Sony HXR-NX80 Overview

Take the Sony HXR-NX80 4K NXCAM camcorder with you wherever you go to capture rich 4K HDR video. This compact, palm-style camera offers phase-detection Autofocus (AF) and HDR capabilities in a compact, palm-style body. Suitable for corporate events, broadcast news, and television production, the HXR-NX80 camcorder features a stacked 1" Exmor RS CMOS sensor with 14.2MP, a 12x Zeiss optical zoom, an OLED viewfinder, and a 3.5" touchscreen LCD monitor. This camcorder records 4K in XAVC S 4K, and it includes S-Log3/S-Gamut3 functions for additional image control. Additional features include built-in 2.4 GHz for multiple streaming options via RTMP/RTMPS protocols.

The HXR-NX80's Fast Hybrid AF uses high-density placement of autofocus points and a newly developed AF algorithm to offer highly accurate focusing and tracking, especially useful for individual operators. In movie recording mode, use the appearance of phase-detection AF frames to monitor your subject's focus. The HXR-NX80's 3.5" touchscreen is used to quickly switch focus among subjects. AF Drive Speed, Tracking Depth Range, and Subject Switching Sensitivity can each be configured to suit different subjects and content styles.

Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) enables you to future-proof your output by smoothly integrating your recordings into an HDR workflow without the need for color grading during post-production. Capture images with high-quality contrast and resolution using the HXR-NX80's 12x optical Zeiss zoom, and 18x 4K digital zoom (24x in HD). An integrated ND filter function enables greater exposure and depth-of-field control.

The HXR-NX80 camera supports Sony's Slow & Quick Motion for shooting HD video at variable frame rates, including 120 fps. Footage is recorded via two SD memory card slots, either simultaneously to both cards, or in relay mode to create a backup.

The HXR-NX80's audio features include two 3-pin XLR audio inputs that support line, mic, and mic +48V (phantom power) for using external microphones; you can also use the HXR-NX80's built-in microphone to record audio when shooting. For multicamera productions, the HXR-NX80 integrates seamlessly with Sony's MCX-500 live switcher (available separately).

Streaming
The camera supports RTMP/RTMPS live streaming protocols. This is included with the camera and as a free upgrade if your camera does not have this functionality. You can stream directly from the camera using Wi-Fi or via Ethernet with optional converters such as the Sony VMC-UAM2 or CBK-NA1. No computer is required for streaming.

Sony HXR-NX80 Reviews

Perfect for our needs

My company needed a set up that allowed us to film virtual events during the pandemic and this came through. We've used it to live stream and pre-record in the office, and have used it at off sites. It's worked perfectly.

Very competent 4K camcorder with professional features

My personal camera is the Sony FDR-AX700, which is the entry-level version of this series of cameras. The NX80 adds the audio handle and a few other minor features. Being very happy and familiar with the AX700, ordering the NX80 for my workplace was a no-brainer. And if I ever need to run two cameras for an event, the footage from them will match. Looking carefully at 4K footage on YouTube, it's clear that the Sony camcorders produce more natural-looking and sharper footage than competing products from Panasonic (unless you spend a lot more money on, say, the DVX200), JVC and Canon. Canon's 4K camcorders produce footage that's so soft it looks like 1080p! Servo zoom and built-in ND filters make this a great workhorse camera. Pro tip: It fits perfectly on the DJI Ronin RSC2 gimbal (with the audio handle not attached of course). The ergonomics are OK but a little odd, such as the placement of the Menu button; but it's not really a problem. You can choose full auto, full manual, or auto with manual overrides for gain, iris and shutter angle. Generally, for a great workhorse self-contained camera that suits a small business, I heartily recommend the HXR-NX80.

I love my Sony NX 80.

The Sony NX 80 is a fabulous camera for the price. The camera essentially provides most of the controls normally found on a pro camera - although some require the menu for use. However, the assign buttons (6) provide easy access to several of the more used functions as determined by the user. The 4K image quality is wonderful. My one criticism is shooting under low light.

Bought In March, Broke In September

I was hoping that the NX80 would hold up to regular use both in the studio and in the field. Much to my disappointment, the HDMI port, which was always a very tight and resistant fit, decided to break. It was not forced - and I have yet to understand exactly what happened, but I was worried that the connection was fragile. Now I must wait weeks for Sony to get the part which, according to them, will be difficult. Very disappointed and would not buy again.

Building a training studio for live stream interactive training and this camera was even better for what I needed than the first camera I had picked out. My first choice was discontinued and this was the one that was recommended in its place. It is going to allow me to really do some impressive live stream training!
