Pelican 1535 Air Case overview

  • 1Description

Combining strength and lightness, the black Pelican 1535AirNF Wheeled Carry-On Case  2017 is watertight, crushproof, dustproof, and optimized for travel. For travel by air, Pelican has aggregated available airline rules for maximum overhead and check-in dimensions with the goal of creating a case that conforms to their requirements. Of course, there will always be exceptions, so it's wise to contact your carrier before departing.

Your 1535AirNF case is made of a super-light, proprietary HPX polymer with honeycomb structural elements that is up to 40% lighter than most other Pelican polymers. This confidence-inspiring design has been drop-tested on concrete on all sides and corners while loaded with gear. Not content to stop there; the case is also tested with a 28 lb steel dart dropped from a height of 3 feet, submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of 3.3 feet, and wheels are roll tested over 1,000 yards with loads at 5 mph.

Fully-featured, the case has ABS double-throw latches that accept a user-supplied padlock, a watertight O-ring gasket, an automatic purge valve, and stainless-steel hasp protectors. Users will appreciate the new, stylish conic curve lid shape, rubber overmolded handles, and an extending trolley handle. Additionally, for easier case ID, there's an attractive, removable polycarbonate card holder that may be placed on the front or side of the case.

    Pelican 1535 Air Case reviews

    1535AirNF  2017 Wheeled Carry-On Case (Black) is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Durability & Flex are key issues despite being a lovely case I previously own the 1510 & bought this and a 1525 Air as part of renewing my kit. The 1535 Air has a very slick look to it as its a darker shade of black. It's capacity is slightly less than the 1510 in practice due to the inset wheel carriage, a DSLR body with grip doesn't fit in nicely when you have a lid organizer on it (I bought the SKB Laptop Lid Organizer for this 1535 Air). Within my first shoot to a location studio, the case had some scraps on the bottom due to the very low clearance of the wheels. (The case had to traverse asphalt, pedestrian walkways & granite stone paths - the last was the killer blow scrapper) This new HPX2Polypropylene blend is just not as hard/resilient as the previous 1510. The surface is much easily marked, dinged and scrapped. Flex is another issue of concern, while one can stand on the 1510 (I'm only 125 lbs) without any flex or movement. The 1535 Air will immediately flex on the top and the sides of the case, which isn't very assuring. Standing on the ribs might slightly alleviate the pressure but it brings into question on whether well packed equipment inside could be compressed and broken. The top handle is back in the 2017 version onwards, but it is a shadow of the 1510 handle. I find myself using the top handle more often than the side handle so I'm not sure why Pelican decided to shave it down to a sliver of a handle. With all that said, I'll see how the case survives in the next 12 months, but the OCD in me is worried that I might have bought into brand perception & visual sleekness instead of reliability and function.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This one has the top handle! I bought different 1535Air and it had no top handle. Grrr. This one does and is the one you want. I sold my older model standard pelican cade of the same size as this one is much lighter. Great for airline carryon, and when they offer to check more bags for free you have no worries about this in checked baggage. Soft sided lugage gets me worried. First thing I did was peel off the PelicanAir and model number tags. Low profile ya know?
