Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Overview

A flexible lens for telephoto shooting, the Nikon F-mount 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD from Tamron spans a useful focal length range along with a lightweight design for even greater versatility. The lens's optical design incorporates three low dispersion elements to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations, while an eBAND coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and clarity. Complementing the optical design is a high-speed Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus system, which is benefitted by a dual MPU for quick and responsive performance. Vibration Compensation is also featured to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Suiting this 100-400's use outdoors, it's magnesium alloy construction is also weather-sealed for working in harsh environmental conditions.

Spanning a versatile range of long focal lengths, this telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
Three LD (low dispersion) elements are used in the optical design to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range.
An eBAND coating has been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
An Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 4.9' away.
Dual Micro-Processing Unit control system contributes to quick and responsive performance for both the autofocus and Vibration Compensation systems.
A sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Through the use of magnesium alloy components, the lens's physical design is both lightweight and durable.
An optional removable rotating tripod collar is available, which features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Supports working with the optional Teleconverter 1.4x to further extend the effective focal length range to 140-560mm.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Worth the Wait

Arrived in very sturdy packaging. This lens appears to be well made and nicely finished. Autofocus is fast and image stabilization does a very good job (for those of us who are lazy about carrying a tripod. Images are sharp with the right amount of contrast. I've used Tamron lenses for many, many years and often choose to carry them instead of my heavier L series lenses. Kudos to Tamron for continuing to improve it's products. B&H, great company.

I generally shoot Nikon Lense but I find this 100-400mm lens to be a fine alternative to the Nikon. It compares very well to other lenses I have .

I used the Tamron 100-400 lens on my Nikon D750 with great results. Shots were clear and sharp, even distant objects such as high flying jet aircraft, at 400mm. No complaints.

Initially used Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6 w/Nikon D500 & D7100. D500 focus lock/tracking and IQ for BIF were superb w/Nikkor but combo was HEAVY. Switched to Tamron 100-400mm -- much lighter, very good daylight performance. AF performance and thus keeper rate slightly diminished relative to Nikkor zoom, but I accepted the tradeoff. With D500, 37 of 153 AF points are rated for f/6.3, with D7100 only 1 of 51 AF points -- all AF points work at f/5.6.

Excellent on DX cams, OK for FF. Its size-weight are great!

This lens is marvelous on the D500 and D7500, with sharp and fast AF, on the D850 it loses its edge, but is still very good. On the Z9 it does a good job but not as fast as the Z 100-400 from Nikon (4 times the price), although the image is close. I have taken some of my best bird action shots with this lens due to its small size and lightweight, it makes it easy to track fast! I have the G2 150-600, Nikon 500 PF, Nikon 600 F4, and this $700 DLLs lens is always in my bag, it is worthy of action everywhere. One of the true gems for an open-minded photographer.

This lens is quiet, not too heavy (though I definitely recommend trying one out for at least half an hour to see the real effect of the weight on your arms), and lets me take wildlife photos that I'm proud of! I will be buying from Tamron in the future because I love this lens.

In Comparison With Tamron 70-210, Which One Has The Edge In Terms Of Image Quality And AF Performance !?
Asked by: George
The main attributes which sets these two lenses apart are the zoom range and the maximum aperture. The Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD Lens offer a constant aperture of f/4 through its zoom range, however it does not have a longer range like the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens. Otherwise, both lenses offer great image quality. The right choice for you would depend on how close you need to get and what type of conditions you will be shooting in.

question

Borrowed this lens for use on Nikon D7200 last weekend. Two odd problems, both while using auto aspect (set at P). When depressing the shutter release to auto focus, I got a red haze around the edges and image would not focus through the viewer (photos came out sharper, however). Second, relying on auto, I was sharply over exposing the photograph. Giving priority to shutterspeed and manually increasing the speed three or four times resulted in correct exposure. Is this a matter of the lens not mating well with the D7200, or a problem with some setting on the camera?
