ToP-ART Design
The ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design of the R-N803 is engineered to faithfully preserve the integrity of the audio signals by combining a symmetrical left/right circuit layout and signal directness (straight, short signal paths), a rigid, low-vibration chassis, and an "Art Base" resin frame fashioned to absorb and block unnecessary vibration for enhanced sonic purity and accurate stereo imaging of the music.
Low-Impedance, High-Power Amp
The R-N803 utilizes a high-power amp featuring a single push-pull structure using eight bipolar-type power transistors (four each for left and right) as its output terminals. Impedance is lowered by minimizing the lengths of the audio signal paths in the circuit design to achieve an enhanced drive power with a maximum output of 145W per channel.
YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer)
The R-N803 is equipped with YPAO technology, which is designed to measure the shape of the room, the material of the wall, and the position of the speaker, then automatically adjust the sound to create the appropriate response and sonic quality. Other YPAO functions are also available, including YPAO - Reflected Sound Control, which is designed to actively correct the early reflection sounds that influence sound quality, and YPAO Volume, engineered to apply high-precision EQ (equalization), with 192 kHz/64-bit operation for an enhanced listening environment. Additionally, after a scheduled future firmware update, you can control the YPAO feature and display the analysis results with the MusicCast app.
Supports High-Resolution Music
The R-N803 is compatible with high-resolution sound sources, such as DSD 5.6 MHz native and AIFF, WAV, FLAC 192 kHz/24-bit, as well as Apple Lossless 96 kHz/24-bit files. It uses a SABRE 9006AS 192 kHz/24-bit DAC (from ESS Technology) to deliver enhanced S/N performance.
Hi-Fi Everything
From your smartphone, networked audio, streaming services, or the TV, you'll enjoy Hi-Fi quality with enhances sonic integrity on everything you hear with the R-N803.
Digital Audio Input for TV or Blu-ray Players
The R-N803 is equipped for digital audio with both optical and coaxial inputs. The optical is for receiving audio from a display, and the coaxial is for receiving audio from a Blu-ray player. The audio stays in the digital domain, helping to provide pure, dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources.
Vinyl-Ready
Enjoy playback of your vinyl records by plugging your turntable into the phono input of the R-N803.
Fingertip Control
Tap, swipe, and control your music with the free MusicCast app, which can also control other optional MusicCast devices.

I'm generally happy with the receiver, but I needed to get a teenager to help with the MusicCast app to customize the receiver to the room.

THE BEST STEREO RECEIVER THAT GIVES YOU 21 CENTURE OPTIONS

Excellent sound

First, I don’t hesitate to rate something 5 stars even if I know that there might be something out there that sounds better, and costs a lot more. I don’t think I’d be able to “hear” the difference between this and more expensive units (Amps under $1500; didn’t try anything above) I was looking for a 2 channel receiver (not just an Amp, since I wanted Bluetooth, WiFi, to receive Pandora ...etc., but did listen to Amps as well to get a good comparison.) By specs: power, total distortion ...etc., this seemed the best in this price range. I hesitated a bit because it was not available locally, where I had listened to other Amps/receivers, and I could not find enough reviews of this receiver on the web nor on B&H site, but then I decided to take the plunge. I have had it for a couple of weeks now, connected to Klipsch RP-280F’s, and have used it so far with a CD player (classical and other) (the sound is supberb), with Bluetooth/iPhone ( sound is very good) FM Tuner (very good ), free internet radio (good to very good, but I think that that is more a function of the Internet). I have not yet applied a software update, which may improve a thing or two. I have it in a large room (approx 20X 35 and 10 ft ceiling, but the room is not “a box”, there are architectural details and built-ins, which I think make its acoustics better). Not sure how much YAPO’s contribution is. I have not yet tried any of the subscription services. I also have no current plans to use it with the Yamaha networking function to connect to other Yamaha components/speakers..etc. The build quality Is very good and it looks as good as similar and more expensive units - this thing is big - it is almost as big as my 7.2 , 120 watt receiver. I am very happy with it, and would recommend it to a friend. As to value, that’s obviously even more subjective than any of the above. Having listened to it for 2 weeks, I think it is appropriately priced especially that it is relatively a new release.

Modern Receiver

This is a modern receiver, with networking that works out of the box on both PC and Mac. I strongly suggest a wired connection for best uninterrupted performance. Cable service net connection is good. DSL drops out frequently, not a Receiver fault. USB is flawless. Plays my entire music collection, regardless of rights management. AirPlay is high quality sound. Control by Bluetooth on a tablet or phone is sweet. I like and use the multiple Optical connections. Easy upgrade to firmware is hopeful for future developments, but manual is wrong about procedure. After an upgrade appears, and you confirm install, hit the "Display" button on the front panel to complete the install. Net Radio is a bit clumsy for channel change button press sequence, but works well. I wish for a way to manually enter Net Radio addresses. "Pure Direct" feature does make a hearable difference in dynamic range, even from a modest CD Player.A preamp output loop would have been a nice enhancement, but not present. I have already recommended this Receiver to a friend who bought one. We both are spending more time with our music, the best recommendation.

Good sound, but cheap knobs and overall looks

Yamaha got the guts right, but I really am not thrilled with what seems to be a lack of attention to details. To be sure, this receiver has very good sound quality although. Not great, but very good. However, the knobs are very cheep, the display is small and the general build quality seems below par. When you're buying only two channels and paying a heft price, I think you should be able to expect more.

For the price, I don't think you can do any better than this. It's got everything but the kitchen sink and sounds great. It's not as 3D as the Yamaha A-S1000 I had a few years ago but it's smarter, especially if you have kids around (always starts at a low volume). Connect it to a pair of good speakers and will give you nice, clean, powerful sound.

This is as much of an integrated Hi-Fi Amplifier as any - If not more. This is not meant for TV. Why do they call it a "Receiver" but the "A-Series" is called an Integrated Amp?
Asked by: Chris
Not a TV receiver but I run my TV through it. It is an internet receiver and works quite well as that. Many internet channels available. It's also a RF AM/FM receiver. I originally bought the integrated amp A-S801 and destroyed by accident. I chose the R-N803 as a replacement as it's more functional across the board.

Can this drive two pair of 4 ohm speakers?

No, only 2 pairs of 8 ohm or 16 ohm speakers can be driven at the same time. Only 1 pair of 4 ohm can be driven at a time. This information comes directly from the user manual on Yamaha's product page.
