Zacuto Z-FIND-EVA Overview

The Zacuto EVA1 Z-Finder is specifically made for use with the Panasonic EVA1 camera. The flip-up Z-Finder loupe securely mounts on your camera's LCD screen and prevents ambient light from interfering with your view of the monitor. It forms a sturdy connection to the LCD, which gives you an additional point of stability when hand-holding the camera. The Z-Finder's design permits quickly flipping the finder up and out of the way, so the LCD can be used as a monitor, without removing the finder from the camera.

The built-in adjustable diopter and included extender frames accommodate operators that need a diopter setting of -4 to 0; however, optional drop-in diopters or -1, +1, +2, +3, and +4 are available from Zacuto to extend the range of correction. Included with the finder are a lens cap, sun mask, protective boot, and dust cover. The included 3" long 15mm rod enables attaching the Z-Finder to the EVA's mount.

Note:
The EVA1 Z-Finder is designed specifically for the Panasonic EVA1 and will not work with any other camera.
The EVA1 Z-Finder mounts on your camera's LCD and can be used as a finder, or it can easily flip up and clear the LCD, so you can operate without having your eye pressed against the Z-Finder.
The loupe has a 1.8x magnification and diopter adjustment. Combined with the included extender frames, it supports operators that use a diopter correction of -4 to 0.
Optional drop-in diopters with corrections of -1, +1, +2, +3, and +4 are available separately from Zacuto.
The sun mask and protective cap should be used when shooting in exteriors to help prevent damage from the sun.

Absolute necessity

I have to echo other comments that the documentation leaves a bit to be desired. Also, glue had dripped down over the magnifying lens on the first one I ordered, distorting the viewfinder, but B&H sent me a replacement that doesnt have that problem. If you want to shoot shoulder mounted or outside on a bright day, this loupe is pretty much a necessity. It has a rugged design, and once you figure out how to put it together, it works great. Between the adjustment wheel and extender rings, I was able to get the focus right for my vision. Perhaps the best thing about using this loupe is that it doesnt require power or take up an SDI or HDMI port like an EVF would.

robust but heavy and no instructions

Good quality, but heavy and no instructions came with it. Had to get info on connecting to camera by calling Zacuto. They were very helpful, but it would be good to have a diagram to show how to attach. Not very intuitive.

Significant design problems

I'll admit I have had a low opinion of Zacuto products for many years, having had several bad experiences with them. But at the moment, this is the only option for a proper eyepiece for the EVA1. Design flaws: 1-Weight. It's heavy enough to tip the camera over onto its left side, even with a beefy Zeiss prime mounted on the body. 2-Diopter. If you're nearsighted (virtually everyone over the age of 40), the diopter doesn't have the range to correct for your vision. You have to clip one or two plastic spacers between the LCD and the eyepiece. If you're significantly nearsighted (I use only a +1.75 strength on reading glasses), you have to install both spacers and crank the diopter all the way, and you'll just barely be able to focus well on the screen. If your eyesight is worse than that, you're out of luck. 3-Design. Overall design is clumsy and kludgy. The clip that holds the LCD into the frame....doesn't. It pops open all the time. The clip that holds the hood/eyepiece against the frame is also a bit too easily unlocked accidentally. It also is located on the hood, rather than on the rear frame, which means you need to use both hands to flip the hood up (unlike the one-handed operation of the FS7 hood). The hood's hinges are also very loose--the hood just flops around like a dead fish once it's open. Fortunately, those hinges can be tightened by the user. 4-Support. Item comes with instructions on how to install the spacers for nearsighted users, but no other instructions. If I had not previously seen the unit assembled and mounted on a camera, I would have been hard-pressed to figure it out. Once you've snapped the hood into the frame, then realized you need the spacers, there are no instructions on how to remove the hood (it's MUCH harder than you'd expect). Also, the instructions for how to remove the spacers are just plain wrong. I spent 20 minutes trying to do it per their instructions before figuring out another way (which is infinitely easier than what they tell you to do). All in all, this is the only current workable (and overpriced) solution due to Panasonic's failure to provide a proper eyepiece. But I can't recommend it except as a stopgap. The moment anybody else makes a similar accessory, I will probably replace this.

Great product Terrible documentation.

This loupe is a great solution for the EVA1’s missing EVF. But there are no included directions and no online directions. Took me a bit to figure out how to install it without causing the LCD panel to sag. But once you get it set up correctly, it works like a charm. If you’re stumped on how to install, google up some images of it installed on the EVA1 and you should be able to figure it out. Does not require additional parts like the Zacuto top plate to work correctly.

I've used the z-loupe on Canon's 5D series of cameras, and this one for the EVA1 is even better. Most importantly, it doesn't require power, which allows for a lighter and less complicated rig. You give some resolution compared with the Gratical Eye, but you gain a lot in portability and efficiency. As far as loupes go, this is the best you can get.
