AJA Io 4K Plus Overview

The AJA Io 4K Plus Professional Video I/O for Thunderbolt 3 is a portable capture and output device that offers professional video and audio connectivity with support for DCI 4K and UltraHD workflows. It handles a wide range of formats from 4K to SD over both SDI and HDMI. Built around Thunderbolt 3 technology, the Io 4K Plus allows even greater bandwidth between host computer systems and Thunderbolt devices. The dual Thunderbolt 3 ports allow you to daisy chain up to 6 peripherals such as high-resolution displays and high-capacity storage. A built-in downstream keyer takes advantage of 4K resolution to provide clean composites.

Featuring four 3G-SDI inputs and outputs, as well an HDMI 2.0 input and output, the Io 4K Plus is capable of capturing and outputting 4K signals over quad link SDI or HDMI. It is also capable of handling UltraHD, 2K, HD, and SD resolutions, and supports HDR. When working with 4K content, the Io 4K Plus outputs an HD-SDI down-converted signal on a dedicated BNC connector. This HD signal can be used to output to HD recorders or monitors. Embedded 16-channel SDI and 8-channel HDMI audio are supported, as well as analog audio inputs/outputs via a standard DB-25 connection. Stereo monitoring is possible via a front-panel headphone jack. A 4-pin XLR power input is available for powering the Io 4K Plus with batteries or the included AC adapter.

A fabulous idea: Four SDI inputs, Four SDI outputs, audio breakout capable...All over one thunderbolt 3 cable. But alas, there are no free lunches in life. This device is not compatible in the ways one might think. Wirecast? Not unless its version 14 and above. Live Stream Studio? NOPE. What a beautiful invention for a simple live-streaming setup. If only it was compatible...

Works with a Laptop approved by Vmix and we've had no issues with it. The only I'd change is it won't output 1080 59.94P, only 1080 29.97 P. Hopefully this will be changed soon.

Excellent product! Have been using Thunderbolt version for years. Now with USB-C the speed is way better and I love the auto-power-off function, which turns off the fans and puts the unit to complete sleep (no need for separate power strip to control ON/OFF). Also feels cooler, even though still a hot brick, esp. in 4K mode. Although I use it 100% for editing, this is also a must-have product for any stable and high-end studio production as well as post. This product is compatible with Wirecast. It does have 4 SDI inputs which Wirecast will see a sources for a streaming program.

Does this unit extract clipname from sdi on red cameras?

Unfortunately it is not just a question of whether or not the AJA Io 4K Plus Professional Video I/O for Thunderbolt 3 (B&amp;H# AJIO4KPLUS) will extract clip name data, but rather whether such data would be passed through by the driver and also recognized by the NLE. While some data (such as the HDR flag) is specifically preserved and more broadly supported (because it's associated directly with HDMI protocols), less common RED clip name data may not be captured by some drivers, software, and other devices. Moreover, revisions in camera firmware, video capture drivers, and NLEs can also occur in ways that can change such compatibility in the future. As such, it's not possible for us to say definitively whether or not it will work in your usage case. The only way to determine that is to try it.

Just to clear, when I open vMix I can see all 4 SDI inputs of this Aja as 4 SEPARATE INPUTS. In other words, does software read the TB3 as a 4 lane I/O (I plug in 4 SDI sources and I can select to add those 4 sources independently in vMix)?

Yes, there are four inputs in vmix. Each can be used ad input or output. Have done this many times. You can use two units fir total of eight.

Would vmix or OBS see five independent video inputs from this (four SDI and one HDMI) as well as two independent video outputs (SDI and HDMI)? Or are the SDI and HDMI outputs just loop outputs of their respective inputs?

This device has 1 HDMI Input and 1 HDMI Output. However this only has 4 SDI connections that are Bi-Directional. They can be used as 4 Inputs, 4 Outputs or 2 Inputs and 2 Outputs. It
