Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

A flexible lens for telephoto shooting, the Nikon F-mount 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD from Tamron spans a useful focal length range along with a lightweight design for even greater versatility. The lens's optical design incorporates three low dispersion elements to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations, while an eBAND coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and clarity. Complementing the optical design is a high-speed Ultrasonic Silent Drive autofocus system, which is benefitted by a dual MPU for quick and responsive performance. Vibration Compensation is also featured to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Suiting this 100-400's use outdoors, it's magnesium alloy construction is also weather-sealed for working in harsh environmental conditions.

Spanning a versatile range of long focal lengths, this telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
Three LD (low dispersion) elements are used in the optical design to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range.
An eBAND coating has been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
An Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 4.9' away.
Dual Micro-Processing Unit control system contributes to quick and responsive performance for both the autofocus and Vibration Compensation systems.
A sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Through the use of magnesium alloy components, the lens's physical design is both lightweight and durable.
An optional removable rotating tripod collar is available, which features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Supports working with the optional Teleconverter 1.4x to further extend the effective focal length range to 140-560mm.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

    Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected Many have commented on this lens as good but short of excellent at 400mm wide open. I found this lens to be excellent, with great EQ even at 400mm wide open. Once I fine tuned the focus with the Tap-in console, it produced images on a par with my Nikkor 200-500mm, at a fraction of the weight and size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Lens!!! This lens is absolutely amazing. Sharp, sharp, sharp! I bought it as an alternative to my Nikon 200-500 when I want to travel light. Fits the bill perfectly, and the IQ is as good as the Nikon. Out of the box, the focus on my D850 was slightly off, but I fine tuned it to +4, and it's just right. I wasn't expecting to be this pleased, but absolutely loving it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a good lens given the price and weight Overall, this is a decent lens. Probably better than any of the previous Nikon AF 70-300s I've owned (I have not owned the latest AF-P one though). It's light, and sharp across most of the frame. may require some focus adjustments with the TAP-In console, so be sure to buy that at the same time or before you plan on using the lens. It would have been nice if Tamron offered it with the tripod collar at the timeI purchased it, as a bundle for maybe $100 more (the collar itself is $130 alone, but at least it the option to add a tripod collar, unlike the Sigma 100-400, which does not).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great value I am a bird photographer and was frustrated trying to shoot with my kit 55-300. I shopped hard and was focused on the Nikon AFS 80-400 or the Nikon 200-500. The first was too costly and the second too cumbersome to shoot handheld. I read positive reviews on the Tamron and decided to give it a try. I am pleased with my choice so far as I am still experimenting what the lens can do. AF is fast and generally accurate. Colors are true, particularly with the use of a polarizer when shots are near water. I purchased the optional docking station but have not used it yet as shots are in focus at various ranges. Images appear sharp even when blown up. Colors are good when I

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Optics-Light Weight Well designed tele-photo lens, was undecided between this lens and the equivalent Sigma 100-400 mm lens. Both were very sharp, approx. the same weight but the deciding factor for me was the ability of the Tamron lens to accept the optional tripod mount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than I ever expected! Only had the lens a couple of weeks and so far taken about 500 pictures. Very happy with the results. Did my own testing for focusing and clarity at different setting. All came out quite well. Going to the Pacific Ocean tomorrow morning and shot some birds. It's not really that heavy to hand hold as I'm a young 78. Thanks Tamron.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A better alternative I won't bore you with redundant details since there are formal reviews and specifications available. I will tell you that in my opinion except for 1/3 stop less light at the high end this lens is on par with the big N(G) equivalent at almost 1/3 the cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great telephoto without breaking the bank! First impressions of the lens on a D5500 - feels very sturdy and well-made. It's not hard to hand-hold at 2.5 pounds but heavier than prior lenses I own. I have taken just a few shots with it so far and I am really enjoying it. As someone relatively newer to photography, this is a great telephoto lens without breaking the bank. My prior zoom was a Nikon 55-200mm VR. This shot is straight from the camera - no post-processing. I haven't used it enough yet to give it 5 stars.
