Sony 24-105mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for versatility, the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens from Sony is a wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom designed for E-mount mirrorless cameras. Complementing the useful range of focal lengths is a constant f/4 maximum aperture, which maintains consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also affords increased control over depth of field. Benefitting the reach is an advanced optical design, which employs aspherical and extra-low dispersion glass elements to control color fringing, distortion, and a variety of aberrations for greater sharpness and clarity. A Nano AR Coating has also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for high contrast and color accuracy when working in harsh light.

Further adding to the versatility, this 24-105mm f/4 also incorporates an Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting, and this system can pair with select cameras' sensor-shift image stabilization for even more effective blur control. Suiting both stills and video shooting, a Direct Drive Super Sonic wave AF motor, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick and quiet focusing performance as well as natural manual focus control. Additionally, this also features a weather-resistant physical construction, along with a fluorine-coated front element, to enable its use in trying weather conditions.

Covering a versatile wide-angle to short-telephoto range, this 24-105mm lens is designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 36-157.5mm equivalent focal length range.
A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Four aspherical elements are featured in the optical design and two of which are designated as Advanced Aspherical elements to noticeably reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness and clarity.
Three extra-low dispersion elements are also used to minimize color fringing and chromatic aberrations for greater color accuracy.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
A Direct Drive Super Sonic wave AF motor and internal focus mechanism provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contribute to more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
A focus hold button and AF/MF switch are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
A dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 24-105mm f/4.0 reviews

    FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost great I've been anticipating a lens in this range since I got my A7R2! It is smaller and lighter than the Canon 24-105L lens I used to use when I shot with Canon gear and easily as sharp. Unfortunately, at 24mm the vignetting at all 4 corners is extreme, hence 4 stars instead of 5. This phenomenon goes away around 26mm and lessens when you stop down, say from f4 to f16, but it is disappointing. B and H says it will do an exchange with me when more lenses are available, but another user on a Sony blog has found the same issue, so I'm guessing it is a design flaw. Bottom line, even if this is not a correctable flaw, I will still likely keep the lens, because it is quite good in every other respect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Results Than Expected I was looking for a versatile lens for video and saw that this lens had just been released not too long ago. Of course, when camera gear is new its always smart to wait on it and check out as many reviews as possible over time before buying. Well, I didn't do that and I don't regret it whatsoever. It is remarkably sharp, it has BEAUTIFUL bokeh, and to me it looks like a G Master lens (for half the price). My only complaint would be that it's f/4. Although, that is FAR from a deal breaker. Whether you're buying for photo or video, at this price point you really can not go wrong with this guy. 24-105 is an incredibly versatile focal length and I can't recommend this lens enough, especially if you're in the market for video. Super sharp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally ! Between the overpriced Zeiss 24-70 with mediocre performance ( my older Canon version was much better and $300 cheaper ) and the nice but expensive and heavy 24-70 GM I was thinking I'd just have to wait for Sigma to come out with a lease like this. But Sony surprised us. This lens performs surprisingly well for a zoom, is solid, reasonable size and weight, and does what I need it to do. I have no vignetting problems at any aperture or focal length . The user(s) who have this problem have a bad copy and should return them for a new copy. ( I've gotten bad copies of lenses in the past from several manufacturers, it happens ) Zoom ring was little stiff at first, good now, doesn't creep at all. This lens will see plenty of use for sure.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beware of potential focus issues Test your copy thoroughly during the return window, the second production batch (serial numbers starting with 181) seems to be frequently affected by a focus shift issue - details at the Fred Miranda blog forum, or do a search for "sony 24-105 focus shift issues" Curiously, currently there are no reports of issues for lenses from the presumed first run, with serial numbers starting with 180.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SHARP walkaround lens, ZERO regrets WOW is all I can say. Yes, it is worth the money if you've got a high-res sensor. The 24-70 F4 on a 42MP sensor was a huge disappointment. The old optics just didn't cut it on my A7RIII. The 24-105 F4, however, is on another level completely and honestly it rivals some of my primes in sharpness. Maybe I just have a stellar copy. Bottom line, this lens is nearly always on my camera and if you're OK with F4, you will not regret investing in this sweet glass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatility / Quality / Size I bought this lens as I left for a 4 day commercial shoot after only testing it for a day - I was confident in my primes Incase this zoom started to let me down but I shot 90% on this lens. The G-master might be sharper, maybe, but for me the combo of size, balance with the A7r iii w/ grip and the little bit of extra reach at 105mm makes it an easy choice for me. It didn’t nail focus every single time, but we were shooting hectic fast moving subjects in low light & some times you have to just let a few go. It hit 95% I’d say & I was blasting bursts so it all worked out. I shot in a downpour for a couple hours with no covering & this little beauty held up great. All in all, really glad I jumped on this - a great, versatile lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Seriously Fun and Versatile Lens! This lens covers the perfect normal-to-slightly-telephoto zoom range that I use most, AND it has the highest magnification ratio (1:3) and close focus capability of any non-macro lens in this range. That's the fun part, since I can move in close when I'm in tight quarters with a subject and not lose focus. It is significantly sharper than the Sony 24-70mm f/4. The slightly heavier, larger 24-105mm is worth it for the increased quality and capability. This lens has become my new favorite! (Previous favorite was the Sony 90mm f/2.8 macro, which is also a superb lens!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most useful lens in my bag! This lens is so useful, it's always in my bag attached the the camera. In terms of sharpness, at 42 megapixels it can't compete with the primes. But it's good enough at all apertures and focal lengths that unless you're pixel peeping, the photos are plenty sharp. I take a specialty lens for the subject I plan to shoot, like the 12-24mm. Then I throw this one in the bag in case I need other focal lengths. Over and over again I've ended up shooting with it, and liked the results.
