Sony NW-A45 overview

  • 1Description

Enjoy up to 45 hours of portable, high-resolution audio with the Sony NW-A45B Walkman Digital Music Player, offered here in a grayish black finish. This Walkman supports playback of PCM, AAC, WMA, and MP3 audio files, among others. It features 16GB of internal flash memory and supports microSD cards. The NW-A45 also boasts a 3.1" TFT color LCD touchscreen with an 800 x 480 resolution. Its built-in rechargeable battery provides up to 45 hours of continuous audio playback on a full 4-hour charge.

This Walkman utilizes several audiophile-friendly technologies, including DSD over PCM Playback and DSEE HX upscaling. Sony's wireless codec, LDAC, delivers a higher bit rate than standard Bluetooth, so you can enjoy an enhanced listening experience with a compatible pair of wireless headphones. You can also pair the Walkman with other compatible devices over conventional Bluetooth with NFC.

The NW-A45’s proprietary operating system works with Mac and Windows computers, and utilizes a simple drag-and-drop process for quickly moving songs from your computer library to the Walkman. Also, you can use the NW-45B as a USB DAC, circumventing your computer’s sound card and achieving better sound in the process through the unit’s S-Master HX amplifier.

Hi-Resolution Amplifier
Optimized for High-Resolution Audio, the S-Master HX amplifier reduces distortion and noise, allowing you to enjoy all the subtleties in your music.
DSD via PCM
The NW-A45B supports DSD audio formats by way of high-quality PCM conversion.
DSEE Upscaling
The Digital Sound Enhancement Engine HX (DSEE HX) upscales compressed digital music files such as MP3, AAC, ATRAC, and WMA, bringing them closer to the quality of high-resolution audio.
Precision-Engineered Build
The circuit board of the NW-A40 Series has been engineered for efficiency. The layout from the battery to the audio block minimizes the power loop, making the power supply stable. This results in a clear sound with solid low end. Other precision-engineered components include lead-free solder on the circuit board and the S-Master HX chip (CXD-3778GF), resulting in an efficient electronic connection.
Ambient Sound Mode with Compatible Headphones
Listening to music but still want to hear the outside world? When you're using compatible IER-NW500N headphones, select Ambient Sound Mode and the NW-A45B will let in external sounds to keep you aware of your surroundings.
LDAC Transmission
LDAC uses a conventional Bluetooth connection, but transfers at a maximum data transfer rate up to 990 kbps–approximately three times that of other audio profiles. The result is a wireless listening experience capable of streaming PCM files with high sample rates.
USB DAC
Use your NW-A45B as a USB DAC (digital-analog converter) by pairing it with a Mac or Windows PC. When connected and activated using the supplied USB cable, the unit replaces your computer's regular sound processing with its own hardware.
Touchscreen Controls
With the large, full-color touch screen, you can change tracks, create playlists, and more.
Bluetooth with NFC
Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth technology make connecting to your music fast and easy. Just touch your NFC-enabled device to the NW-A45B for a seamless connection, then start streaming.
MQA Support
The NW-A45B is fully compatible with MQA, furthering its functionality when it comes to lossless music.
Expandable Memory
Want to store more music on your Walkman? Pop in an SD card (available separately) for additional memory.
Handy Buttons for Quick Control
The play/pause, music selection, and volume buttons on the side panel are shaped and positioned for easy operation.

    Sony NW-A45 reviews

NWA45B Walkman Digital Music Player (Greyish Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Didn't know what I was missing until now. Wow. Just wow. I'm stunned with the sound and build quality. I've been using an ipod version (older than the classic) with the Wolfson DAC. It finally died and instead of fixing it I decided to move on.I absolutely hated using my smart phone for music. So I did tons of research on DAC players and felt this unit fell in a reasonable price range. After purchasing this, I picked up a 256 micro sd card and downloaded the sony media software for managing the audio content. The results are amazing. 100 times easier to work with than itunes. Using this player is like rediscovering my music all over again. Has Bluetooth and FM radio. Battery life is stellar as well. I would highly recommend over apple audio products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I just love this amazing player! As someone in her 50's from Japan, I lived with the original Sony Walkman for many years. After many mp3 players and Apple music devices, this Sony Walkman is what I was waiting for! I just love the simplicity and what it is capable of. Amazing sound, solid body, and the long battery life. I don't stream music - I carry my music in CDs and PC:) I could put all my music into a SD card and now this has unlimited capacity, unlike my iPod. And adding music to the SD card is so easy using the Sony Media Go. I even dropped this one time on the floor and worried but it has no damage. This also works very well with my Sony little portable speakers. I am very happy with my purchase (purchased 6 months ago).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded expectations, best digital music player ever owned. I have been waiting since last year for this product to be released and it has finally arrived. Not many detailed reviews as of this point, so I want to point a few things out: Size: Of course this player is larger than an iPod Nano Touch its more like the size and weight of the larger iPod touch and older iPods. Don't know why I am comparing this to a Nano Touch as it has way more space, so that's not fair. It does have a little bit of weight to it and instead of rounded corners is has slightly rounded corners so a little bit square. But I have found that it fits in my hand nicely, while the fingers of my hand rest right where they should on the side buttons. So yes larger and heavier than iPod Nano but, maybe around the same size as the comparable iPod Touch. Probably would like it just a bit smaller but it fits in my hand nicely and the buttons are just in the right spot so I don't have to look to change the side buttons. It will also stand on end since its somewhat square. Turns out to be a benefit that I wasn't expecting. Interface: So many people have compared previous Walkman's to iPods that's not fair. Apple is a software interface company of course they will have a superior user interface (IMO). Sony is a hardware/sound company. This Walkman interface is neither clunky nor slow or laggy like others have expressed about previous versions. No, its not super fast like an iPod while scrolling, but the pace is what I like and what I expect it to be. I actually love the ease of use, options but its not overkill and it is efficient. So the user interface is no iPod Touch, but it seems to be very user friendly and works perfectly. A little less flashy interface than the iPod but you can still sort through thousands of songs by scrolling through letters quickly. In the end, I might end up preferring this interface. As far as my needs: I don't want nor need apps. I wanted a pure dedicated music player that only specializes in sound and functionality that works while I am finding my songs. Don't need all the garbage getting in my way, that's what my cell-phone is for. Proprietary Cord: I have seen several other reviewers who complained that this player has a proprietary USB cord. Big deal! If you lose your chord buy another one, it still fits a standard USB port. Besides its not like iPod doesn't have a proprietary chord, so I just don't understand why people are upset about something that doesn't even matter. The end that plugs into the player is larger than a standard universal USB, maybe that's so it can transfer much larger files quicker. Not sure. Additional Notes: I popped my memory card into the player and dropped my music onto the card via MediaMonkey. No formatting or card needed, not needing to create a folder on the card (like some reviewers commented). It just works. Also there is a folder that sorts songs by year, I added the release date to all my songs and can play songs only from that year. Very nice feature I have never found on an iPod. Also, I was concerned the songs dropped onto the card would not mix with the songs in internal memory... that's not a problem. Whether your music is mixed and matched from internal memory to outside storage it all shows up together in the sorted folders like the should (i.e. artist, year, album, etc.). Sound: I converted all my CD's to FLAC compressed, I am not even using the best resolution of 24 bit DSD which is the highest quality. The sound is so amazing, all these other little aspects and features like interface, size, proprietary chord, that we are nitpicking don't even matter. I was concerned that streaming would lose some quality, perhaps that is true, but to me it sounds just as good being streamed to my Sony XB30 and Bose wireless speakers. I could not tell any difference of LDAC Bluetooth versus chord plugged in. Now I see why Sony was touting this LDAC Bluetooth streaming function. Still extremely rich in sound and base and you can feel the music in your soul. Its that good, and make this player worth every penny. Summary: This player was never meant to be an iPod with apps, its simplistic beauty and great functionality is refreshing. I bought this player so I could control my own music and take my library everywhere with me. Don't need to take pictures, connect with Spotify, text my family that's what my phone is for. I can play this in the mountains without streaming issues, or driving in a tunnel traveling through West Virginia. For years I though I just wasn't interested in music anymore, but its just because MP3 songs don't give that depth and feeling like higher quality music that this player offers. My music is alive again and now has a feeling that reverberates in my soul while listening. For the people who say you can't tell a difference between MP3 and CD, well maybe not too much by ear (I hear much more depth), but you can feel it much better in your soul and connect with each song. Almost like its live. This comes from a tone deaf person, so I know others will feel it as well. Anyway, any nitpick on this player will be a very small issue that will pale in comparison to the output. This music is so good, you won't care whether or not this has any other issues (which I have found mine does not). Sounds as good sounding or even better than the old Sony Walkman CD players (at least in my CD FLAC songs) but my entire digital library can be carried with me everywhere I go for streaming. Even without the included noise-cancelling earphones that are yet to be released, this player has exceeded my expectations and is so worth the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SONY Walkman NW-A45 It is an amazing piece of equipment! Simple and awesome sound. The Sony equalizer and sound effects are so enhancing. One thing though, if you use Bluetooth headphones, you cannot change any sound settings. This is only possible with Walkman models that have Wi-Fi capability. You can change sound settings with Bluetooth headphones via the Sony Headphone App. I really wanted to go wireless but achieving the best sound quality to me is top priority. I highly recommend it and definitely use the Sony music program for your PC or Mac. Enjoy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality but very high priced The player has great sound and features. Do not go by Sony's web site for the spec's on this product. The pictures are a bit deceiving showing color matching headphones. Even the paperwork included with the product says the wired ones come with it. Calling Sony they explain that they only supply them in Korea and The UK. Understand without them the FM Radio function will not work as they are needed for the antenna. I would have given 5 stars had they been included.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes You Can Hear the Difference I like the look of this HD audio player by Sony. I put a 128 mini sd card in the slot provided which is more than I'll probably use. The player plays a variety of audio file types and even plays standard wav & aiff files well. When plugged into the usb port on my Yamaha 7.1 receiver the sound is fantastic. The one big drawback is that the receiver won't list or play any files that are on the mini sd card, it will only play the ones that are stored in the device's 8 gig hard wired memory. This may be the fault of my 4 year old receiver and not the Walkman itself. You can't beat B & H's price for this model and it readily stacks up against the other more expensive players in its class. Once you hear this player playing HD music you will be hooked!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely love it! Very pleased with the unit. Very easy to use, love the drag and drop features, and love the built in settings and features on the unit. The SD card slot is a major winner for me as well as I like to have a ton of music on mine. I use the unit mostly for running, but also while I travel as well. I love it, have no complaints, and as a previous owner of other branded portable music players, this one by far has exceeded my expectations and the functionality of other competitors in the price range. Nice job Sony, and thanks B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Dedicated Music Player Great sound and feature. Seamless integration with MusicBee. Easy connection with Bluetooth speakers/cars. Only complaint is that the FM receiver can't tune in my station at work but trying a few headphone options to help the antenna. Great product.
