Inspired by a classic piece of studio gear—the UA 1176 often craved, coveted, and cloned—the Walrus Audio Deep Six is a stompbox compressor with a true bypass circuit. Its control set is relatively simple, with attack, sustain, level, and blend knobs dictating the effect.

Attack allows you to shape the envelope of the compression/sustaining effect, while the sustain knob controls how long the compression will last. Thus with these knobs, you can dial in a setting that gives your lines a little more pluck, or smooth everything to a more consistent level, making your notes ring out longer, and letting you move faster along the fingerboard. A level knob provides the means to juice your gain going into the amplifier or complementing pedals. A blend knob is on hand for setting your unprocessed to compressed ratio exactly to your predilections.

For those of you who obsess about under-the-hood features in boutique pedals, the Deep Six is sure to satisfy, with an included polarity correction circuit to obviate any phase-offset issues, as well as an internal voltage of 18V for high headroom. The pedal can be powered from a 9V battery, or you can use an external power supply.

Controls at a Glance
Level Knob: This is used to set the Deep Six to unity volume. When maxed out, the Deep Six provides enough output to drive an amplifier or other pedals for added sustain and pleasurable tonal breakup.

Blend Knob: This control mixes in the compressed signal with the original, dry signal. Running blend all the way down while adjusting your Level control will allow you to use the Deep Six as a volume booster. Turn the Blend control up to blend in the compressed signal. For high output signals (humbuckers), the blend control allows you to dial in more of the dry signal and dial out the distortion that most humbuckers impart upon a compressor.

Attack Knob: This knob lets you adjust how fast the Compressor will react to your notes. Set it higher for punchier leads or lower for a more compressed, even sound.

Sustain Knob: This is effectively your release control. For rhythm playing, you can run the Sustain control at lower settings so that the Compressor is more of a tone shaper. This will keep your sound and compensate for any variance in the velocity of your strumming. For sustained lead tones in the vein of Carlos Santana or Eric Clapton, turn up the sustain control.
