Antelope Discrete 8 overview

  • 1Description

The Antelope Discrete 8 and Edge/Verge Microphone Bundle includes an audio interface and multiple-microphone bundle offering high-end tracking and monitoring functions, real-time effects, and versatile modeling for musicians and engineers in personal, project, and commercial recording studios and rehearsal spaces. The microphones and the Discrete 8's Accusonic 6-transistor mic preamps are designed to work together to provide a smooth out-of-the-box sound and characteristics that complement the included microphone and preamp models, which can be changed before or after recording.

One large-diaphragm condenser and six small-diaphragm condensers give you plenty of miking power for individual instruments or ensembles. The microphones, combined with Antelope's FPGA-based preamp modeling, compressors, and EQs, aim to give you the expressiveness, feel, and tone of famous vintage microphones.

The Discrete 8 audio interface features 26 inputs, 32 outputs, a host of real-time effects and models, support for sample rates up to 192 kHz, and host connectivity via Thunderbolt and USB 2.0. Eight XLR-1/4" combo jack inputs give you access to the eight discrete Accusonic microphone preamps. There are also ADAT optical and S/PDIF coaxial digital inputs for accepting signal from devices such as digital mixers and A/D converters. Multiple 1/4" outputs include two independent front-panel headphone jacks, two balanced monitor outputs, and two reamp jacks. Additionally, there are eight line outputs on a DB25 connection, two ADAT optical output ports, and one S/PDIF coaxial 2-channel output.

Over 50 real-time effects from guitar amps to vintage compressors can be used during tracking and mixing. The FPGA FX also allow you to change microphone and preamp models during mixdown. During tracking sessions, use the built-in talkback mic and convenient front-panel button to communicate with the artists, and control recording and monitoring levels via a downloadable app for iOS and Android smartphones or tablets.

  • Discrete 8 Thunderbolt/USB 26x32 Audio Interface with Basic FX Pack

The Antelope Discrete 8 with Basic FX Pack is a Thunderbolt/USB 26x32 audio interface designed to provide high-end tracking and monitoring functions, real-time effects, and remote control capabilities for musicians and engineers in personal, project, and commercial recording studios and rehearsal spaces. It features 26 inputs, 32 outputs, a host of real-time effects and models, support for sample rates up to 192 kHz, and host connectivity via Thunderbolt and USB 2.0.

Eight XLR-1/4” combo jack inputs give you access to the eight discrete Accusonic microphone preamps. There are ADAT optical and S/PDIF coaxial digital inputs for accepting signal from devices such as digital mixers and A/D converters.

Use up to two channel strips with four FX instances each within the Discrete 8 EasyPanel. The FPGA FX also allow you to change microphone and preamp models during mixdown. During tracking sessions, use the built-in talkback mic and convenient front-panel button to communicate with the artists, and control recording and monitoring levels via a downloadable app for iOS and Android smartphones or tablets.

Use Effects During Tracking and Mixing
    • Antelope Audio FPGA technology powers over 50 real-time effects. Use up to two channel strips with four FX instances each within the Discrete 8 EasyPanel. These not only sound but respond just like real hardware thanks to the unit's component-based modeling platform.
    • Plug in your guitar directly into one of the two hi-Z enabled inputs and instantly sculpt your tone with guitar amps and cabinet models. Add compression, EQ, and AuraVerb while playing through your preferred amp, cabinet, and microphone combination.
    • Perform and record either with effects or your direct input and process later using the integrated guitar effects. The Discrete 8's two reamp outputs allow you to connect any of your effect pedals or outboard gear and record that sound back into your preferred DAW.
    Over 50 Effects Included
    • Guitar Amps: Burnsphere (DE), Marcus II (US), Overange 120 (UK), Tweed Deluxe, Top30, Darkface, Modern, Plexi 59, Rock 75, Rock 22.10
    • EQ Legends: VEQ-55b, VEQ-STU 089, VEQ-STU 169, VEQ-STU 900, VEQ HA32C, BAE 1023, BAE 1084, NEU-W492, NEU-W495, NEU-PEV, VEQ-4K Black, VEQ-4K Brown, VEQ-4K Pink, VEQ-4K Orange, BAE 1073, VEQ-HLF, VEQ-1A, VMEQ-5, VEQ-55A, Lang PEQ2, UK-69, Parametric EQ
    • Vintage Compressors: X903, VCA160, Gyraf Gyratec X, Tube176, Grove Hill Liverpool, FET-A76, FET-A78, ALT-436C, BA-6A, SMT-100A, Stay-Levin, Tubechild670, PowerGate, FeedForward Compressor
    • Reverb: AuraVerb
    Customizable Signal Path
    • The Discrete 8's console-grade and fully discrete preamps were designed to offer high-end, customizable sound. The powerful Antelope Audio FPGA engine can transform these Accusonic preamps into several classic-sounding units via models of circuitry based on tubes, transformers, and FETs.
    • Both the engineer and the performer can instantly hear the blends of 10 different mic preamps without any latency or comb filtering. The microphone source can be recorded with and without Accusonic modeling. This allows the engineer to choose between preamp models during mixing. You can even load AFX presets from VIP Masters with their favorite combinations of FPGA FX that are used daily on their own award-winning mixes.
    Discrete Microphone Preamplifiers
    • Traditionally, interface preamps are comprised of two transistors, which makes them a hybrid between transistors and IC chips. Antelope Audio incorporates a fully discrete design consisting of six accurately matched transistors. Field effect transistors add a touch of warmth to the sound and bipolar transistors keep THD and noise extremely low.
    Accurate Clocking
    • The Discrete 8 features Antelope’s 4th generation 64-bit Acoustically Focused Clocking (AFC) technology from the acclaimed Trinity, OCX HD, LiveClock, Pure2, Goliath, Orion, and Zen products. Discrete 8 comes with a word clock input that can de-jitter and distribute an external clock signal. Three word clock outputs allow you to distribute clock signals to your other digital gear and to mic preamps in your setup connected via ADAT and S/PDIF.
    Versatile Monitoring
    • Discrete 8 has a comprehensive and easy to configure monitoring and talkback section. A band can have up to four individual monitoring mixes with FPGA FX included sent to headphones or monitor outputs. The engineer can make custom headphone mixes for each performer. Effects can be included to allow artists to hear sound closer to what will be on the record.
    • Users can create custom presets to easily set up various tracking scenarios in a snap. The front panel features a monitor volume knob and dedicated knobs for each headphone output. The Talkback mic is also built into the front panel right above the Talkback button. Additionally, Talkback can be engaged via the assignable footswitch on the back, in the EasyPanel software, or via the iOS/Android app. Metering is viewable on the front panel display, inside the EasyPanel, and via the remote App.
    Remote Control
    • Use the Discrete 8 downloadable remote app to adjust all microphone input levels, talkback levels, and monitoring and headphone volumes remotely. Musicians can control their own headphone volume with their phones and the engineer can check input levels from the tracking room.
    Cross-Platform Compatibility
    • The Discrete 8 can be connected via Thunderbolt or USB 2.0 and is compatible with Mac OS X and Windows systems

  • Verge Small-Diaphragm Condenser Modeling Microphone

The Antelope Verge is a microphone designed to be paired with Antelope’s FPGA hardware modeling to give you a digital, tonal emulation of acclaimed vintage microphones. This system relies on the company’s FPGA technology, which provides low latencies whilst recording, as well as an extremely light touch on the CPU side. The resulting behavior (and timbre) of these digital processes is similar to analog gear.

The Verge itself is a small-diaphragm, back-electret condenser microphone. An SPL-handling of 132 dB allows you to capture loud, percussive sounds, such as drums. With a frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz, the Verge microphone, combined with Antelope’s FPGA-based preamp modeling, compressors, and EQs, aims to give you the expressiveness, feel, and tone of famous vintage microphones.

    Accusonic 3D Modeling Engine
With the included FPGA engine, you can emulate the sound of vintage microphones and exert control over proximity effect, off-axis response, and polar pattern—during or after recording. You can choose from a collection of classic and expensive microphones and track the results as you monitor live.
