Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO Overview

Pairing a sophisticated optical design with an exceptionally bright maximum aperture, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO from Olympus is a versatile wide-angle, 34mm-equivalent prime for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. The lens's calling card is its fast f/1.2 maximum aperture, which suits working in difficult lighting conditions and avails greater control over depth of field. Also, a complex 15 elements, 11 groups construction combines extra-low dispersion, aspherical, and high refractive index elements to significantly reduce both chromatic and spherical aberrations for notable image clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A nine-blade aperture is featured as well, to achieve a smooth bokeh quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques, and a Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual elements to limit flare and ghosting for improved contrast.

Beyond the imaging assets, the lens' physical design is characterized by a weather-sealed construction to benefit working in harsh climates. It also features a Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system for smooth, quiet, and fast focusing performance that is suitable to both stills and video recording. A manual focus clutch permits quick switching to MF control and a printed depth of field scale is also featured on the lens barrel for pre-focusing and hyper focal focusing techniques.

Standard wide-angle 17mm lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 34mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptionally fast f/1.2 maximum aperture supports working in difficult lighting conditions and affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus techniques.
The intricate optical design employs one Super Extra-Low Dispersion element, three extra-low dispersion elements, one Extra-Low Dispersion Dual-Sided Aspherical element, one Extra-Low Dispersion Aspherical element, one Super High Refractive Index element, and one aspherical element, which all work in concert to control chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity, reduced color fringing, and enhanced sharpness.
A Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual lens elements to noticeably reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color neutrality in strong lighting conditions.
An MSC autofocus system, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance to benefit both still photo shooting and movie recording. Additionally, an MF clutch is used for fast changing to manual focus for more precise control.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Weather-sealed construction guards the lens against dust, moisture, and freezing temperatures for working in harsh environments.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO Reviews

Another winner!

I come from Canon SLRs (A1) then a switch to Nikon FX90 and DX70s. Moved to MFT when I realized I was often leaving my gear behind due to volume/weight. As I get older I simply appreciate my MFT kit that has allowed me to get professional results with much less trouble than my older heavier gear. PROS: This lens is one the sharpest lens I have ever owned on par with Oly's other pro prime 45mm F1.2. High sharpness at F1.2 in the center and at corners is similar to F2.8 lenses. Good contrast and very nice color rendition. Bokeh is super creamy in out of focus areas but focused area is RAZOR sharp. Ability to close-focus is amazing and makes images pop & you can get very distinct and original shots. Balances perfectly on my EM-1 mkiii and EM-5 mkii. Autofocus on oly bodies at least is lightning fast and quiet. Love the manual clutch. CONS: As others have noted it is an expensive lens. While not huge, it is not small and at the bigger end for MFT type lenses. So for street photos there might be more discrete choices if you are willing to trade on low F and resolution. This is a heavy lens (this is physics of the glass needed for F1.2 so did not take off a star) and would go with me for day hikes or city street photo sessions but I would go for my 12-40 F2.8 zoom for travel/longer or more arduous hikes where I am less liklely to really need F1.2.

Noisy, makes EVF blink upon autofocus

The lens made a clicking sound, and the EVF blinked upon pressing the shutter release button partway to autofocus. Other Olympus lenses to not do this. I believe that the noise is actually the iris stopping down. Other Olympus lenses do not make the EVF blink. I exchanged it for another, and the second lens made the same sound and made the EVF blink. I returned the second lens.

Fantastic sharpness

I switched to using an Olympus OM - E1 MkII about 2 years ago from a Canon 5D MkIV and a collection of L series lenses. I was a dedicated Canon user, but due a handful of physical issues I made the choice due to weight and quality - especially LENSES. This lens certainly does not disappoint - besides the obvious advantages of an f1.2 lens in low light, it is EXTREMELY sharp. I’m not easily impressed but this lens would probably impress any serious photographer.

I love this lens with f1.2

I do mostly hobby level landscape photography. The weather sealed lens was handy a couple of times shooting in the rain. My favorite feature, and the reason I bought this lens, is the f1.2. It works great in low light! It is fast enough that I was able to shoot many sunrises and sunsets without a tripod. And when I shoot landscape portraits, I love the bokeh this lens produces.

The last—the best

I have the full complement of Olympus Pro Lenses. Really going over the decision to purchase this 17mm 1.2 (approximately 35mm) was so difficult—if you have the 25mm 1.2–why get the 17mm 1.2? The lens is not inexpensive for the average photo shoot—the 1.8 is about a third the price. However, watching comparisons and reading up on both lenses I’m sure you will want the 1.2. Because I’m a people shooter I look at lenses with how many people can fit with no distortion: 25mm=2/45mm=1 and the best for four = 35mm or this micro 4/3 17mm—great Bokeh and extremely versatile—my now “always on the camera” lens—extremely sharp and wonderful in low light. You will want the 17/1.2 in your bag—also great for street shooting at night.

Arguably my favorite lens

I shoot both Nikon FX DSLR & m43 with great glass on both systems. I use m43 to bring the smallest/best possible camera & lens with me in social situations where one cannot appear to be a pro photographer. Restaurants, nightlife & concerts. The Zuiko Pro 17/1.2 is my #1 lens for this purpose. It on an E-M5 III looks like a serious camera but is inconspicuous enough to not kill the vibe while I'm out living an interesting life and taking photographs along the way. You can shoot wide open at f/1.2 and have thin but usable DOF. Close up food photography I'll stop down anywhere from f/1.6 to f/4 depending on how much DOF I want. Sharpness, color, contrast, smoothness of bokeh, whatever optical criteria is close enough to flawless. Focus is super fast on Olympus phase detect bodies, silent, accurate & the build quality is impeccable. My only knock is the Zuiko Pro lens hoods aren't as nice as the top spec PanaLeicas but such is life. They're fine. I'm not complaining. The results speak for themselves. Just buy it!

Versatile, Fast, Sharp Lens

Super sharp lens that is fast in low light. Colors are beautiful and the bokeh is great. This is my go to primary lens for travel, street, and portrait lens. I was also considering the OM 20mm 1.4 lens and I much prefer the 17 mm focal lens. This lens is still a highly relevant lens that outperforms so many of its peers.

This lens is excellent in low light and would work well for astro shooting, however a wider focal length may be more desirable.

question

Is the manual focus ring on this lens different from other Olympus pro lenses? The one I have is not as smooth as my 45mm f1.2
Asked by: Cole
We are not sure if you mean tactical or function smoothness. All the lenses made by Olympus have very similar grip so they should all feel about the same. If manually focusing the movement of the ring is not smooth, you might consider exchanging your lens if you just purchased it.

question

Does this lens have an aperture ring?
Asked by: Bobby
No. It does have a manual focus pull back clutch that simulates the mechanical focus of older lenses with hard stops at the end of it's focus range, no aperture ring though.

question

Would this lens as well as the other Pro prime lenses be too heavy for the PEN bodies?
Asked by: Jim
I don't find this lens or the Oly 25mm f/1.2 PRO lens to be too large or too heavy for my Pen-F. I also use the 12-100MM f/4 PRO on the Pen-F and think that maybe this lens is about at the limit of size and weight for this body. I do prefer to use the Olympus ECG-4 Grip for the Pen-F, which I do not believe detracts from the compact size or appearance of the camera, but markedly improves handling with these larger PRO lenses.
