Rotolight EL-Skyport Transmitter Reviews

Glad I got it

Let me get the three negatives out of the way: First, it's a little pricey. Second, there's definitely a delay on the display when adjusting the power or color temperature. Third, and unless I'm missing something, the Elinchrom only displays color temperature in 100s. So while the back of the Rotolight shows 4200; 4210; 4220; 4230, etc., as you turn the dial, the unit itself continues to show 4200 until you've turned the dial 10 clicks, at which point the Elinchrom will show 4300. This is not the end of the world by any means, but it seems odd that the tech can go this far but not far enough to show the readout in tenths. Now for the good: It has been worth it for me. Being able to adjust the power output from where I'm composing the shot instead of from behind the light has been invaluable. I'm also glad I don't have to worry about fastening an external receiver to the back of my light so I can use flash with a third-party transmitter. Finally, and I may have overlooked this somehow, but I recently discovered that it's possible to get in and out of the menu through the Elinchrom. I don't know how extensive the controls are over the video effects, settings, or other utilities, but it means I can switch between continuous and flash through the Elinchrom instead of having to push the buttons on the back of the light. Once issue, though, is the Elinchrom doesn't seem to indicate when you're in flash mode. If I can't see the back of my light, my solution has been to memorize the button clicks and dial turns needed to switch between continuous and flash. Not ideal, but it works. In case you're wondering how to get in and out of the menu: Press the Select button. You will see either Power or Color appear to the right. Press the button underneath until you see NAV in the window. Turn the dial one click to the left and then pause until the labels on the Elinchrom buttons reset. Take a test shot and you should see the light dim immediately afterwards, indicating you're now in flash mode. You can still adjust the power of the continuous light, but it will flash with every shot from this point. To get out of flash and back to continuous only, press Select again, then press the button to the right until it says NAV again. Turn the dial five clicks to the left and then pause. Once the menu on the Elinchrom has reset, you will be out of flash and solely in continuous mode.

Purchased this trigger for my rotolights. Little pricey, but it saves precious set up time for controlled lighting. I found that I shoot as much with the rotolights as I do with flash and video as well. Now I'm able to shoot super high speed flash and the trigger gives me complete control over the light. A must have for photographers who shoot from both sides of the fence.

Works well with the titan X1 light. Decent build quality, though a little light weight. Not a bad transmitter, though I have not tried it with any other flashes.

It works but...

I have this paired with a rotolight anova pro 2. It fires the flash no problem but it seems you can only control the modeling light and not the flash output. There is a serious lag on the read out of the transmitter when it comes to dialing in color temp or brightness percentages. However, the light does update and trigger immediately. HSS works great.

Great Purchase- Must have

Very easy to use , you need it in order to trigger the flash with your camera and the Rotolight Aeos.

question

Will there be a Fujifilm version of this transmitter or can the nikon or canon version be used of fujifilm cameras?
Asked by: T'wan F.
According to a Facebook post from Elinchrom LTD posted last year, and according to a press release issued by Rotolight on August 31, 2017, Fujifilm will be their next supported brand and a a Skyport Plus HS transmitter for Fujifilm should be released this year. However, at this time, there has not been a press release or an announcement of a specific arrival date for the Skyport Plus HS transmitter for Fujifilm. As such, I would simply recommend periodically checking our website or checking both Elinchrom's or Rotolight's press release webpage for an announcement or update concerning the Skyport Plus HS transmitter for Fujifilm. If you wish, you may connect a Skyport Plus HS transmitter for Nikon or Canon on a Fujifilm camera, but you would not get TTL automatic exposure or Hi-Speed sync capabilities when using a Skyport Plus HS transmitter not designed for your camera brand. You would have to set the flash output power manually when using a non-dedicated Skyport Plus HS transmitter.
