ELAC UF5 overview

  • 1Description

Enjoy dynamic sound from your amplifier with the ELAC Uni-Fi UF5 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker. It features a three-way design with a 1" cloth dome tweeter concentrically mounted to a 4" aluminum cone midrange, plus three 5.25" aluminum cone woofers. It accepts 40 to 140W of power from your amplifier and produces a 42 Hz to 25 kHz frequency response. The cabinet is made from MDF, and the speaker as a whole was designed by Andrew Jones.

Concentric Tweeter and Midrange
Positioning the 1" soft-dome tweeter and aluminum 4" midrange cone concentrically helps achieve a uniform directivity pattern for flat frequency response and enhanced imaging for both on- and off-axis listening positions.
Aluminum Woofers
With aluminum, resonances that affect the linearity of paper cones can be placed beyond the driver's operating frequency range. An extended-size magnet with a vented pole piece is designed to increase power handling for accurate reproduction of bass frequencies that are clean and clear.
Three-Way Crossover
The three-way crossover is designed to ensure smooth transition between the drivers.
Braced MDF Cabinet
The internal bracing is designed to add stiffness and strength to the cabinet's MDF outer walls, helping to reduce cabinet vibration that causes unwanted coloration.
Magnetically Attached Grille
When the protective grille is removed, hidden magnets beneath the surface of the cabinet keep the front panel free of attachment holes for a clean appearance.
Outrigger Base Design
The outrigger base design for the UF5 provides a larger, more stable footprint and allows for enhanced coupling of the speaker cabinet to the floor.

    ELAC UF5 reviews

    Uni-Fi UF5 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker (Single) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great speakers, check your system first. I love these speakers. The sound quality, as well as value for the money are outstanding. I am evaluating these mostly on music, rather than home theater listening. I was replacing a set of Klipsh bookshelf speakers because I wanted better continuity between the main speakers and the subwoofer. I also wanted better imaging and decided to go with larger speakers for that reason. The UF5's arrived within the week and I was immediately impressed with their packaging and finish. The textured black finish is not nearly as bad as some reviews describe. The magnetic grills are a real plus as well. If you want to take them off you don't constantly fear you are at risk of snapping a prong and having them hang forever lopsided after that. Listening to the UF5's for the first time was an experience. They did exactly what I wanted, filled in the low end and had fantastic left right imaging. The ability to place instruments front to back also seemed better as well. However - this is where I would tell anyone to take caution. I was powering these with a Yamaha RXV477 (80watt/channel at 6 ohms) amp. With no other speakers on aside from the powered subwoofer, this was not enough power. It was fine for listening to background music or watching a sitcom on TV, but I had to run the Yamaha at 90% to get anywhere near a nice level with music. I should also mention that when I did this, I did not use the impedance switch on the Yamaha to set it for 6 ohms as opposed to 8, so therefore it was not simply a question of de-rating the amplifier. It simply wasn't enough. I then purchased a Marantz home theater receiver rated at 120 watts, two channels driven. This works perfectly with these speakers. I now get exactly the sound I was expecting of them. Bottom line - I would buy these again in a heartbeat. I knew I might have to purchase a new receiver and was ok with that. However I would advise anyone purchasing these that even though ELAC recommends 40-140watts per channel on their website, be aware that these are power hungry speakers and you may need to consider that in the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Changing Sound When I first listened to the Uni Fi UF5 speakers, they changed my life forever. Let me explain. Before hearing these speakers, I used to be a headphone guy and I mistakenly believed that high-end headphones sound better than speakers. I own $2,000 Audeze LCD-3 headphones, $1,400 Sennheiser HD-800 headphones and others. Also, I have an expensive Shitt Lyr 2 tube headphone amp and a Cambridge Audio Dacmagic Plus DAC. Compared to my old cheaper speakers these headphones do sound better. However, there is a drastic night and day difference in quality between those headphones and the Uni Fi UF5 speakers. The speakers have a much bigger, higher, and deeper soundstage than the headphones with much more precise imaging. The bass on the Uni Fi's is insanely good. It obliterates the headphones. In fact, I think the bass coming from the speakers alone sounds way better than the bass from my expensive subwoofer. The Uni Fi's don't need a subwoofer they are so powerful. The highs and midrange make those high-end headphones sound terrible they are so clear and detailed. I'm hearing more detail out of these speakers than I ever heard with even the HD-800s which are known for their microscopic sound. After listening to the Elac Uni Fi UF5 speakers, I wish that I never wasted thousands of dollars on headphones and headphone gear because these speakers are a billion times better than any headphone on the market. I am now a speaker guy because of Andrew Jones' brilliant creation. Compared to other speakers, I listened to a friends's 10,000 dollar Bower and Wilkins speakers and I honestly think that my Uni Fi speakers blow his out of the water. I've listened to other brands in the store like Klipsh and others and they are not even close in sound quality to the Elac Uni Fi towers. I believe that these are the best sounding speakers you can buy anywhere near this price and probably a few thousand more above. They truly are perfect in every way. I have nothing negative to say about them. They make the clearest, punchiest, most lush and detailed sound I've ever heard. The vocals and instruments sound exactly like they are live in your room. And the stereo effect is better than surround sound it's so precise. Sometimes instruments sound like they are coming from the sides where there are no speakers or from way past my front wall the sound is so deep. You even get the sense of the size of instruments in how they sound with these speakers. I'm a hardcore audiophile and I can say this is my endgame. I might never listen to headphones ever again or ever buy another pair of speakers. In my opionion, the Elac Uni Fi UF5 are the best pair of speakers you can buy unless maybe you spend substantially more. Yet as I said, even the 10,000 dollar speakers I listened to didn't sound as good as these.
