QNAP TS-453BT3-8G Overview

Designed for media studios or small creative workgroups looking to simplify their workflows, the TS-453BT3 4-Bay NAS Enclosure from QNAP features dual 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, M.2 SSD caching, and 10GbE network connectivity. It is well-suited for professional collaborative media editing and high-speed file sharing and has been upgraded to include an OLED panel with two capacitive touch buttons.

The TS-453BT3 is powered by a 1.5 GHz Intel Celeron J3455 Quad-Core processor and 8GB of DDR3L RAM in a 2 x 4GB configuration. Network connectivity is achieved using the one 10GbE port and two Gigabit Ethernet ports that help accelerate virtualization applications and file sharing across devices. Or, use one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports on your Mac to get direct 10GbE access using the Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet (T2E) converter. This NAS also supports a variety of RAID modes, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, Hot Spare, and Global Hot Spare, each of which offers data redundancy, speed, or a combination of both.

This 4-bay enclosure has the ability to natively house both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA III 6 Gb/s hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA III 6 Gb/s SSD drives. When using the one 10GbE port, it can achieve download speeds of up to 683 MB/s and upload speeds of up to 543 MB/s. With AES 256-bit volume encryption, download speeds max out at 690 MB/s and upload speeds are delivered up to 520 MB/s. Using the Thunderbolt 3 interface, downloads reach as high as 514 MB/s and uploads max out at 356 MB/s.

Using the external two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, five 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, and one HDMI 1.4b port, this QNAP NAS can be connected to other QNAP devices, as well as other external drives and displays at resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz. Additionally, the TS-453BT3 is validated with FIPS 140-2 AES 256-bit encryption, helping to prevent sensitive business data from unauthorized access and breaches. The TS-453BT3 4-Bay NAS Enclosure operates using a 120W power supply that runs on 100-240 VAC @ 50/60 Hz. It includes two Ethernet cables, a power cord, 12 flat head screws for 2.5" drives, and an IR remote control. Protection is provided by a limited 2-year warranty.

Can you attach other external Thunderbolt hard drives to this and have them show up on your network? Say like a lacie, g-tech, promise etc portable drive or raid.
Asked by: Nathaniel
Honestly, this device has been a nightmare. Maybe it works for other people, but anyone using a Mac will have nothing but problems. I am still under warranty and the thunderbolt does not work AT ALL. My new Macs cannot even see the device. And if you don't use thunderbolt it's so slow it's useless for downloading large data. QNAP made me send the device back (and I had to pay for it). They returned the same device and its still NOT WORKING AT ALL.

What is the maximum storage size or capacity can we put on this device?
Asked by: Reynald
It depends on the size of NAS hard drives you select and your choice of RAID configuration. Using 4 - 8Tb drives in a JBOD configuration, you'll have 32Tb of storage. If you install 4 - 8Tb hard drives in a RAID 5 configuration, you'll have 24Tb of storage. One of the hard drives will be used for parity, ensuring that if you lose one drive, you can still rebuild the lost data after replacing the bad drive. This is still no substitute for proper backup however. An excellent source of information is Span.com: https://youtu.be/sfUckUdXQuY

I can't find information on how many large the drives can be. Any idea how many terabytes per drive? Also, does this device work wirelessly as a NAS as well as a DAS?
Asked by: Tira
I use 5TB disks RAID 1 and works great with no problems. Its a charm. Grest to see on other comments it works with 10TB Drives.

Can you daisy chain thunderbolt devices and still use the network?Say two or three MacBook Pros daisy chained with Thunderbolt 3, would they all be able to use the network drive? Or do they have to be directly connected to the Thunderbolt 3 port by themselves.
Asked by: Nathaniel
As far as I know, the MacBook is the end of the chain. Things plug into it. So, you would need to use both T3 ports to connect 2 MBPs. I haven't tried what you want to do but that is contrary to my understanding of T3.
