Really Right Stuff BD850-L ULTRALIGHT L-PLATE overview

  • 1Description

The Ultralight L-Plate for Nikon D850 from Really Right Stuff is a low-profile and lightweight design that is machined from a solid block of aluminum into a fixed L-plate. The plate can be changed from a horizontal to a vertical position, without sacrificing your center of axis, while mounted on a tripod. The Arca-type compatible dovetail plate adds quick release functionality to the camera, and an anti-twist pin prevents the camera from twisting upon the L-plate.

The L-plate maintains complete access to the battery door and does not block the camera's tilting screen, and on the port side of the L-plate, it has been machined to enable access to all the camera's ports. A strap boss has been machined into the side, and the bottom of the plate includes a QD socket for Quick Disconnect strap systems. Additionally, Type II black anodizing has been applied to the CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminum to give the L-plate a durable smooth surface, and the plate has laser-engraved center marks on the back of each axis to align on a tripod head.

Really Right Stuff BD850-L ULTRALIGHT L-PLATE reviews

Ultralight L-Plate for Nikon D850 is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit I love the RRS L-plates and have had them for all of my cameras. I decided against the regular 2-piece plate as I wanted the simple design of the 1-piece plate. This L-plate fits perfectly and there is room between the plate and monitor to get your fingertip in and swivel the monitor up. I like the fact that this L-plate is lightweight. The initial run of ultralight L-plates had the center marking in the wrong place; B&H has the correct ones as mine came from the new run (identified by the B after the model number on the bottom of the plate; I confirmed this with RRS).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent as always, but room for improvement RRS products are incredibly well-designed. This is no exception. That does not mean there's no room for improvement. I would have loved if the design included a slot or clip to store an allen key in the bracket. Yes, this is an ultralight design, but I don't think a recessed area for wrench storage would add a significant weight increase (though I'm not an engineer and could be wrong). One note: if you notice the tab sticking inward on the "vertical" portion of the bracket, this creates a space between the bracket and the camera body. I found this odd at first, as I'm used to an L bracket sitting flush against the camera. It turns out that this spacer makes it easier to open and close the I/O tabs on the camera body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very light, rock solid Went with this vs the modular design for a few reasons (cost, weight, rarely tether my rig). It works extremely well. I was concerned at first that this plate did not curve up slightly on the long edges to grab the based of my D850 (as in older plates), but this really isn't needed. The steel pin in the back corner fits into the camera base and prevents any twisting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice light weight bracket The bracket is really light weight yet sturdy. I was concerned when I found that the bracket could be removed from the head when the head lever was only moved 1/2 way. Contacting RRS I was told this being a light weight bracket it didn't include "stops" but the BD850L did. I assume this will be true for all the light weight brackets for other model cameras. This is a problem for me since i hike a lot and do not always remove the camera from the tripod. I resolved this issue buy getting 2 allen head set screws drilling and tapping a hole on each end of the bracket and installing the set screws. Now the head lever has to be moved to the fully open position to remove the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from flawless fit and jewel-like execution Got the Ultralight after returning the RRS 2-part L-plate for the D850. The latter, though gorgeous, was heavier and the assembly was too complex for my needs. The Ultralight also has a socket on the bottom into which you can insert the pin of a sling that facilitates easy and secure carrying of camera/lens assembly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must for my D850 I have RRS L-Plates for my older Nikon DSLRs. They are a necessity for my RRS ballheads. After I got my D850, the RRS website said it didn't have any. Fortunately, B&H did. I like this better than the ones I have for my D7200s, as it is one piece. It sticks out from the side of the D850. At first I thought that was weird and maybe a problem, but then I realized that allowed me to open the covers on that side of the camera to get access to the ports or whatever on that side without removing the plate. It is a breeze to switch from landscape to portrait mode with the L-Plate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superlight I use this on my Nikon D850, super light for travelling. I like the option of being able to attach a wrist strap. I have not found anything that I do not like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from usual great fit Have had RRS L brackets for multiple Nikon bodies, all with great fit. The mount seems to change with each recent release, but this current rendition with recessed mount screw is very nice. Now if only Nikon would stop making subtle changes with each body that do not allow reuse of plates!
