Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens (Sony E) Overview

Elegant and versatile, the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens is a fast and compact wide-normal prime for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Featuring an optimized optical design, two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for impressive clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range. The lens is also defined by its bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, which benefits working with selective focus techniques and also aids working in low-light conditions. Additionally, a 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality, and the lens's manual focus operation permits working with subjects as close as 1.1' away.

Wide-normal prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 60mm equivalent focal length.
Notably fast f/1.2 maximum aperture helps control depth of field for shallow depth of field shooting, and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 1.1'.
A 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Electronic contacts relay Exif information to the camera for accurate focus assist functions and metadata recording.

I have a Sony A7R3, and I purchased the e-mount Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 lens from B&H and I must say I LOVE the pics this lens takes. The colors are rich, deep and sharp. I have an autofocus lens which is also very good, yet I use this manual lens more often yet it is better in color saturation and separation of background, which is amazing! I still was able to get a clear shot of a dog that could not stand still with this manual lens along with IBS. But to put it simply I use this lens mainly for everything, I would only use an autofocus lens unless it's a fast moving object. You would think I might not be using the full capabilities of my A7R3 combined with a GM or G lens or other third party lens, but I'm very happy with this Voigtlander lens and it's size, and it's smoothness when focusing. Very well engineered! There is a certain uniqueness to this lens and it's pictures :-)

I know this is manual focus, but how about aperture? Do I have to "manually open to widest, focus, stop down, shoot", or does the lens remain at the widest aperture and close down automatically when shooting?
Asked by: Ronald
The Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens (Sony E) has an aperture ring. So you control aperture from the aperture ring. The aperture can't be controlled from the camera as there is no electronic connection between the camera and the lens.

Focusing mapping would not be available on the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens for Sony E since it needs to be focused manually.

question

What is the T-stop (i.e., light transmission equivalent) of this lens?
Asked by: Vadim B.
Voigtlander does not list T-stop measurements for the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens for Sony E; the lens is only measured in f-stops. As no two lenses transmit the same amount of light (as each individual lens experiences some light loss due to internal reflections, refraction, and absorption inside the lens off their individual glass elements), there is no constant conversion from F to T stops. While DxOMark is a good website to find the maximum light transmission of a particular lens model, unfortunately, they do not list any Voigtlander lenses as tested in their database.

It looks good for the full frame, but will the quality be as good on the Sony a6500 crop sensor?
Asked by: Jim
Yes it will be. Beyond the crop factor lenses that can cover a full frame sensor will work just as well on a cropped sensor camera with the same lens mount.
