Micro Boompole (available separately).
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The VideoMic Pro+ has an updated and optimized foam windscreen to minimize unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in outdoor environments, consider a furry windshield such as the Rode DeadCat VMPR+ (available separately).
Connectivity Options
Expand the microphone's device compatibility with Rode accessories such as the SC4 and VXLR (both available separately). The SC4 is a short cable that lets you connect the VideoMic Pro+ directly to a smartphone or tablet equipped with a 3.5mm TRRS jack. The VXLR adapter is the ideal solution when you want to record the VideoMic Pro+ to a camcorder or mixer that has XLR inputs.

Auray Windbuster for Rode VideoMic Pro with Rycote Lyre Shockmount

The Auray WSW-Series Custom Windbusters provide dual-layered wind protection, substantially reducing unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops with minimal high frequency loss. The Windbuster has been custom-made for the VideoMic Pro with the Rycote Lyre Shockmount and the VideoMic Pro Plus and is designed to be used over its existing foam windscreen. The simulated fur outer layer works in tandem with the acoustic-cloth inner lining to protect the microphone element from air bursts without muffling the sound. The velvet back cover with locking drawstring offers protection to the microphone, as well as easy access to the controls.

When used on the VideoMic Pro, the Windbuster is effective in minimizing wind noise and plosive sounds. It is most effective in light-to-moderate breeze conditions (4 to 17 mph), and users can generally expect a 30 to 40 dB reduction in wind noise with modest dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the modest high-frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the substantial wind-noise reduction. In addition to dual-layered wind protection, the Windbuster helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone.

RODE VideoMic Pro Reviews

Never Again

The quality of the mic is wonderful. The battery door is the worst I've ever used on any piece of equipment. I would not buy this item again simply because of the battery door. What a shame to have a great piece of equipment and make it overall bad because of one part.

Just OK

Build Quality is all plastic. It's ok for connecting to a dslr/mirrorless' trashy preamps, but not great for versatility or audio quality. Doesn't need phantom power, just internal battery. Def prefer something like a sennheiser mke 600 for more pro XLR connection / more secure / better build quality / easier to boom.

Bought this as an upgrade from the Rode Micro for my YouTube videos and I love it! The sound quality is excellent. The fact that it has its own on/off switch takes some getting used to though.

After you figure out where the battery goes the mic mounts well and provides excellent coverage. I used it with a Atomos Ninja 5+ to record elephants from 150-200'

BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL

I haven't even plugged it in yet and I'm upset. 1) As I gently lifted the mic out of its box one of the tiny black switches on the back fell off - and it just won't stay on. 2) There were no instructions included so, I wondered, how do I insert a battery? Seeing the small screw on the back I figured that was the answer. WRONG! On removing that I discovered all I did was expose the circuitry. And now the rear plate won't fit back properly and is held onto the body with tape! 3) I triple checked the packaging for instructions and eventually resorted to YouTube where a non-Rode video by phonesandmore gave a quick lesson. For 200 bucks is it too much to expect a simple diagram that shows how to insert a battery? Judging by the comments on the YouTube clip I'm not the only who had trouble figuring this out.

question

Is this the new version that will Auto power on when the camera is turned on ?
Asked by: Kenneth S.
Yes it does. This microphone features an auto-powering feature which keeps you from draining battery when the camera is not in use. When connected to your camera, the VideoMic Pro Plus detects plug-in power from the audio input on compatible cameras, and this signals the microphone to switch on. When the mic detects a loss in power, either from powering off or disconnecting the camera, the mic shuts off.

question

How do you attach the mic to the boom pole? Boom pole is a screw thread and mic uses a hot shoe.
Asked by: Lindsay M.
Just turn the mic upside down so you are looking at the bottom of the shoe. You will see a hole in under side of the shoe. The threaded stud at the end of the boom pole will screw right into the shoe. They are all 3/8 threads.
