Tiffen 58TPK1 overview

  • 1Description

This kit consists of a: a UV Protection filter, an 812 Warming filter, a circular polarizer and 4-pocket filter pouch.

UV Protection Filters
Haze(UV) filters are wise initial investments. They help protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs. If desired they can be left on the lens at all times for protection. Haze filters provide additional benefits of correction for Ultraviolet(UV) light which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details. Ultraviolet filters allow you to correct for the UV effect to varying degrees.

812 Filters
Tiffen's exclusive 812 Filter improves skin tones and is ideal for portraits taken on a cloudy day or outdoors in shade on a sunny day. It also absorbs blue cast often caused by electronic flash and adds warmth to pale washed-out flesh tones.

Circular Polarizers
Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. Filter factor is between 2.3 and 2.8 (approx. +1.3 stops).

Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems).

    Tiffen 58TPK1 reviews

58mm Photo Essentials Filter Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good basic kit I bought this kit mostly for the UV protection filter, which I leave on full time as an extra layer of protection for my lenses. The other filters are for occasional use. The circular polarizer does provide dramatic changes in sky shots - from light to deep blue. As others have said, the filters do tend to cross thread making them somewhat difficult to put on. This limits my use for outdoor shots which tend to require speed before the subject runs or flies off. The little pouch is a useful addon and is flat enough to fit easily in the front pouch of my camera bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice kit This is a very good filter kit. I've had this for a few years now and just recently bought another one as a present for a friend. I wouldn't call it a pro filter kit, but then I'm not a pro, so it works great for me. I don't really use the 812 filter since if you shoot raw with a digital camera you can easily get those effects in software, but the other two I use a lot and am very happy about them. My only complaint about the kit is the build quality. The polarizer is pretty loose so it's all too easy to accidentally turn it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Starter Filter Kit So starting out with my first DSLR, I got this sent of filters as a gift, along with an 0.6 ND filter, to get me going and cover the basics. In all honesty, at first I thought the warming filter was just an extra bonus. But it produced amazing results when I first used it for a series of portrait photos at a local, monthly convention I attend here in Nashville, TN. This is a great kit and comes in a nice pouch, and is really all self explanatory, though experimentation is always a good thing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good starter kit, but... Being relatively new to the DSLR world, I wanted to try a polarizing filter. Thought this package was a good deal, as I was also interested in a UV filter just for protection. If you want try out a polarizer, see if you like the idea, this is a great way to start. That being said, I'm already looking to upgrade to a better one. In theory, you should be able to twist the outer rim of the polarizer to adjust the effect. The outer rim is so tight, it takes two hands to move it either direction. At this price, it's not worth the hassle of returning as defective (which it may be, or may be just that inexpensively made). When I use it, I keep it loose on the end of the lens and carefully use it that way. I don't want to crank it down any harder on my lens. That being said, the polarizer does what it is supposed to do visually. I found that shooting OUT of the bright sun, in the woods (I do a lot of butterfly/dragonfly photos), the polarizer eliminates a lot of reflection through leaves, that I hadn't really thought about. Helps bring out the detail. I would recommend this set to anyone on a budget, wanting a relatively cheap way to find out what filters do. I will be looking to step up to something better built in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from so far so good I have used the Polarizing filter but not had the chance to try the other two out yet. the pouch is handy and with the extra space I can keep my step down ring in there too :D - A big thankyou goes to the Team at B&H who helped me find the best value kit to buy, I would have probably gone for the very cheap version, but I was advised to go for this kit to be sure that i bought a set that would be a good quality at my budget range

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Price for Three Filters The UV lens stays on my camera mainly for protection. I use the 58mm Circular Polarizer on very bright days and have had nice effects during late evening when the sun goes down - esp with smoke from forest fires in the air. I have only used the 812 Color Warming filter a few times. Not sure I see much of a change - maybe change will be evident once I purchase some other lenses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great starter kit This is a great kit to get started learning how to use filters. It has all of the basics. I like the filter holder too. It's made pretty well and it fits into my wife's camera bag as well. it's pretty small. i would make it a little bit smaller though. Kind of like a cd holder. it would fit better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice essential filters for video I wanted to add a filter for video work. These fit the camera nicely. The kit allows me to change the setting easily and nicely. Great price. Also the protective pouch holds the filters nice and secure and take no real room in my gear back.
