RODE VXLR+ Overview

The Rode VXLR+ is an adapter that lets you connect a mic equipped with a 3.5mm TRS connector to the XLR input of a professional camera, recorder, or mixer.

The VXLR+ also converts 12 to 48V phantom power down to 3 to 5V plug-in power, allowing lavalier, headset, and shotgun mics to receive power from the XLR connector.

Compact and lightweight, the adapter is terminated by a 3.5mm female TRS connector at one end and an XLR male connector at the other. The 3.5mm connector is threaded to ensure your mic doesn't disconnect during recording.

I purchased this along with the Rode Rodelink Lav microphone. The thread-lock on the 3.5mm connector of the lav fits perfectly with connector on the Rode VXLR+. This allows me to belt-clip (included) the converter to the talent and run an XLR mic cable back to the mixer with phantom power when needed in place of connecting the lav to a bodypack for wireless use. It also works with the non-locking 3.5mm connector of the Rode Lavalier Go mic but this combination gives more assurance that the mic's connector won't pull out of the adapter.

Using it for the Smartlav+, works fine. Only complaint, the clip feels flimsy. You can't easily take it off/on, so you just leave it on there, but it also feels like it might easily bend the wrong way. That said, the clip is a minor element.

Get on in your gear bag if you have 3.5mm lav mic

It makes my low cost 3.5mm lav mic alive with my F8. Do get a Rode VC1 to extend the working distance up to 3m. I am a freelance videographer. I am using Sony ECM-C10 for interview with my Tascam DR-100MKIII for one single track recording. Due to the limited track, I have to buy XLR type lav mic together with my F8. However, I still find my ECM-C10 sound better than more expensive lav mic. After the purchase of VXLR+, I can use any 3.5mm lav mic with any multi track recorder! Thus, I don't have a spend more money for a XLR interface lav mic which might not performance better than my ECM-C10.

Just what was needed for my electret condenser microphone

I have a mixer that provides 48V phantom power but want to use an electret condenser microphone which operates off a bias voltage of 5V. The adapter not only adapted the XLR connection to a 3.5mm TRS connection it also converted the phantom power to bias voltage. The connections are solid and perfectly fitting into my mixer and the TRS jack makes a solid connection that will not fall out. Both important to me. When I was ordering I appreciated this was available in a well respected brand like Rode. The last thing I want is some cheap part failing in the middle of a performance! That's why this is a 5 star part for me.

arrived faster than it was supposed to, works perfect. Still using it half a year later when writing this review. I use mine to connect a Lavalier microphone to a yamaha mixer board for Twitch streaming. The sound quality is easily just as good if not better than using a bulky common streamer mic that is intrusive to viewing my screen and keyboard.

This is good if you want to plug a lavaliere like the Rode Lavaliere Go (or in my case, Giant Squid) into an XLR interface with phantom power. In my testing so far, I tried both a Rode Videomic GO Ii and my Giant Squid and turned on phantom power, and I did not have any problems getting it to work. The clip makes connection kind of awkward, but you really need to connect it to a cable instead of straight in your preamp.

The VXLR+ is designed to convert high voltage phantom power used with pro balanced XLR mic inputs into much lower bias voltage (plug-in power) that is needed by many unbalanced electret condenser mics like lavalier mics and shotgun style camera mics.

If I plug a stereo mic to the VXLR+, does it mix both channels into one mono? Or this just uses one of both stereo channels?

If it is a stereo mic it should have two VXLR connectors, one for each channel so you would need two adapters.

I'd like to use the 9V battery powered Rode ...

I'd like to use the 9V battery powered Rode Videomic (VIDEOMIC-R) to connect with a Zoom PodTrak P4. Will a standard VXLR converter work with that, or do I need this VXLR+ for it? Thanks!

Hello Stan, I show the TR50 as a XLR connection and therefore it would not. If there is a TR50 available with a 3.5mm TRS connector then yes, this will work for you.

The Rode VXLR+ 3.5mm TRS Female to XLR Male Adapter with Phantom Power Converter is typically used to adapt microphones with 3.5mm wiring to XLR inputs, however this adapter could presumably work in the same manner with a line level 3.5mm connection from a DJ deck into a line level XLR input on a recorder.
