G-Technology G-DRIVE EV overview

  • 1Description

The 4TB G-DRIVE ev RaW USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Rugged Bumper from G-Technology is designed for those who require on-the-go access to their personal and/or professional files, photos, videos, music, and more. When the included removable bumper is attached to the drive, it is better protected against falls of up to 4.9' / 1.5m on a carpeted concrete floor. If the bumper is not being used and the drive sustains a fall, it still receives some protection, but only up to 3.9' / 1.2m. Moreover, the G-DRIVE ev RaW is outfitted with technologies that enable transfer speeds of up to 136 MB/s.

This drive is well suited for performing various tasks, such as backing up, editing, transferring, and general storage, as it is equipped with a 4TB capacity . The drive has two built-in interfaces - USB 3.0 and SATA. The USB 3.0 interface is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and will allow users to connect the drive directly to their desktop or laptop. For those who wish to utilize the drive's SATA interface, this may only be done using the G-DOCK ev with Thunderbolt, the G-SPEED Shuttle XL with ev Bay Adapters, or the G-SPEED Studio XL with ev Bay Adapters.

While the G-DRIVE ev RaW does come preformatted for Mac 10.9 and later, it can be easily re-formatted for Windows 10, 8.1, 8. and 7. This drive is also compatible with most Evolution Series G-DRIVE ev products. The 4TB G-DRIVE ev RaW USB 3.0 Hard Drive operates solely using bus power and includes a USB 3.0 cable.

    G-Technology G-DRIVE EV reviews

4TB G-DRIVE ev RaW USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hard Drive with Rugged Bumper is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective. Not as good as the old G-Tech I bought 2 of these and they both have usb ports that refuse to keep a secure connection. They keep disconnecting themselves. You have to wiggle the USB cord just right and pray it doesn't budge at all or else it disconnects. G-Tech used to be the only drive I bought, but these are terrible disappointing!!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice but WAY TOO SLOW Bought the 4 tb version hoping it would keep up with the shuttle XL raid transfer speed. IF it worked well I was gonna but six of them. I plugged it into the raid adapter bay and set out to make a copy that normally takes 40minutes. It was working at less than half the speed and said it was going to take 2hrs to complete!! I blame it on Gtech using 5400rpm drives in these. I would not recommend this for professional high volume workflows. Gtech should just make these as empty shells so the buyer can put in whatever drives they want. Sad Cus I really like Gtech stuff. This really fell short so I am returning it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lost all data only after 2 months of use I paid $180 for this product hoping it would store all my data and keep it safe. After two months of gentle use it failed and I lost all my data and premiere pro project files. When I went to recover it, The files structure seemed to have disappeared and I was just left with the raw media from the drive and nothing more. No folders at all. I now have to go through and painstakingly reorganize two and a half terabytes of data. I'm very frustrated with this and will no longer buy anything from this company. This set me back two weeks buried in recovery, and a months of filming and editing. NOT A GOOD PRODUCT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rugged, and it just works. The price was right, the item works exactly as expected, and it arrived on my doorstep in western Canada way faster than locally sourced items have been delivered recently. (Thanks FedEx and B&H.) What's not to like?! And frankly, although you never want to drop these things (they are not solid state drives, after all...), the bumper adds some measure of protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs as expected I bought two of these, and was very happy to discover they plug right into my G-Dock, something that B&H's notoriously incomplete product website did not list as a feature. So pleased with this economically priced 4TB 5400rpm HDD drive's convenience that I ordered two more. I takes less than 4 hours to upload 2 TBs of data from my archives. Fine with me. With respect to the other reviewers, and it certainly deserves to be mentioned that a 5400 rpm drive is not the zippiest drive on the market, I feel a one star rating is a bit of suffrage from a false expectation. There are plenty of 4TB solid state drives on the market, starting at $1,500 a piece, or buy two of the G-Tech 2TB SSD drives at $650 a piece, a bargain compared to a Vecto-Tech or U32 4TB drives. As I said, it deserves to be mentioned that they are what they are, which is convenient, large capacity, well designed and perfectly functional 5400rpm drives at an amiable price. I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from G-Drive Love this external drive So far so good, my 2tb external drive I was using for Time Machine back-up quit one day, so I replaced it with this G-Technology 4TB G-Drive and the size is perfect. Only been using it for a short time and it my be a tad noisy while running the jury is still out on that.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from slow I bought for the usb-c direct connection to my MacBook Pro but was surprised to find it is slower than both my old thunderbolt 2, and usb3.0 external hard drives. I would return it if I could, but it does work - just slowly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Look nice but don't hold into usb These drives are virtually unusable. They just disconnect randomly from the usb plug and I can't use a drive like that. It's too bad because they look nice. They just don't work. And after I realized this, I had already added a couple TB of video to the first one. This is totally impossible to use when streaming video from the drive as the screen goes blank as it disconnects each time. And these folks have rules that are inflexible. I liked the first one when I got it so ordered a second one. It took a little bit of time to be sure it was the usb on the drive itself that was bad. It could have been the motherboard which is often the reason a USB drive won't stay connected so after ruling that out, I decided it would be best to exchange the 2nd one for a better quality drive. This was, of course, not possible to determine with 30 days, so these folks won't let me exchange it. Even though it's sealed in the box I received it in and they do know this is a known issue, they will not bend. The right thing to have done would have been for them to inform me the drives are defective when they heard I had the same problem as others here and I might have been able to exchange it within the time limit. That is sleazy to me. To know the usb is an issue for others, not even tell me and then refuse the unopened drive return is not right. I didn't ask for money back, just an exchange. Also not a profitable way to do business in the long run. When I was buying these, I remember receiving one carton of drives after another from these people. I understand rules are rules. But when they could have prevented this and didn't inform me when the first drive was discovered bad, the responsible merchant does the right thing and adjusts the rules to fit the situation. That is only logical. They do have a good selection of drives here at good prices. But how can I buy anything after this?
