Sony FDR-AX700 overview

  • 1Description

4K and HDR are now available in an easy-to-use camcorder format with the Sony FDR-AX700 4K Camcorder. Using the HLG format, HDR (High Dynamic Range) images can be recorded and processed for playback on HDR screens. Compared to SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) formats, HDR offers increased color and contrast representation that is immediately noticeable. Dual SD card slots, an LCD and viewfinder, manual controls, a 12x zoom range, and a comfortable form factor make the AX700 an all-around camera for anything from family events to professional filmmaking and videography.

4K recording has made focusing more difficult. Missed focus becomes exponentially more obvious with the increase in resolution over HD formats. Sony's phase detection autofocus uses 273 points to lock onto and track subjects as they move through the frame. Focus speed and tracking can be adjusted to fit your project. So, whether you're tracking fast-moving vehicles or actors moving through the frame, the AX700 will be able to keep up and maintain sharp focus.

For more advanced users, Sony included S-Log2 and S-Log3 picture profiles alongside their S-Gamut color space. Enabling this functionality grants you greater control over the final image through post-production processing.

4K HDR Video Recording
Recording in HDR using Hybrid-Log Gamma (HLG) enables you to record and display wider ranges of exposure and color than normally available in SDR media. Without extra processing, HDR recordings can be enjoyed by simply connecting the camera to an HLG-compatible Sony TV using a USB cable.
XAVC S Recording Format
The XAVC S format is used for 4K and HD recording. Bit rates of up to 100 Mbps for 4K, and 50 Mbps for Full HD recording, ensure detailed video with minimal compression noise. 100 Mbps recording is also available at 120 fps in Full HD, so high-quality slow-motion sequences can be created during post-processing.
Proxy Recording
Speed up your editing and delivery with the option of onboard proxy recording. Lower-resolution proxy files are captured alongside full-resolution 4K video, for easy sharing and online collaboration, as well as more efficient editing on under-powered computers. When you're ready, simply substitute the proxy files with the full-resolution ones to finalize your video.
Slow and Quick Motion
Enjoy creative ways to express time's passage. The Super Slow Motion and Slow & Quick Motion let you capture motion in the blink of an eye, at up to 960 fps in NTSC or 1000 fps in PAL (40x super slow motion), or in compelling time-lapse sequences, captured at 1 fps for playback at up to 60x natural speed.
S-Gamut and S-Log Picture Profiles
S-Gamut and S-Log shooting gives you more flexibility to custom-tailor your images by performing color grading in post-production. S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma provide wide dynamic range shooting (1300%), to minimize blown highlights and crushed blacks.

While exposure may be more difficult to judge off the LCD and EVF, exposure zebras are available, indicating areas of overexposure using clear stripes on the image preview. An adjustable level lets you accurately dial in the ideal exposure for everything from skin tones to sunlit landscapes.

Timecode / User Bit
For professional workflows and multicamera editing requirements, standard SMPTE Timecode and User Bit can be included with your recordings. With embedded timecode, synchronizing multiple cameras for editing is incredibly simple, while custom eight-digit User Bit codes allow fast indexing and media management on larger projects.

Phase-Detection Autofocus

Wide Coverage
Up to 273 phase-detection focus points cover over 80% of the entire image area. This makes autofocus coverage widespread and dense enough to quickly capture subjects, such as fast-moving ones that are otherwise difficult to focus on.
Focus Tracking
Easily keep track of your focus areas with phase-detection AF frames around in-focus subjects. Switching between focus points is seamless as well, with a simple touch on the screen to select a new focus target.

Five levels of AF Subject Switching Sensitivity are available. The Responsive setting allows the camera to switch quickly among multiple subjects or focus points, while the Locked-On setting favors a single subject.

Adjustable Tracking Depth Range
Select an AF tracking depth configuration within a range from "1" to "5"—from the narrowest setting for relatively little movement, to the widest setting for relatively dynamic movement. This lets you take advantage of specific ways to track subjects according to your expressive intentions, subject movement, and shooting conditions.

The OLED electronic viewfinder allows for confident compositions. Its wide contrast and color reproduction help accurately represent the image to be recorded.

The 3.5" touchscreen LCD panel provides a convenient way to monitor your compositions. Not only can the touch functionality be used for menu navigation, but focus points can be selected as well.

Manual Lens Ring
Using the switch on the side, the lens ring facilitates smooth and precise manual adjustment of either focus or zoom.
Manual Dial
The manual dial and buttons on the side of the body allow for swift, easy adjustment of iris (aperture), gain/ISO, and shutter speed.
Built-In ND Filters
Choose among Clear, 1/4, 1/16 and 1/64 Neutral Density filters to adjust the light level entering the lens. This gives video makers the freedom to precisely control shutter speed and aperture for greater creative possibilities. Utilize the ND filters outdoors to open up the lens and create out-of-focus backgrounds.
Dual Memory Card Slots
Dual slots for SD card and SD card/Memory Stick support, with both simultaneous and relay recording. Use relay mode where long recording sessions need to span across both cards; for critical recordings, the simultaneous recording mode provides a backup for improved flexibility in client and production workflows.
The built-in LANC port allows connection to a LANC-compatible accessory, so you can control the camcorder remotely.
4K HDMI Output
Send clean 4K video to external monitors and even off-board recorders, or simply enjoy your recordings on a TV, with the HDMI output. The full-size (Type-A) HDMI terminal provides a more secure connection than commonly-found Mini or micro-HDMI terminals.
MI (Multi-Interface) Accessory Shoe
The MI Shoe is compatible with various general-purpose accessories, and further expands the camcorder's shooting capabilities in a range of situations.

    Sony FDR-AX700 reviews

    FDR-AX700 4K Camcorder is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony FDR-AX700 is one of Sony's Best! I have owned many Sony video cameras over the last 14 years. Most of my video work use to be recording sports and other events. Now I do mostly documentary and short story dramas. This camcorder is perfect for both. I shot the last short story with the A7S, which is great, but other than the extreme low light ability, I like the AX700 much better. The focus is now on par with the A6300/6500. The 4K is very sharp and finally Sony has incorporated picture profiles in this class of camera. The perspective of this camera also is a good match with the A7S along with the color rendition. The menu is updated from the AX100 and has many custom button assignments for personal taste. It's a great camera! One complaint I have. I wish there was a way to assign one of the custom buttons to the audio record level. The focus ring is also updated from the older type fly by wire focus systems. The focus ring is still fly-by-wire, but it has a much more positive response that is much closer to a mechanical feel. I am still experimenting with Hybrid-Log Gamma (HLG) that enables you to record and display wider ranges of exposure and color. Although it does not have the real-estate with its small size to put many buttons and switches such as my other camera, the Panasonic AG-UX 90, but it seems to have a bit lower noise and a sharper image. Other than the ability to assign more features to the custom buttons, the AX700 is really working out for me. I am using it now on my latest movie short along with my A7S.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camcorder. I bought this last month at the NYC superstore. Had to wait half a day to get it but well worth the wait. Picture quality is amazing with 4K. I also bought the microphone and lighting with it. Downside, very heavy and big to hold as a consumer camcorder. But this is more prosumer. FPS is low compared to others but, I can live with it. Night shot is great even without using IR but this comes with Nightshot. Plan to make good usage out of this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little 4k camcorder. I've been into video camcorders for over 20 years. From SVHS to high 8 format. Now we can record 4k video on small SD cards...go figure.? I'm not a pro but I like high quality video when I shoot family outings and the such. This camcorder is just absolutely stunning when playback on a 4k TV. Sure it's a bit expensive but you get what you pay for. So if you want a good 4k camcorder, I highly recommend getting this one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Waiting for firmware update. Clear image, good controls, friendly menus. Good low light performance, with usable ISO up to 5000. And the good things stop here unfortunately. Dynamic range on default setting is awful for a camera with a HDR badge, actually the dynamic range is better on the AX100. Though, Ihaven'tbought this cameras for the default exposure, but to replace the old cameras and maintain the compact form (I do a lot of hiking in the Romanian mountains). About the altered gamma curves: ***HLG is obviously made to deliver HDR images directly to a HDR TV, and I think it does a good job as the exposure is decent and the BT2020 colour space delivers well balanced colours. Unfortunately, these are not very editable images. ***CINE are the only usable gamma curves, CINE 2 is my favourite, slightly more exposed than HLG. Until now, PRO colour seems to be the easiest to edit. ***S-LOG curves are unpractical for the moment, as they contain a huge amount of noise under any light conditions. Barely at +2EV they deliver less noise, but still unacceptable. Anyways, my personal opinion is these curves are useless in the 8bit format as they concentrate a very wide exposure spectrum in a very narrow band. Two stars cameras at this moment, though I am sure the future FW updates will improve these issues. Sorry for my English.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed and Returned 1. No Power saving mode, (I called Sony, and they confirmed the mistake). 2. No battery time indicator (replaced by a senseless percentage number). 3. No "menu" on the touch screen (like the AX100), was placed by a "menu" push button which on AX100 is a "manual" button. So, confusing. If one operates both AX100 and AX700, operating mistakes are expected. No, design continuity. Three steps back from the AX100. I have to wait for next modal to buy. So, sad.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far its been great... This will get a real workout on an upcoming trip, and perhaps I'll update after that. But so far, this has done a great job in testing prior to the trip. Battery life is so-so... I would definitely get some additional batteries, and probably the higher capacity units to make sure you don't run dead. The low light seems pretty decent, slows focus a little, but overall the focus on this (versus past Sony models) is a major leap in the right direction. In decent light, the focus is really fast and accurate. I love that this also has a very short focal distance to effectively do some macro video work on bugs/plants and other wildlife we encounter. Looking forward to getting a lot of good 4K footage on this on our upcoming trip, if we have any updates after that, I'll post more then.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good and odd I am not a pro, nor am I a very experienced videographer. I had to ask the experts at B and H to explain what dynamic range was. I am for the most part very happy with the camera. However, I do have four complaints that I think should be shared. 1-The designated button for going up and down and setting menu items is quite small. Therefore, if you use your thumb you tend to set the camera on the wrong menu item. The work around is to cross your hands and use the index finger of the left hand. 2-There is no place to attach a shoulder strap and you have to always hand carry the camera. I didn't see a shoulder strap in the accessories items offered by B and H either. 3-The lens cap does not stay attached to the camera and once removed there is a good possibility of being mislaid or lost. 4-The camera is set to video by default and cannot easily be changed to the photo mode without going through the menu. It is mentioned in the manual that the buttons can be programmed to perform this function for you. However, once you turn off the camera it automatically changes to video again. I wish this was easier as was in the old Sony cameras such as VX-2000 where you could just push the photo buttonand take a picture while shooting a video. I wanted to give this camera 4.5 stars but 4 is the only possibility.
